This rum from Elizabeth Yard is really dark and claims on the label to be a Port Mourant - if it were, it would be a small sensation, because colored PMs have practically been extinct for decades. I was convinced it wasn't a PM. After 3 tastings, I'm unsure. Tasting No. 1: I have the 2003 Diamonds from Our Rum & Spirits in the glass, 14yo & 13yo. The nose of the EY is clearly more intense than that of the ORSs, but also very similar. Dominant are the notes from the coloring: caramel, roasted aromas, and coffee. Behind that is a very present somewhat artificial cherry, a ripe berry fruit, orange and mango, plus cloves, cinnamon - that brings back memories of the SBS SVL 2003. On the palate, the rum becomes drier and spicier. The fruit notes remain raisins, dried plums, and oranges. It's a bit sour, plus a bit bitter dark cocoa. The alcohol integration is great, but the rum doesn't have 55%. The finish is similar to the palate, not overly bitter, cocoa, cloves, tannins, and some orange marmalade. No. 2: Today again a Diamond session. Included again are the Elizabeth Yard 2003, the Two Flags 1996, and the Nobilis 2003 SVL. The TF1996 is the only confirmed rum from the Diamond Still, because the Savalle was still at Uitvlugt back then. The EY stands out again. Again more intense and in contrast to the SVL and the TF with a resinous note that I didn't perceive yesterday. I stick to the rating, although I like it more and more. No. 3: After a first PM cross-tasting (SBS 1990 and El Dorado 1999), I ruled out that it is a Port Mourant, but now I'm pondering again, also in renewed comparison with the SBS. Three detailed tastings later, I have an idea why one might think it's a PM. The EY has a vegetal spiciness, somewhat resinous, that the other 2003s completely lack - but the typical anise is completely missing. It is much more intense than the rest - but on the palate much milder than real PMs. I'm confused. My first disappointment has faded, the rum has consistently grown on me. +1

#6272 24.01.2026 Online tasting with a few of the guys today. Thank you Peter for the sample gathering and distribution. Nose Light wood, berries, light coffee, faint marzipan, nutts, faint pencil shavings, faint smoke, plum. Palate Wood, light roasted, light leather, light caramel, berries, light chocolate, faint mineral, light earthy. Finish Long and warm, wood, light plum, light chocolate, faint anise. Empty glass Light cherry, prunes, chocolate, light leather.

I'm also not sure whether this comes from the Port Mourant still or not. Not at all on the nose. There are a few salty notes on the palate, but not really the combination of the typical markers. But it doesn't matter: I find the rum quite tasty in any case - a nice surprise.
