Saint James Les Éphémères - N°6 2006

"So fruity and fun," one member sums it up, and that's the pull here: roasted pineapple, candied orange peel and banana up front, then Saint James wood, cocoa and spice taking over. The 16-year cask strength shows as pepper and drying tannin. Give it air. A few tasters find it bitter and one-note next to No. 1 of the series, but the orange-forward nose wins a lot of people over.

Hmm, heretical question: could it possibly be that this rhum is generally overrated in the euphoric exuberance in the face of a four-piece set perfectly prepared for collectors? 🤔 Too much advance praise? I certainly had to drink it in first. 😳 After the typical notes of whitewashed wall dominate the nose, the rhum on the palate lacks almost everything that fascinated me about the first release in the series. Only towards the end, on the finish, is there a certain spicy power that compensates somewhat for the seemingly arbitrary impression on the palate. Nevertheless, no comparison with the divine No. 1, rather with the already weakening No. 7 (even if a direct crosstasting is still pending). I wouldn't have thought so. Bad form on the day? Update 2023-04-14: No, it's not due to poor form on the day. 🤷‍♂️ Tasted today directly against the already legendary Les Epheméres No. 1. The No. 6 can make up a little ground (80 instead of 78 points), but can't hold a candle to the No. 1, remains somehow one-dimensional. Update 2024-02-11: Tasted again in parallel with the Saint James/Excellence Rhum (RX18129) from the same distillation year. Result as expected: Les Ephemeres No. 6 is in no way a match for the Excellence Rhum. Strangely enough, it has an unpleasant smell of inferior glue on the nose today, at least initially, and an inappropriate sharpness on the palate; the agricole seems unround overall - all in direct comparison to RX18129, mind you. Tasted individually, it would certainly score better. It remains at 80 points.

Great nose! On the palate, however, it's a bit too bitter and sharp-edged, plus this very intense nutmeg note, overall quite furry and sour. Unfortunately not really my thing compared to the other Ephemere releases.

#4153 This release is also doing pretty well once rested for a while. Roasted wood with nice fruits and spices. Good balance between the elements, also the ABV is well integrated. Draws really nice curtains in the glass and the empty glass has some chocolate and light grass. Price to quality is very good in my mind.

The third in the bunch...and I like it quite well, it can be enjoyed with a certain ease . On the nose quite unobtrusive with a pleasant fruity note, on the palate an interplay of fruit, wood and spice , the latter also dominates the finish. However, it needs time in the glass

Tasted quickly on the Rhumfest so to try again. Between the 1 and the 7 for me. So very nice Agricole very well made. But personally, for the same amount or close to it, I prefer to buy something else (neisson XO or single cask HSE). I'm not a collector that must be why 😉

8,6:On the nose, fresh sugarcane, earthy, mineral, waxy, sandal wood with black pepper, some tropical fruits and orange peel, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the cane is flowery, caramelized notes, vanilla and chocolate arise. 8,8:On the palate, the attack is delicious with flowery and mineral sugarcane, strong barrel impact with nuts, cocoa, leather, spicy vanilla, the oak is pretty obvious, as there are variety of different fruit aspect with raisins, tropical fruits and orange peel. 8,8:The finish is long, dry and tannic, delicious, balanced, with grassy cane, a lot of spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, pepper and caramelized, roasted nuts, as the fruits are dried and citrus..

I found it much better than the 7 I tested. Frankly woody, but not overpowering. More gourmand, and surely more accessible too. A powerful finish with a bitterness counterbalanced by a pleasant sweetness. Edit: it's still VERY woody. But the spices save the day. Strange series.

That's how subjective taste sensations can be... for me, the "Wow!" came as soon as I opened the bottle. Fruity, spicy, woody, still unmistakably an agricole. But also almost a little funky. By no means worse than the other brothers in the range. But we won't be tasting them together until No. 5 is on the table. Addendum: Finally tasted all four Ephemeres together today. All four are very good and I can hardly pick a favorite. I like No. 6 very much on the nose, with its clear orange notes. On the palate, it would be No. 1.

Compared to the first two Les Ephémeres releases, the most fruity, apart from that located between the 2001 and 2007 - the spicy notes are reminiscent of the 2001, but do not present themselves with quite the same intensity. The quite elegant sweet wood notes are again reminiscent of the 2007 vintage release. Again, a very coherent complement to the first two releases, which further reinforces my enthusiasm about the selection in the Les Ephémeres series. Once again, a very successful release.

