Velier Appleton Hearts Collection - 1993
Plenty of tasters mistake this for a Guyana rum in blind glasses — 29 tropical years put heavy oak, black tea, menthol and glue up front, not fruit. This is a wood-driven Appleton pot still at 63%, with leather, roasted nuts and dark chocolate underneath. Give it real time in the glass and cherry, orange and berries surface. Long, dry, slightly bitter finish.

Old, wood-driven Jamaican with mint and tannin Loved by seasoned drinkers as a complex, wood-heavy old Jamaican with mint and black tea. The catch several name: the tannic bitterness and oak can tip toward too much.

A nose that blends wood and glue. You can tell you're in Jamaica, but the profile is old-fashioned and not exuberant. On the palate, it's eose all over the place. Wood, menthol, bitter orange, licorice, leather, cigar leaf. Incredibly rich and complex. Superb length, with notes of mentholated tobacco. Exceptional.
Review by Oliver
Reminds me of a T.D.L with a bit of REV through the mint/black tea note. Plus a great and heavy cask influence from the tropical aging. After a while, grapefruit, herbs, and a bit of glue come through. The alcohol is very well integrated. An almost endless finish. There's a lot to discover here. Great! My number 2 from the Hearts Collection!
Review by SaibotZtar
Wow, I should have definitely grabbed a bottle... Wonderfully fruity and fresh 😯😯 I didn't expect that. You can recognize parallels to Guyana REV with the balanced heaviness, fruit, herbs, and wood. ... also mint and even a bit of funk can be smelled and tasted, great!! Nice surprise!
Review by Jakob
Quite exciting. A rum that already has a lot of barrel influence and therefore recognizable signs of age - but has not yet fully matured beyond its zenith and is drowning in bitterness and an exuberant wood influence. On the nose, heavy notes of glue, wood, tea and dark and sweet fruit. There is plenty of mint on the palate, as well as tart hints of leather and spices. The finish is spicy, which makes me think of ginger. That's something, even if I would have liked to have tasted the distillate with 2-3 years less tropical maturation.

Edit: It would be a dream to be able to try the whole Appleton Hearts range. My conclusion would be that this is a really high-quality range. All in all, they are all great bottlings. I personally find it difficult to choose a true winner here. Only the 84 falls a little short. Both it and the 02 can't quite keep up, although that's complaining at a high level. However, if I had to choose one, it would probably be the 03 because it was the first one I tasted from the series. Another wonderful Appleton Hearts bottling. As already mentioned, the minty notes on the palate are reminiscent of T.D.L and REV. I had feared that the long tropical maturation, the cask/wood and especially the bitter note would ruin the drop. But this is not the case. A direct comparison of the complete series is still pending. In any case, very successful.

Tasted against the 2002 Appleton Hearts (RX15475). And while I already found that one dreamy at the first tasting, I have to say that I like this one just a tad better. It's a bit less alcoholic and on the nose and palate it's earthier and spicier, more like KFM style (which I obviously really like). 😉
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Could almost pass as Enmore in a blind tasting. Really awesome!! What I find especially exciting is the note that strongly reminds me of Enmore REV, with black tea, blackberries, lavender, and mint, plus a bit of licorice. You do have to like the bitterness though... Overall, the second best in the series but it doesn't quite reach the 1998.
Review by Leo Krüper
Noticeably old, long-aged Appleton. Very characterful due to the cask influence. Not a smooth, easy sipper, but a masculine, robust rum with edges and corners. I like it, but it’s not a world-class rum, which you might expect given the basic info.
Review by Serge
Update: in direct comparison with the 94 Platzhirsch, it really did extremely well. The 94 is somewhat fruitier and sweeter in my opinion and the 93 has the nicer tannin, wood and mint mixture. Very nice bottling - I'll have to try it again against the 1994 to see which one suits me better, but it's already very good. With the 1994 definitely my favorite of this delicious series. More on the woody-bitter side ... but I don't mind. The nose opens up wonderfully fruity after a while and everything seems a bit like REV and TDL as mentioned before ... but also somehow like the old EMBs. Exactly mine.
Review by Dr.Django
In a direct (unfair) comparison with the 2002 Appleton, this one is much better! Dark fruits, herbs, mint and intense black and fresh peach iced tea. The finish is long, here the black and peach iced tea comes through even more with a pleasant woodiness. This rum is fun.
Review by TheJackDrop
Tasted and enjoyed at the 1802 bar in Paris with good advice! Then in 2024 a nice sample! Nose: very fresh. fine wood, red fruits, menthol, light camphor, a few notes of dark chocolate; milk chocolate... Grapefruit, glue, dried herbs, tea... It's crazy, heady, like a perfume. Mouth: explosive, peppery, spicy. Then fruit returns under a very strong menthol. Finally, chocolate that coats the tongue. Almost unprecedented intensity. Alcohol very slightly present. Finish: big menthol, outrageous woodiness, big tannins, and dark chocolate again!

