Dead Reckoning Rum South Pacific Moscatel Cask 2022
Most tasters land in the same happy place: a Fiji rum where the Moscatel cask genuinely runs the show. Expect dried figs, apricot and plum on the nose, then a round, oily palate of tannic wine-sweetness, pinewood resin, caramel and spice. A few esters and a little glue peek through the wood. At 47% it drinks smooth and easy — one reviewer wished for 55% to give it more punch.

A Fijian rum heavily influenced by the old Muscat cask. The nose offers a myriad of exotic fruits (banana, pineapple, mango), followed by light oak, some esters, spices and vanilla and caramel sweetness. Sweet and inviting. The attack on the palate is very round. The rum is fat, oily and very syrupy. The Muscat cask brings out the tannins, alcohol and sugar. This dominant wineiness de facto eclipses the exotic fruits that lurk in the shadows. The long finish returns to esters, tannins and woody, spicy, caramelized notes. Tropical fruits and dried fruits take a back seat. A smooth, easy-drinking rum that can be a gateway for people to discover new flavors in the world of rum.

Not quite round, a little young, but great vanilla and honey on the finish.

#4257 16.09.2023 Whisky N Rum Show 2023. Price to quality is pretty good in my mind. A fresh and fruity rum with nice spices and roasted wood. Warm and oily palate with a medium to long finish. I really like the floral notes as they compliment the overall profile. The empty glass had a light nuttyness to it.

Very interesting Fiji rum with a cask finish that fits very well. Fully ripe pineapple, burnt rubber and herbs meet with allspice and nutmeg. Aromatically very round and harmonious without being too thin with a pleasant sweetness and acidity and light tannins in the finish.

In the aroma, vinous floral accents and caramel, dried figs and apricots but also wood and molasses. Vanilla and sour pineapple accents in the taste wood dried fruits, spices oak and caramel on the finish dried fruits, some oak, roasted and burnt sugar and cinnamon with hazelnuts.

First of all: make pinewood a tasting note! There's lots of it in the nose. Okay let's see. A 40 year old moscatel cask. Probably full of moscatel drab. Nice. Very noticable. It sort of dampens the funk, but to a nice effect. It's unique. Again the pinewood in taste. Conifere bushes. Red fruits, thick tannic wood/madeira/port and yes moscatel. Heavy! Spicy! We know Fiji makes a powerful spirit but this cask is winning, although it makes a great rum along the way. You gotta love wood though. All the wood. Not you average Fiji but very interesting with bold flavours.

First try of a Fijian rum. Really tasty rum. It is smooth and quaffable. On the nose there are lots of drier fruits, raisins, cherries, coconuts. On the plate there is an initial gentle sweetness (caramel) which is then well balanced with woody and coffee notes. Great quality rum.

Quite a strong cup of coffee for me. But definitely appreciate this taste combo. I feel earth-herbs-flowers

Omg, I dont know if it is good or bad! First taste is like good guayana - leather wood caramel. And suddenly come pines ginger. And then both tastes start to switch in mouth.
Review by Solidfunk
Mango, apricot and plum on the nose. Some oak, a hint of glue. Pours dark orange amber. Very rich smell here. Mouth brings some more glue, light caramel and tangerine. Great complexity. Finishes with some florals and a little pepper. Bottle split thanks to Noama.

It was ok but also felt diluted. This with 55% or more would be a gem.

A very easy drinking Fiji rum. The ABV makes is approachable but a bit flat and thin. The nose is vanilla, pineapple and some floral notes. The mouth was allspice and candied fruit, vanilla and some light esters. Finish is woody, with herbal and spicy notes as well as caramel. Had better from the distillery but a solid middle of the road rum and cask influence a bit unusual

Read full review →I recently reviewed the 20 year old ex-bourbon cask rum from Dead Reckoning. Although this is half its age I must say I have taken just as much enjoyment out of this rum as I did that one. I'm very lucky to have tried both. Again this is highly recommended...
