Thompson Bros. Worthy Park Pot Distilled Jamaican Rum JMWP 2008

Well-liked but rarely loved — that's the honest read here. It's a textbook Worthy Park: ripe banana and pineapple up front, with pear and apple joining in, then oak, black tea and a bit of spice. The esters stay tame for a Jamaican, so it drinks easy. Trouble is, a lot of tasters find the palate flatter than the nose, and the alcohol isn't perfectly tucked in.

8,6:On the nose, tropical fruits with banana, pineapple and pear, oak, roasted, with nuts, cream toffee, dark chocolate, malt, spicy, flowery, grassy molasses and metallic patina, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the rum is creamy, tempting with butterscotch, vanilla, pastry, cookie dough, some dried fruits arise, allspice, the molasses is herbaceous, slightly dark with black tea, perhaps rubber is obvious. 8,6:On the palate, the attack is fruity with tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, pear, later apple and pineapple, creamy, sweet with roasted oak and cream toffee, nuts, some cream, fruitcake, spicy, as the molasses is vegetal, briny, fresh, herbaceous, slightly dark with black tea and when the rum is oxidized, menthol pops up. 8,5:The finish is long, dry and slightly tannic, the oak is toasted with toffee, nutty, butterscotch, spicy with ginger, smoky with crunchy bread, salty, fruity with banana, apple, dried fruits and the molasses is grassy with hay, vegetal with black tea, also chamomile notes come out..

A beautiful, typical Worthy Park. I find it a bit flat, but I'm not sure if I'm a bit out of practice after a week of abstinence. Overall nice, rather slightly bitter-astringent coconut notes. Perhaps a little one-dimensional.

It's classy, bright, and clean from start to finish. It's like a blend of rum and whiskey, funky and clean at the same time. The finish is long and moderate in strength, making it a great everyday drink. This is a good Jamaican rum that you'll want to air out slowly. ----------------------------------------------- Nose: Classy and refined, reminiscent of sherry, esters, and single malt whiskey. Barley, milk tea, watermelon. Light and dense on the palate. On the second sip, chocolate, honey and other sweet notes emerge. Taste: Sweet raisins, followed by rooibos, bitterness of sesame leaves, and tannins like chewing grape skins. There's also a salty note, like a touch of fresh seawater. The palate is moderately spicy and lingers on the finish. Finish: The finish is long, with intense oak nuances, similar to Macallan if I had to guess. On the breath, tropical fruits with esters, a little bit of barley tea and a comfortable finish.

Worthy Park

Avg Rating 8.0/10 over 360 Rums

Worthy Park is Jamaica's true cane-to-glass estate. Its land was granted in 1670, it runs the island's oldest and most efficient sugar factory, and it makes rum from molasses it produces itself. After falling silent in 1962, the distillery was rebuilt from scratch in 2005 and now bottles some of the most respected modern estate rum in the Caribbean.