Appleton Hearts Crosstasting with the vintages 2002, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1999 (RX15475, RX15474, TBD) 2002: Fruity and spicy with a hint of menthol. Lots of wood and spices on the palate, slightly astringent and bitter, very subtle fruity notes. 1993: Significantly more intense with more spices and more from the cask, plus dirty notes that remind me of TDL or Chairmans. Extremely dry and bitter on the palate with a good barrel impact, slightly charred. I miss something fruity here. The finish is very long! 1994: Similar to 1993, but more fruit and a clear minty note. Clear parallels on the palate too, but not quite as bitter and dirty and fruit notes are still discreetly present. 1999: Lots of wood and spices, with dried fruit and tropical fruit in the background. Fruits in the background. Lots of spices and wood on the palate, but hardly any fruit notes, but no charred/bitter notes either. 1995: Again, dirty aromas with tar, leather and varnish. Similar to 1993/1994, the woody, bitter aromas also dominate the palate here. For me: 1994 ->8.8 2002 + 1999 ->8.7 1993 + 1995 ->8.6

Today the 1993 in direct comparison with the 2002. This Hearts-typical note, which somehow smells like polish or floor polish, I have with both in the nose, with the 02er a bit more pronounced. The 93 goes a bit more in the direction of freshness, herbs and tobacco, the 02 more in the direction of orange liqueur marzipan cake and brioche. On the palate, both with dried fruit, the longer aging is clearly evident in the 93, expressed in a slight (but not unpleasant) bitterness, tannins and black tea. The 02 has even more sweetness and goes more in the direction of allspice and latte. Both again top notch bottlings, but the 93 is already a bit more complex.

