Wood, roasted notes and dark dried fruit lead here, with chocolate, prunes and a faint acetone edge underneath. This is a 16-year Coffey-column St. Lucia at cask strength, and the port finish divides people: some love the raisiny "spanische Leder" dryness, others find the tannins and nutty muffiness too dominant and the alcohol not fully tucked in. A rich, drying sipper with real complexity.

This rum has the same basic specs as the Chairman's Reserve from Perola. But the nose is more intense and rounded in comparison, and for me, it's fantastic. Unfortunately, the mouthfeel isn't as well-balanced: woody, bitter, and dry, everything tightens up. A bit of a shame, because the rum has a nice finish again with caramel, vanilla, chocolate, and fruit. Letting it breathe longer helps a bit.

Tasted side by side with RX15629. It really can’t hold a candle to that one. What makes the difference with the same ABV? Two key aspects in my opinion: Pot Still vs. Column Still, no finish vs. Port finish. I really appreciate the Port finish on certain Agricoles, but here it could have been skipped. The Port finish somehow drains the strength and focus from the rum and covers it with a kind of nutty, slightly chemical mustiness. Don’t get me wrong: it’s a great rum. But you really shouldn’t compare it to the highlight RX15629, whose once awarded 91 points I still stand by today.

In direct comparison with the 16y Coffey still from Perola, the tannins from the port wine finish here are much more pronounced and overall a bit too dominant for my taste. Could be a bit more balanced... Still a nice example of how St. Lucia's Coffey still can deliver really exciting results and doesn't have to hide behind Vendome and John Dore!

Today compared again with the other bottling from Rum&Co RX15629. Compared to that, this one is a bit "lighter" and more drinkable. Again a nice Chairman’s bottling that knows how to please. I like it very much. The price is more than reasonable for this rum.

I think this is the third pure Coffey Column St. Lucia rum I've tried after the Perola and the Rhum Attitude. At first, I found it a bit confusing, but now I really like that they’ve got it down too – tropical aged and at a great price. I found the Perola a bit rounder, this one has more glue and fruity sweetness from the finish... the latter is a bit too much for me.

Somehow I find it hard to write something about this. Strange Chairman's. Definitely dried fruits are noticeable, but you can also detect wood/cask. It's very toasty and there's also chocolate here.

#5829 06.10.2025 Relaxing with a few samples while watching the first Equalizer movie. Nose Wood, light earthy, roasted, light coffee, dried fruit, faint acetone, faint chocolate, cherries. Palate Warm, wood, roasted, tobacco, light prunes, light pear, light glue, pepper, faint mint, complex. Finish Long and warm, wood, roasted, dried fruit, light tobacco, spice, faint smoke, light mint. Empty glass Prunes, light smoke, raisin, chocolate, light tobacco.

Really nice sipper, but for me the port influence is already a bit too pronounced here. I will never understand why SLD bottles so many column rums, the pot stills are in a completely different league in my opinion.
