Velier Caroni Paradise #5 2000
The surprise here is how clean it drinks for a Caroni. The usual tar, rubber and workshop grit are dialed back, and in their place come caramel, dark chocolate, cappuccino and ripe mango. Several tasters clock Demerara vibes on the nose. At 67.5% the alcohol sits astonishingly well-integrated. A round, elegant 2000 vintage — the one purists chasing raw dirt might find almost too polished.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Almost Demerara-like on the nose - oak, caramel, subtle vanilla. On the palate with recognizable barrel influence, well-balanced bitterness. Alcohol very well integrated. Slightly less menthol than other representatives of the vintage. Beautiful complexity.

Wow! The first smell already gives you an idea of what to expect here: Absolute Caroni top class! Intense, spicy and caramelly. The blind tasting reminds me of a Demerara rum (similar to CBH 1998). Caroni comes to perfection on the palate. Lots of wood (but not too much), creaminess and an endless, pleasant finish. An absolute 2000 reference!

My 1000th tasting... something special was needed. And this Caroni is perfect 🤩 I am really thrilled. Pure pleasure from the nose to the finish... I'm really thrilled. Not so classically dirty with dark, sweet berries, but an elegance that is beguiling!

Caroni Paradise #5 (thanks Jakob for sharing) in direct comparison with "Nitz" from the Employees series - my benchmark for the 2000 vintage so far. Very cool ... after pouring still quite similar and very typical 2000, but with more and more standing time the Paradise Nitz takes over - becomes more and more rounded: caramel, vanilla and oak become more prominent - and skillfully complemented by chocolate (rather dark), cappuccino, eucalyptus (very moderate), raisin, tropical fruits (mango, coconut, banana), pastry, varnish, dirty notes (tar, rubber, gunpowder). The Demerara comparison is really not far-fetched. After an hour's standing time, dirty notes are in perfect harmony with round high-end column notes. Paradise is also rounder on the palate and, objectively speaking, a "better" cask - slightly less dirty than Nitz but with a clearly better balance Great! 😍

Powerful 2000 Caroni with impressive depth and balance. On the nose, intense tar and rubber notes, plus dark fruit, spices, and a fine smokiness. On the palate, dense, powerful, and at the same time surprisingly harmonious with dry oak, bitter sweetness, and clear, dirty Caroni DNA. Feels concentrated, complex, and long-lasting without being overloaded. For me, the most convincing representative of the 2000 vintage, clearly top level.

The Paradise competes against the Velier 2000 High Proof (RX5769). The Paradise comes across less dirty on the nose than the High Proof. I also got tropical fruits, cake batter, vanilla, caramel. The palate is also very balanced, with tropical fruit, rubber, workshop, cappuccino, barrel. I'm a bit torn. With Caronis, I just want the dirty workshop notes and the rough edges. It's almost a little too round for me...

A much less dirty caroni 2000 than its siblings! The tar part is less pronounced and more pleasant, while its menthol and medicinal part here turns into a very pleasant mint leaf and eucalyptus! The persistence is really amazing!

My 500th tasting which featured a top-class Caroni! I've never had such a multi-layered Caroni in the glass; eucalyptus, caramel, black tea, papaya and some tar on the nose develop further on the palate. Here come cappuccino, rubber, leather, licorice and mango. All aromas are clearly noticeable and harmonize perfectly! I love this rum!

I prefer #5 over # 4. Similar on the nose but more intense, richer, more edgy. Dried fruits, leather, caramel, polish. Very well balanced close to perfection. Not as complex or intense as my recent benchmark 1996/1999 Diamond. But in its balanced character close. Or am I guided by the Caroni flash? It’s a Velier Caroni, it has to be good!

#6099 21.12.2025 Time for some real rum to clean up my palate after having a small tasting with my friend. Nose Medium intense, wood, light mint, diesel, faint smoke, dried fruit, light anise, light tar, faint rubber. Palate Oily, wood, warm, faint coffee, diesel, light tar, light rubber, banana, faint smoke, light anise, cherry. Finish Long and warm, wood, light dry, light tannins, cherry, light caramel, light mint. Empty glass Light tar and rubber, cherry, light diesel, faint smoke, light mint, faint chocolate.

I tasted this Caroni at Velier Live 24. It is a great Caroni! Not as "dirty" as many others bottled by Velier but no less good! The alcohol is really perfectly integrated. The nose is caramelized, with notes of coffee and eucalyptus. On the palate it is at its best: it is a dense, creamy rum, as the color that can be glimpsed from the clear, hand-blown glass bottle already suggests. It is a balanced but at the same time very complex rum with menthol, chocolate and licorice notes. The finish is really persistent and long.

Simply great. A little more caramelly than Nitz and Basdeo, but also wonderfully pointed and complex. Alcohol integration is incredibly good, rarely seen anything like it. A masterpiece of a rum.

Caramel, light wood, light rubber, fruitiness, oiliness, and creaminess

Vintage 2000. I rate it 9.0 out of 10, belongs to the absolute top among more than 1,300 rums I've ever scored.

Cigar‑box, kerosene and ester notes are wonderfully balanced and full‑bodied. Its overall quality outshines every employee series expression I have tried. It feels like a more complete and well‑rounded HTR. I cannot wait to try the paradise 1996s.