#4023 Had a little time to line up the three new Heart Collection releases before going to a tasting event at Romdeluxe later today. This particular rum is really nice and it's well balanced and fruity with roasted wood notes. Pretty close to saying this is an elegant release and the price is pretty OK at time of release. The empty glass reveals nice coffee and nutty notes and it draws really nice curtains in the glass.
Review by Felix Reiber
The nose is surprisingly spicy and intense. The 63% alcohol is so well integrated that besides a hint of glue, there’s no sharpness in the nose. The same holds true on the palate. Butter-soft yet spicy/intense, the 29-year-old spreads out in the mouth. It reminds me strongly of an older Armagnac. Great notes of wood, leather, mint, and other herbs come through alongside black tea, caramel, and licorice. There’s no trace of the 63% ABV and it’s extremely complex. The long finish is wonderfully spicy with herbs, roasted aromas, and pineapple. Just like on the palate, all the aromas are accompanied by black tea, caramel, and vanilla. A very well-aged and varied product.
Review by LukaŽiga
8,7:On the nose, the first impression we get is fruity with a banana, an apple, medicinal with esters and glue and woody, with roasted, toasted notes like nuts, leather, spicy with cinnamon, nutmeg and some sap. On aeration, flowery tones like lavender arise, herbaceous and a bit dark with black tea, licorice, fruity with citrus and pineapple, as the apple is baked. Certainly we also notice vanilla, chocolate and pastry. 8,6:On the palate, the attack is great for a moment, minty and with vanilla, a little confusing after with strong spice, bitterness, luckily balanced with roasted wood notes like dark chocolate, caramel and esters, overripe tropical fruits like mango, banana, citrus with an orange. With resting, a bit darker molasses arises with black tea, cigar tobacco and coffee, leather from roasted...with a floral touch. 8,9:The finish is really delicious, long, complex, dry with lot of fruits like banana, coconut, pineapple, citrus, red fruits like raspberry, different berries, yellow and dried fruits, prunes especially, as the wood is spicy and roasted with roasted nuts, pastry, vanilla...
Review by Thunderbird
On the nose I find it still quite restrained, with time it develops finely perceptible separable aromas. The palate is there much more present, beautiful herbal aromas paired with wood and spice and burnt sugar! The alcohol is nicely integrated! This chain of flavors continues on the finish, with a hint of bitter orange joining in later. A very good bottling
Review by cigares
A full, rich nose with overripe tropical fruit, yellow fruit (apple), cedar wood, tobacco, wood glue and leather. The palate is vigorous and full-bodied, with almost all the aromas immediately present and the wood supporting them. Excellent balance. The finish is shorter than expected, although aromas of cedar wood, menthol and apple linger. The empty glass reveals more menthol and a herbaceous side that wasn't very prominent before.
Review by Giorgio Garotti
Great balance in this Appleton!Despite the 29 years of aging the barrel integrates nicely and there is a swing of flavors between bitter, sweet and medicinal herbs! In the finish I am very intrigued by the hint of blackberries and raspberries that make you end the drink on a high note!Definitely worth trying again!
Review by Michael Schillheim
Little fruit on the nose, but more herbs, glue, spices, a little lavender and wood. Wood was also what I expected from the key data and I was not disappointed. But in a very pleasant way. On the palate, the Hearts reminds me slightly of a T.D.L. due to the mint. Some tea, liquorice, coffee, spices and that pleasant woody note again. The familiar aromas dominate the long finish, along with a little red berries. This is the first Hearts for me and I am surprised at how well the alcohol is integrated and how round this rum is. I like it very much.
Review by Timo Groeger
Yeah now it kicks off, I'm not totally convinced because I find the alcohol a bit too aggressive. But otherwise a tasty rum offering chocolate, vanilla, caramel, and some wood.
Review by Johannes
Very special and intense rum. Due to tropical aging, a lot of wood, glue and menthol comes through, little fruit, no esters. Finish somewhat bitter, astringent, but very long. Not an easy sipper...
Review by Joachim Guger
Appleton Hearts 2003 - 2002 - 1993 Nose: All three very, very similar. Same marque? Banana bread, dried apples, licorice, caramel, fine spice, glue and glue. Powerful and warm. Compared to the 2003, the 2002 is a bit drier, dustier, a bit more licorice and less fruit . The 1993 is a bit woodier and more complex. All three great. Mouth: 2003 and 2002 again very similar. The 2002 a bit woodier and spicier. The 1993 then again... perhaps a touch too much. Conclusion: all three shine with a beautiful flavor profile. All three highest craftsmanship in terms of quality, integration of alcohol and wood maturity. The latter also applies to the 1993, 29 years of tropical storage and - matter of taste - just fine. Which one do I like best? Difficult decision, probably the 2002. What do I miss? The variety. How many marques can Appleton muster? Is that all after 7 bottlings?
Review by ilRummista
Stratospheric rum! I recommend oxygenating it about 20/25 minutes before drinking. One of the best releases of 2023. A product with enormous character! Exceptional on both nose and palate. Complex but balanced. Let it open a bit in the glass and it will surprise you!
Review by Marcel.
Very intriguing on the nose, extremly pleasant. The palate is a little to much wood and spices for me Iam getting a burst of spices like cloves and cardamom around midd palate, wich puts me of a little. It’s a fantastic bottle, probably pairs well with a cigar.
Review by Julien Ries
On the nose, it's very herbal and medicinal (camphor). Quite atypical, it brings very mineral notes of rubbed flint, pencil lead. The leather is also very present, with a hint of licorice. The whole thing is very refined with a lot of woodiness. The attack is a monument of integration. Impossible to guess that it's 63% alcohol. The palate is nevertheless explosive with quite complex and chemical aromas: menthol, camphor, tar, phenol, tobacco. It gives off a pronounced bitterness sensation but it blends very well with the profile. Said like that, it doesn't sound very inviting, but it's really disarmingly original and balanced. We actually look for comparisons with known things (heavy TDL) but it's really a rum apart. Nice discovery on my novice path in the very vast world of rum. The finish is long and complex. It's hard to put into words this really unique rum.
Review by Djehey
Ah! An Appleton heart, I love it by default. Lots of anticipation with the desire to buy a bottle... Comparison with a Clarendon 1995 from Distilia. The Appleton is really very on the gourmand and comforting woody side. It’s not very complex. Barrel aroma mainly with a slight fruit. The Clarendon is more complex but less pleasant. What I miss is a slight ester (which seems to have been replaced by menthol) and a bit more complexity.
Review by Nils123
The alcohol is super well integrated. For the age, it is very barrel-forward, but still very fruity. With longer standing time, it becomes even more minty and fruity. Very complex! With water, I then have a wonderfully long finish of mint and mango.
Review by Volkmar Weber
Jamaican who was issued a fake plane ticket to Guyana. Wonderful roasted notes, heavy oak - dry and somewhat bitter at the end. In blind tastings, always a guarantee that more than half are completely wrong.
Review by Christoph H.
On the nose a really nice tropical matured rum at an advanced age. You don't often find such blatant tropical maturations and the risk that such rums are already a little over the top is very high, if you take the Appleton 84, for example. And yes, it is extremely mature, but for me it is by no means over the top. The nose is pleasantly warm. First comes some glue, followed by blood orange, grapefruit, orange peel and tropical fruit. However, spicy aromas such as aniseed, pepper, ginger, herbs and fresh mint are somewhat stronger. The barrel influence is enormous, both on the nose and in the mouth. It becomes noticeably tannic, especially in the mouth, but to my surprise only slightly bitter. For me, it's a harmonious thing overall, I really like it. I'm definitely going to get a whole bottle of this
Review by Florent Apl
That's an incredibly complex and delicious rum! It's an amazing bottle and I'm happy I got to try a sample. It delivers aromas of glue tamed by burnt caramel and wood, as well as empyreumatic notes and tropical fruits.
Review by Jarek
Ohh... delicious! At the level of the 1994 Hearts. Similar in some parts, but not the same. Mint is also present here, but less. More fruit and glue on the nose. I can't decide between the two, but luckily I don't have to 😉. Addendum Franconian Rum Tasting Gang & Jakob, 2023-07-27 part 1: All Appleton Hearts at the start this time (1984, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1999, 2002 and 2003). For me, the 1994 is still the best of the bunch, closely followed by the 1993 and 1998. The 2002 was also surprisingly tasty. The 1984 is right at the top on the nose, but falls short on the palate due to the excessive wood influence.
Review by lars
After walking through vineyards all day and luckily mostly avoiding drinking, now a really fine drop. Almost perfect for me. Minty like a good TDL, but also somehow fruity, roasted, and everything you like. Just a little less barrel wouldn't have hurt. Slightly too bitter because of that.
Review by Romain de L
Dégustation Singapore Toulouse with Benbrt ! Very nice Nose is super intense - cherry / leather / strangely some apple - hints of pineapple First sip is a kick ! Quite strong but very smooth - tarte tatin feeling, leather, hints of yellow fruits Very long finish - leathery / earthy
Review by Piotr Ignasiak
Starts off with a soft nose similar to 2002, with this cherry and vanilla notes. But after a while and on palate it's much more intense with herbs, mint, coffee. Quite enjoyable with a long finish with a bit of a raspberry. Thanks Tobias for sharing the sample.