Expectations are high when it comes to the Éphémères saga, and this rum does not disappoint. We discover a particularly balanced profile, oscillating between power and indulgence, between finesse and expression. The nose is dry, intense but very welcoming and accompanied by a certain freshness. We find everything that makes Saint James's reputation: fine woodiness, dark notes of coffee, cocoa and chocolate, a framework with a roasted sensation and spices that perfectly enhance the olfactory profile. Dried fruits, sugarcane and tobacco complete the aromatic picture. The attack on the palate is round and complex. We find the indulgence of tropical fruits, dried fruits and chocolate, the drying side of tannins, the dark influence of empyreumatic and woody notes, aromas linked to spices, tobacco and sugarcane for the more vegetal side. We find the perfect balance between elegance and exuberance. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish, very long, is even drier. Spices, leather and wood come back strongly, while vegetal notes, tannins and dried fruits perfectly conclude this complete and colorful profile. An excellent cuvée, richer than Number 7 but slightly less complex and deep than Number 1 of the series. It clearly belongs to the high-end of agricole rum.

The struggle starts already with the wax seal 😇 Then it's a nice Agricole with nice spicy notes, but it doesn't completely excite me. Taste-wise with edges and corners, it doesn't reach the nice round and rich mouthfeel of the No.1. A slight alcoholic sharpness finally prevents entry into the 80! points. Ultimately solid.

Tastes like a continental Caroni, just as an Agricole. Great color and nose. I almost suspect a bit overaged, hence very intense flavors of tar, ashtray and red fruits. But just manages to stay on track and doesn't completely drift into bitterness. Not a rum for beginners.

In my experience with St. James, there is always a risk of overpowering woodiness, although the bottlings from the Éphémères series I've tried so far have been exceptions. Here too, the nose doesn't initially suggest too much barrel influence, even though alongside a pleasant fruitiness, there's already a spicy and dark woody aroma. The fruity start on the palate then increasingly gains acidity and ultimately takes a turn towards massive, polished oak with noticeable bitterness. You should also like walnuts with thick skins, over-steeped black tea – almost reminiscent of espresso – and dark chocolate, as well as pronounced spice notes with peppery hints towards allspice, nutmeg, and cloves. For my palate, accustomed to bitterness, this is still bearable, which is why I quite like this rum, but it probably shouldn't get much more intense than this.

First RumX meeting. A broad nose of tropical fruits with lots of vegetal and dry herbs, yellow fruits and citrus as well. The palate is broad, very fruity but always with dry herbs. The wood is pronounced but harmonizes well with the other aromas. The finish is rather long with a pastry, spicy side and dry herbs.

Comparative tasting of the ephemeral 7, 6, 5. I have already enjoyed a bottle of ephemeral 1. Overall, you immediately perceive Martinique. You could also recognize the Saint James touch with its woodiness leaning towards empyreumatic. 7: the nose is more closed than the other two but the palate has a nice balance with woodiness not too present. 5: more woody and spicy profile but also with a touch of glue, varnish, menthol found on the palate. Vanilla well present on the finish. 6: seems to me a bit at the junction of the previous two. Nice length. In the end, these are 3 beautiful juices. Preference will depend on individual tastes. For me, I prefer 7 then 6 and finally 5.

Contrasting worlds: As he breathes in the glass and waits for me, I can hardly wait, a sweet fruity smell attracts me. From No. 1 and 7 I was only semi-enthusiastic; not bad, but also not my highlight. At closer "Hinriechen" then neat barrel, but also fruity citrus aromas and a waxy smell. On the palate then unfortunately full disappointment: Sour and bitter, a lot of wood, tannins and the citrus flavors taste maximum still like a cutting board of wood on which any citrus fruits were cut.For me, unfortunately, far away from top bottling. No idea how you can give this around 90 points....

