Grays S.B.S Mauritius 2009
"Spicy, sweet and full-bodied with notes of oak" is how one taster put it, and that nails this Mauritius column-still rum. Expect dark cherry, blackcurrant, raisin and a real wood backbone, with a light minty lift in the finish. The 53.7% is woven in so well most people barely feel it. Several call out the very dark color for a 2009. A balanced, fruity-woody sipper.
- Rich red fruit
- Well-hidden alcohol
- Oily, creamy body

How does Grays S.B.S Mauritius 2009 taste?
Aggregated from 59 community reviews.
Dark, fruity-woody cherry sipper at cask strength Genuinely well-liked: rich red fruit, cherry, licorice and oak with the cask strength tucked away. A couple of drinkers found the licorice or wood a touch dominant and wanted more freshness.

Another rum from my new favorite distillery Grays. And this rum does not disappoint at all, the opposite is the case: he inspires (me)! Just look at the color of the rum in the bottle! 😍 Wonderfully dark, hard to believe in a rum from the year 2009. (Was there but helped?) Anyway, a very, very pleasant-balanced rum, deep, spicy, fruity, the for me identity-creating currant note may not be missing. Round thing, alcohol well integrated, acceptable PLV - recommendation especially for all who like to walk off the beaten path.

This brought me back to a place in Slovakia I used to live. Especially to berries I used to pick :) Currants, wild strawberries. If you told me this is the one and only drink I had to drink throughout my life, I would be pleased. Drunk but pleased.

very interesting rum, the profile on the nose could be Jamaika, lots of fruits and a hint of polish, but with the cherry notes completely different and subtle. Regrettably it losses a bit on the palate and provides a long finish of wood and cherry. Nice

Rum má vyváženou chuť, alkohol velmi dobře zaintegrovaný do chuti a delší závěr.

Příjemné a harmonické pití. Ve vůni hromada červeného ovoce, vanilka, dřevo, z chuti vystupuje máta, rozinky, třešně.

In my mouth I have the association of a cherry lollipop from my childhood. Very pleasant to drink. Alcohol hardly noticeable or not noticeable at all. Just find it super pleasant. Various rums from Mauritius were tested, which were split into a larger set. Thank you very much for this amazing split Gunnar.

New Grove. I love New Grove. Let's see what the Moscatel cask finish did. In the nose it's heavy on red fruits. Fortified wine/port. Cherry coke. But also the typical NG freshness; menthol and eucalyptus. Some French oak-armagnac flavours. Good! Lets dive in. More licorice/bay leaf in taste. Still fruity but different. More spices. Madeira wine. Bitter and woody/oaky in the aftertaste. Interesting. It might be a bit unbalanced but the fresh nature of the NG spirit keeps it up. I'm a NG fan so they can't really do much wrong. You have to like wood/tannins a lot for this one.

An impressive one, very complex and fruity with lots of different types of wood used for aging. It has a classic Grays flavour profile with intensive dark fruits, wood and even some slightly minty notes in the finish. The only problem is that there were only 305 bottles made. 🙈

Mjam!

#4020 This was a nice surprise. A very dark rum with nice fruits and wood. I like the light minty note in the profile and the empty glass reveals sweet notes of the moscatel cask.
Review by Andi
Very dark, spicy, woody-dry with a minty note on the finish. The alcohol is well integrated.

Wau. Velke prekvapeni. V chuti moc prijemne drevo a opet sherry. Moc dobry rum!

Similarity to the two CdI on the nose, some wood stain and sweetness. Then wood, sweetness and cherry on the palate, some freshness. The freshness is less pronounced than in the two CdI, but more cherry and sweetness. Not particularly complex for my taste. For the money, I would rather go for the two CdI.

This Grays is not my cup of tea, the nose is quite restrained and on the palate a strong bitter licorice hit is too dominant for me.
