Sip this neat and slow: it's a classic DOK Hampden — intense esters, glue and nail polish over grilled pineapple and banana — with the port cask nudging in extra honey, red-berry sweetness and a faint clove-mulled-wine note. Several tasters found the alcohol pushes forward hard at 2 years, so a drop of water helps. Fruity, funky and warm.

On one hand, the nose here is clearly more intense and ester-heavy. On the other hand, there are clearly more red berry fruits, more sweetness, and more pastry notes. Much more intense and balanced than the Sherry cask DOK and overall the best mouthfeel.

On the nose: Intensity of the DOK mark is present. Overripe pineapple, glue, esters and clear cask influence dominate the profile. Taste: Intense, esters, glue, pineapple and little bit of honey. Port cask does bring some solvents and red fruits to the palate. Integration of alcohol could be better. Finish: Esters, pineapples at first and then you get red fruits and some honey. Dry finish. Weak integration of alcohol drops the score for me in otherwise good rum.

Now the DOK with port tire... Nose: a little closer to a usual DOK than the PX. Intense esters again with pineapple. Subtle almond flavors and honey come through before the glue takes over. Overall a bit brighter than the relatively dull PX. 8.1. Palate: nice and intense esters, lots of grilled and thus candied pineapple with honey. Seems a bit bacon-creamy out back. I only detect the Port influence in the slightly increased sweetness. Fits great and tastes good. 8.3 Compared to a Virgin Oak DOK, a bit finer and sweeter but not at all over the top. Ok, were also only 2 years in the barrel.

Experimental Cask Series - Sample #3: very strong similarity to Oloroso Cask. Alcohol not as well integrated as in Virgin Oak. Esters, tropical fruits (primarily pineapple) and solvent dominate here. A longer aging would probably have made the comparison of the different casks more interesting.

8,6:On the nose, intense with esters, nail polish and glue, fermented overripe tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, red, citrus fruits, briny olive, roasted wood notes like chocolate, leather, nuts, with port barrel impact(not overpowering), bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, it becomes spicy, smoky, pastries arise, dried fruits and berries. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is funky, intense, delicious with DOK nicely intermingling with PORT, medicinal notes like esters, solvents, glue, flowery, mineral, candied molasses, sweet with honey, briny olive, dark with licorice, fruits like tropical, green, berries, red and citrus, dried, joined with allspice in a fruit compote.The wood is slightly roasted with caramel, confectionery, spicy with vanilla. 8,6:The finish is medium long, dry&tannic, balanced, with notes from palate lingering on, fresh with tea..

A nice profile in itself, the port sweetness harmonizes nicely with the fruit esters, the heavy sweetness doesn't overpower either - however, the alcohol is noticeably pushing forward here. Unfortunately, it's far too dominant for me, which is why I'm a little more cautious with the points - but High Ester and ex-port cask undoubtedly have potential.

This rum is quite good. I just find it tastes a bit too alcoholic. Maybe because it's from 2020, but I'm not really an expert ;-) But for the relatively cheap price, totally fine.

I have to say I’m positively surprised by this little guy, nice fruity ester notes with great funk. Light berry and honey notes. The Port cask nicely rounds off the Doc, so absolutely not disturbing. Alcohol is also well integrated.

This one is exciting, it got a real clove mulled wine note from the port wine barrel. The finish is quite short and it is also the brightest of the set - despite port wine barrel

Online tasting with Joshua Singh: Sweet tones of honey, tropical fruits and vanila both in the taste and nose. The 👅 is typical hampden however a bit milder, sweeter and smoother with honey flavours subtly present. Probably my least favorite from the set.

A notch better than the Olorosso Cask. Here too, the funky notes dominate and that's a good thing. Overall a tasty comparison that’s fun and sharpens the senses. The price-performance ratio is good.
