Well-liked but a divider, even among Caroni fans. Classic heavy Trinidad profile: rubber and tar up front, caramel and vanilla underneath, with a bitterness on the finish that a few members flag as too much. At 62% it needs a splash of water to open up. One taster ranks it in the lower-middle of Velier's Caronis — good, not the best.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Classic HTR profile, with sweet vanilla, caramel and dried fruit notes on the nose. On the palate, the sweetness is once again quite present, with typical Caroni HTR flavors and a fairly present bitterness on the finish. The alcohol is also not fully integrated. A great rum, but still only in the lower mid-range of the Velier Caronis.

Today we did a widespread tasting with very different rums. Phew, this one kicks a lot of different places. Had to add a little water after which it releases more flavours.

No closed distillery is chased harder than Caroni. The Trinidad distillery shut down around 2002 and not a drop has been made since, but its heavy, oily, almost diesel-like rum became a collector obsession, carried to the world by Velier. Every bottle now comes from a finite, shrinking stock, which is exactly why the prices keep climbing.