The nose is much more expressive on exotic fruits: roasted pineapple, candied orange zest which brings a slight bitterness. It’s the most fruity of the collection. You also sense ripe mango, marzipan which slightly dries the nostrils. Vanilla and pepper remain there. A second nose brings very dusty oak markers. The palate confirms the nose on the dominance of fruits in this ephemeral 6. Lots of stewed fruits, but also an orange marmalade. It’s also the spiciest of the series, and it warms the throat. The alcohol is nevertheless superbly integrated. Vanilla is still well present. The wood is rather in the background. The finish is long, but reasonable compared to the 7. The fruity side haunts us for a good while, and the spice warms the tongue for a long time. I really like fairly fruity rums. More than the very spicy or empyreumatic side of some old rums. The bitterness could bother but I liked it well.

On the les Ephemeres I was really excited, because it has given the impression of being something special. And I find it is indeed a beautiful and tasty rum, however, I also share Gunnar's assessment in terms of hype and that he would not be worth 120€ to me, let alone the late sale price. But now to the taste: the association to whitewashed wall I absolutely share and I find, under the sweetness and fruitiness you can still taste that through. Otherwise, I find here still a nice fruitiness even with hints of fruit tea and herbs, wood, a certain mustiness / sea water and glue.At the end I still perceive a certain astringency / peppery / cinnamon. To the RumClub Depaz he comes for but not ran, because he lacks for it complexity.Since I have tasted at this time not too many aged Agricole, I probably still lack something in reference.

Nose: initially slightly turpentine, then cola, cinnamon, roasted marshmallow, brown butter, corn, oak, Maggi/herbs, clove, grass, ending with cola and turpentine with oak and a hint of lemon. Very pleasant nose, very bourbon-heavy. Palate: cinnamon, oak, popcorn, herbs, roasted, corn, dark bitter chocolate, cocoa, creamy mild but intense wood, mineral-earthy, at the end burnt caramel and paprika. Medium-long finish, oak remains even longer. At home on the dark side, very good! Those who like wood will have fun here.

The legs are fat on the walls of the glass. 1st nose on waxed wood, light notes of tropical fruits and roasted almonds. Then it opens on fruits, chocolate and caramel all wrapped in this bewitching waxed wood. After long minutes vanilla settles in. A note of cherry makes a brief appearance. In mouth, what a greediness! We take the same actors as on the nose and we start again. Then the undergrowth and the spices settle on the tongue. Long finish on spices and caramel.

Beautiful burnt color indicating long aging and mandatory rest before tasting. The nose is of strong intensity, very expressive; fruity with cooked banana, stewed ripe fruits, strong spices (black pepper, cinnamon) and pronounced empyreumatic notes: dark chocolate, cigar box, intense wood and finally an intense alcoholic note. On the palate, the aromatic changes tone, and this cask strength transports us with strong alcoholic intensity, dominant spices, tannic (astringent) wood. In the background, the fruity aromas are still present. The finish is very long, first on alcohol, then spices and wood and finally fruit and cinnamon. At the very end of the mouth, I find an aroma of undergrowth and mushroom. Very nice discovery.

Cross-tasting of the 4 Ephemeres Saint James: The 2001 is by far the best. A great, well-balanced Agricole, which is the oldest in the group at 20y, but tastes the least woody and bitter after the 2007, which is the youngest. 2007: nice, rather fruity, 8.3. 2006: bitter and woody in comparison, 7.9. 2005: balanced (8.5), but not as fine as the 2001 (8.9).

A complex bouquet awaits you... You find notes of freshness, a floral that tickles your nostrils all on a bed of fruity sweetness... What a start! Let's go to the palate... A gentle approach that moves to spicy and finally the woodiness appears in a fairly short time... BUT what balance... at the end of the palate at first a touch of astringency appears but the wood from the cask and a spice follow it. Be patient before taking another sip of this nectar and enjoy the long woody afterglow... Top! An excellent rum to taste and to have.

It mainly needs some air first for anyone who is not a hardcore Agricole fan. Then after five minutes, when the alcohol has somewhat dissipated, it becomes enormously fruity on the nose. Zesty-oily orange, bitter citrus, tropical wood, light caramel. Wax, glue and some chocolate behind. Strong, slightly spicy and very captivating. On the palate then thick, sweet and noticeably milder in alcohol than in the nose. Here too, orange and caramel play the leading roles, surprisingly sweet. Followed by wood, chocolate, a hint of lacquer and spicy, not schnapps-like sharpness. In the finish then through and through Agricole, albeit darker in freshness. Long-lasting, enormously potent and fruity.