Appleton evening sponsored by FTG. My favorite among the three Appletons tonight. The ABV is more realizable but so are the fruits, herbs and caramel.
Review by Tim
Intense bombshell with endless complexity. Fruits, spices, wood, floral, roasted aromas, brown sugar, dark chocolate. In the mouth a completely new side with mint, tea and tobacco at the forefront, all very intense. And then in the finish surprisingly more berries, which for me personally crowns this rum. The only criticism that could be made is the stronger bitterness in the mouth.
Review by Fuwi
The long time in the barrel is clearly noticeable. On the nose, it is tart and bitter, like an Earl Grey that has been steeped for too long. Between the woody aromas, however, there are then some fruity aromas, slight ester components and some spiciness reminiscent of phenolic aromas. A heavy, complex rum that requires a lot of time and concentration
Review by rbfsnow
My favorit Appleton from the Hearts Serie 😍 Extreme complex rum with nose & taste : Appleton & Clarendon EMB + Guyana Rev & Enmore + StLucia Chairmans John Dore 1
Review by Skyfly
Jamaica without Hampden tasting: really delicious and extremely complex drop. From nose to finish, the additional influences of black tea, tobacco, mint, leather, and dark chocolate are a real dream.
Review by Righrum
A rum that gives its best after a couple of hours in the glass
Review by Martin Spooner
Even less nose compared to the 18-year-old and 20-year-old. It decreases a lot with age. Maybe this time really minimal glue notes. The taste, however, wonderfully round and creamy. Definitely number 1 in the mini hearts tasting. Really a great rum. Still an absolute burner in the after-tasting!!!
Review by Mirco
In the nose dark orange peel, ripe banana, herbs and a warm wood note, plus a hint of menthol. On the palate dense and concentrated with dried fruit, spices, cocoa and dry wood. Complex and very balanced, without being overloaded. A multi-layered Jamaican with a long, spicy aftertaste and great quality.
Review by alex
Very surprising, I'm getting leather and tobacco, with the menthol note coming right behind. Very pleasant, a superb "nose" and great length on the palate. I like it a lot 😍 I'd say it's the best of the series.
Review by Gregor
Nose: berry mixture, plum, glue, citrus fruits, lots of wood, I like it Palate: Like nose, the wood coming through present otherwise well balanced, creamy, alcohol well integrated, slightly bitter finish
Review by BnBrt
I had smelled it and it made me really want it. The nose still enchanted me and the tasting lives up to it. One of my top 3. Enchanting nose, fruit (cherry, pineapple, and tarte tatin) mixed with leather. Exceptional attack on the palate, very lively. First the fruits (notably the caramelized apple from the tarte tatin) followed by vanilla and the barrel before finishing on leather. Exceptional length.

Demerara lovers be damned, this is a stellar rum from Appleton Estate and Velier. Heavy notes of fragrant vanilla, oak polish, acetone (in a good way), cut sheet metal, engine grease, roasted chestnuts or hazelnuts, mango chutney, and stewed orange peels. Sweet, spicy, and aromatic. Not as good as the 1994 or 2003, but definitely a very close second. Great stuff!

Jamaican bomb. The 29 years luckily haven't covered up the distillery character. Give it plenty of time, a lot more will come out! Viscous, oily, endlessly long finish. Pretty awesome stuff!!
