Velier Diamond (Port Mourant) <SV>PM 1995
Strictly a neat pour, and one that wants time and a drop of water to open up. Tropically-fruited leading in with fresh pineapple, then heavy oily wood, tobacco, espresso and licorice underneath, with burnt caramel sweetness. The Port Mourant stamp lifts the Savalle blend. A few tasters found it a wild, contrasting drink that fought itself before the long finish pulled everything together.

Oily, complex tropical-Demerara sipper Loved for its oily body and deep tobacco-espresso complexity, though a couple of tasters found it more contrasting than balanced and felt it didn't quite meet the hype.

A nose that is both aromatic and slightly marked by alcohol. Fruity, fresh pineapple, but marked by old varnished wood. Medicinal notes and incredible sweetness. The palate is also somewhat contrasting, with sweetness contrasting with old varnished wood, and fresh fruit battling against fairly pronounced woody bitterness. The alcohol is perfectly integrated here. The finish strangely reconciles everything by bringing these contrasts together. It is elegant and balanced, even though this rum seemed to be made up of contrasts. This is not a rum for beginners, but a beautiful beast, fiery and wild, yet everything ultimately comes together.

A wild, complex fellow, not very balanced. Needs a lot of time and a few drops of water. Did not fulfill the high expectations by far. More convincing the second time you taste it. Great oily mouthfeel, highly complex. However, it still doesn't leave you wanting more.

You can immediately notice the over 80% Angels Share! This first-class Demerara is wonderfully complex with lots of dried fruits, roasted aromas, tobacco, dark chocolate, and burnt sugar. The finish lingers long, showing off this heavy rum! Edit: over time, the opened bottle just keeps getting better +1

Very well-balanced rum with a clear balance between fruit, spice and wood. The nose reveals ripe tropical fruit, vanilla and some caramel. Round and harmonious on the palate, with good depth and fine sweetness, accompanied by spicy and slightly tart notes. The finish is long, warm and pleasant. A rum that impresses with its balance.

Unlike the Rare Collection, here Diamond takes the lead. Exceptionally good, but nowhere near worth the secondary market price.

... Old Velier Demerara rum is the best thing you can taste in the rum world. The rums were aged in the tropics for several years by mistake and nobody refilled the barrel. The Andel tax was 90% or more, which is why the taste is especially full and intense. Even though it is an extra expensive product, I recommend to taste a rum from this series at least once in your life.
Review by Snorre Brouer
Clear molasses on the nose and hints of smoke and medicin. In the mouth the smoke is more present, but in a good way (i am not into way to smoky stuff). It is medicinal, floral and mineral. After resting for a while it starts to come up with some fruity notes. The finish is quite long, but mostly smoke. The abv is well integrated, I would not have guessed 61,5%. But I miss some complexity and power
