Rubber, warm tar and oily "universal wrench" collide with mango, dried raisins and caramel in this 1996 Caroni from Velier, aged 24 years. Several tasters single out a fine menthol note and how well-integrated the 68% alcohol feels. A few find it a touch muted on the nose until it opens up. Rich, dirty and long — proper Caroni.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023 / Whisky Live 2023 / Bottle Opening 2024: Absolutely impressive cask from the Trinidad stock from 1996. Exquisite blend of sweetness, the typical dirty Caroni markers and spice. The consistently high level of the 1996 Velier Caronis is almost unbelievable!

Tasted at the WLP in 2023 and a sample from Jakob (thanks!). A classic 1996 nose with lots of depth, the machine shop notes balanced with very expressive fruit. Slightly less pleasant aromas of smoky oak and overripe mango. Wow! A super-expressive palate. Everything is in place and the evolution on the palate is smooth, complex and satisfying. A loooong finish! With woody and slightly smoky notes, discreet until now. A very fine, assertive rum, elegant and harmonious. The woodiness/smokiness is very present when the glass is empty, but all the aromas are equally present.

Excellent 1996 Caroni - tested against the 21 as a control rum. On the nose - as expected - similar profile with the 96's melange of wood, fruit, dirt, caramel, spice and sweetness. I think the integration of the menthol note in the Paradise is great. The wood maturity is more successful, some individual aromas are more tangible and the whole thing is somehow rounder and surrounded by a candied, bacony note. Already a little more awesome than the already high level and so much rounder, but without losing complexity. on the contrary. Nose: 9.4 Palate: On the palate, Paradise is also immediately ahead ... darker, thicker, sweeter, more intense, rounder and beautifully integrated alcohol. Palate: 9.3 A great rum, which is of course exorbitantly overpriced, but in contrast also delivers. It's not always like this ...

Came here for the 1000th tasting. A truly beautiful drop. A great Caroni, at least the way I can judge it as a small light. I really like the milk chocolate and the creaminess, paired with a bit of dirt and the wood influence. If it wasn't so expensive, I might be tempted to buy a bottle.

A sublime Caroni that totally eclipses the first three releases in the Paradise range. We're clearly in another dimension, with a very expressive and diverse aromatic palette, ranging from hydrocarbons to tropical fruit notes, hot caramel, roasted oak, spices, leather, nuts and smoky notes. A real olfactory delight. On the palate, tropical fruits, notably mango and papaya, mingle perfectly with tar and rubber for a tasty, expressive and elegant whole. Caramel, oak, spices and empyreumatic notes (toasted, smoky) add opulence and body to a rich, complex rum. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. The finish is almost eternal, with the same contrast of greedy fruitiness on the one hand, and dark, empyreumatic notes on the other, swirling between spices, leather, hydrocarbons, oak, smoky and medicinal aromas. A Caroni in all its splendor, complete, exuberant and refined, a true pleasure that unfortunately is not eternal, and comes at a price too.

a very balanced, close to perfectly balanced rum which might be its disadvantage. Not strong on any of the categories on the palate. There are dried fruits, apples, a nice freshness and coconut on the nose. Orange peel on palate and finish. Compared to my recent benchmark, the 1996/1999 Diamond less complex and less depth, so less points.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing rum at the height of its fame, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.

Nose: Hazelnut, light citrus fruit, somewhat floral, slight rubber of an inflated balloon, very slight smoke/ashy, nicely complex and pleasant. Palate: The rubber comes to the forefront, oily universal key, cashew nuts, grapefruit, very pleasant to drink, the oily universal key remains forever on the tongue and especially in the palate. Unfortunately awesome.

One of my first Caronis, but I can fully understand why this rum captivates so many people. It's quite special, but in a good way. This variety of aromas is hardly found anywhere else to this extent. This is truly an extremely delicious rum.
