Nobody here treats this 80% Austrian Stroh as a sipping rum — and that's kind of the point. Neat, tasters describe glue, hot alcohol and a burnt-sugar edge that "evaporates in the mouth before you can swallow." A few catch caramel and herbs under the heat, but the near-universal verdict is that it belongs in baking, Feuerzangenbowle, punch and hot tea, not a tasting glass.

Emptied a bottle of this when in Kitzbuhl for skiing vacation as a teenager. It’s only useable as a mixer when your going party, party, party and doesn’t care what you’re drinking.

Not meant to be drunk, I think. Impressive alcohol, both on the nose and in the mouth. The liquid seems to evaporate before reaching the stomach. Taste not very good, but not downright bad either. Excellent for pastry, though.

I don't think it's as bad as it was rated. It's quite alcoholic, as you can imagine at 80%, but you can still detect some caramel and a few herbs. Better than expected :)

Was pretty tipsy when I tried this last night, did not like it at all, it's just a big mouthful of alcaholic pva glue. Sometimes glue is good like in hampden but certainly not here. Very hot on the palate, it seems to just evaporate in the mouth before It can be swallowed. I would drink Bundy yellow label neat before this.

Most of the selected taste and smell selection are based on the water I added, because I don’t dare to sip it pure. It has an intense smell, alcoholic, sugar cane and grainy. Taste has mix a glue, alcohol, grain, burnt sugar and off course watery because I added water to the glass. Not a rum for beginners, but definately worth trying after you went down the rabbit on the do’s and don’t’s when buying this 80% monster!

It is not intended for pure enjoyment. Rather for baking or mixing. However, I think I recognize a trace of Hampden (DOK?). Oh, and the color is already unnatural with a red tinge!

When I see this, I have to think back to the old days when we used Stroh rum for the Feuerzangenbowle on New Year's Eve. Great experiences with low-quality rum. Of course, it doesn't taste like much.

This was the most physically painful rum to drink I've ever encountered. The face I made upon the first sip reminded me of the first time I drank alcohol. Truly unenjoyable, super strong and the opposite of what you'd want in a rum. Plus points for the complexity, 15 minutes after I can still taste all the "unenjoyableness" of it.

I admit, this is neither a serious nor a current review. What happened: The in-laws found a very old Stroh rum in the pantry (definitely check out the pictures!). Father-in-law and I weren't too proud to drink it neat from martini glasses. Since the old rum still had original Jamaica esters, it still smelled very aromatic in the bottle. In the glass, there wasn't much aroma left to smell. Just a hint of rum aroma. Taste-wise, the alcohol dominated mercilessly. The hint of rum aroma was overlaid in the mouth by a musty taste. It was horrible 😫
