Dugas T.D.L La Maison du Rhum #5 2009

People who already like Trinidad column rum will feel at home here: this 2009 TDL from Dugas hits the usual markers — tropical fruit, oak, vanilla, a little smoke and a medicinal, glue-ish edge. The menthol everyone mentions is faint, showing up late in the finish. At 53% the alcohol is mostly well-integrated, though a couple of tasters notice some dilution. Called a "daily sipper" more than a deep one.

Fruity, woody Trinidad sipper, mint barely there Well-liked as a classic TDL: fruity, woody, faintly minty and smoky, with good body. Most agree it's easygoing rather than complex, and the mint is subtler than expected.

An unsurprising TDL featuring the usual hallmarks of this distillery: tropical fruits, wood, spices and menthol, which remains rather discreet here. On the palate, the alcohol is not perfectly integrated, but remains pleasant.

Surprisingly good TDL from Mezan, with an unusual amount of banana flavor.

A great success at a great price! It has a TDL profile, but with a touch of ester and smoke, giving it great depth. Menthol appears more in the middle and end of the palate, but is not predominant. Medium to short length.

Very representative of tdl, I think. On the nose, fairly intense tropical fruit and smoke (after aeration). The palate is faithful to the nose. However, you can feel the dilution. It's not complex, but given its price, we're not going to compare it to top-of-the-range tdl. Nevertheless, it's great value for money, really.

Pleasant rum from Trinidad. Little smoky/roasted, more fruity afterwards. Mint is also slightly recognizable, but rather in the finish. Overall a really nice rum, especially when you consider its price.

Angostura is famous for a bottle most people never drink neat. The bitters house founded in 1824 became Trinidad's only rum distillery, and its arm Trinidad Distillers makes a clean, column-distilled, Spanish-style rum unlike the heavy funk of Jamaica or Guyana. The same plant still guards the secret recipe for the world's most famous cocktail bitters.
