Velier Foursquare Raconteur 2006
Coconut, vanilla and burnt caramel over roasted nuts and dried fruit, with the Oloroso adding a nutty, lightly chocolatey layer that sits alongside the classic Foursquare markers rather than smothering them. Most tasters find it creamy, spicy and warm. The recurring gripe: the 61% alcohol pokes through more than in some other Velier Foursquares, and the finish runs a touch short.
The community says- Creamy chocolate-nut depth
- Oloroso adds fruit
- But: Alcohol a bit hot

How does Velier Foursquare Raconteur 2006 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Nutty, spicy Foursquare with Oloroso depth Loved as one of the better Velier Foursquares — nutty, spicy, well-aged. But plenty feel it's "more of the same," with slightly hot alcohol and a short finish holding it back.

The nose is very nice once opened, very indulgent on the palate, with a strong chocolate presence and a little spiciness. The finish isn't long enough for me, which is the weak point that stops me from giving it a 9. In summary, my tasting notes: On the nose: Dried fruits, Sherry, Woody, Glue, Tropical fruits On the palate: Creamy, Dark chocolate, Sherry, Dried fruits, Spicy, Tropical fruits The finish leans more towards: Chocolate, Tannins, Spicy

Nice foursquare! but for me not quite at the level of destino, absolutio or plenipotenzario. A little too beastly, but still delicious 😁the oloroso cask intensifies the nutty notes significantly! The alcohol integration could be much better, otherwise the score might be higher.

As quite quaffable to describe, but just Foursquare. Since not my taste, it remains with the tiny sample.

23.08.2025 Retasting celebrating a IV charms birthday. ---------------- #4160 Finally got home after 4 days in Berlin. The number of this tasting is not in the right order, but I'll just continue from here when I add the rums sampled in Berlin 😊 This one is an OK rum, but not the best they've done. Fruity with nice well integrated wood and a lovely spicy palate. The caramel is light as is the glue note on the nose. Long warm finish. Draws thick slow moving curtains and the empty glass is really nice and I can pick up some chocolate, floral and light medicinal notes.

Overall a fantastic and very complex rum. We were some friends teaming up at Cane Rum Society in Stockholm to celebrate Foursquare Appreciation Day. After our planned tasting of four different Foursquare ECS’s led by our friend the Swedish importer, Lars Renbjer, we went on with two Foursquare Velier releases. First out was the Raconteur the 8th rum in the collaboration between Luca Gargano of Velier and Richard Seale of Foursquare. Raconteur is a blend of rums distilled in 2006 in Coffey column stills and double copper retort pot stills. The first rum in the blend was aged in ex-bourbon casks for 17 years, while the second benefited from a double maturation: 5 years in ex-bourbon casks, then 12 years in old oloroso sherry barrels. This release, of 4800 bottles, is the oldest offered in the Foursquare Velier series.
Review by Joachim Guger
Massive milk chocolate on the nose. Otherwise typical Fourquare. Round, balanced, not too complex, alcohol well integrated. As expected, a very good rum. Craft top and very drinkable. New territory? No. Lines up well-behaved in the second quartile. Thanks to Bonn for the sample! Edit: Now leisurely the rest of the sample. Immediately after pouring it is a bit more complex and becomes round and balanced after about 30 minutes. Must say that it is one of the better Fourquares, goes in the direction of Plenipotenziario (Mango), without reaching its class.

Velier FS (+ a fee spected other contenders) blind cross tasting: Honestly, the results here were very close. The Belier bottlings display a very high quality thourgout the range. Triptych and Pleni came out on top for me closely followed by Destino. I was somewhat surprised, that Sassafras and 2006 came out rather at the bottom, while I enjoyed both very much on their own. Raconteur also quite low in the ranking with Principia clearly at the bottom.
Review by Oliver
In the nose much fruitier and a little lighter than the Destino. Great aroma! On the palate creamy, spicy and somewhat edgy. Very good, but the alcohol is integrated in the Destino but again ne number better. The Oloroso maturation is noticeable, but not too dominant. Very good Foursquare, but to my taste does not reach the epic quality of the Destino.
Review by Leo Krüper
Excellent Foursquare with a lot of depth. Certainly belongs to the best Foursquares next to Sassafras and Pleni. Needs some time in the glass, but then delivers great. The sherry note is also not as dominant as in the Principia, but rather acts as a pleasant complement. Unfortunately expensive, but that's life.
Review by zabo
Edit: The Swell and the Barbados 2006 Flag Series have been added to the big crosstasting of the Velier bottlings. Unfortunately it has not yet been possible to get a sample of the 70th. In general, it can be said that there were no major differences on the nose when flying blind. However, there are recognizable differences in the taste itself. In my opinion, however, three clearly stand out and bring up the rear. Still too sharp-edged at the back for me, a little more intense in terms of aromas compared to the ECS, but very questionable for the price. I did buy another bottle for my wife, but I probably wouldn't have gone for it again on my own. After it has breathed longer or with a few drops of water, it becomes more accessible

I find it extremely good! Here a 17 year tropical maturation with nice chocolate and coconut notes come together with a great oloroso finish with complementary fruity notes. Must taste soon with my Foursquare favorites Hereditas and Destino.
Review by Giorgio Garotti
Oh wow! This foursquare is really crazy! Balance and mouthiness from start to finish! The many years in barrel and the oloroso finish give it a beautiful complexity and flavors that I love! You can't ask for more from a rum!
Review by Galli33
Really nice foursquare profile with tropical aging! The oloroso cask is notable and well integrated, without overwhelming. The alcohol is perfect integrated, what makes this one a really good sipper.

Then it was time for this exciting Foursquare 🥃 - The taste is very strong and rich in the mouth with notes of burnt caramel, spices and tea - it has a long and tasty aftertaste - I think this Raconteur is very well balanced and is definitely one of my favorites among Foursquare 👍😁

8,9:On the nose, the first impressions are going towards the classical Bajan range with coconut, dried fruits, caramelized, bourbon touch, woody, baking spices, as cinnamon, nutmeg, glue, underneath we notice some tropical fruits with passion fruit and banana. Darker notes are coming from sherry maturation and are also nicely roasted, as milk chocolate, roasted nuts. There is also some metallic note and some dryness.Aeration brings out even darker notes with roasted nuts, leather, cocoa powder, smokiness and even coffee, as vanilla expresses here a bit intensively. Balanced and harmonious..... 8,6:On the palate, the attack is pretty strong with spiciness, wood, nuts, bourbon notes with yellow fruits and buttery caramel, pastries and dried fruits, as dried dates, chocolate, candied fruits. Now it becomes more dry, the wood is toasted, as coconut, we notice tannic character and citrus as it is a bit astringent. Later some medicinal notes come out, metallic and iodine, is a bit smoky and salty, bitterness cannot be overlooked. 8,5:The finish is long, dry, with lots of toasted wood, citrus, tannins, dried fruits, is roasted with burnt and caramelized sugar, warm with sweet spices. In the end, there is some leather... Edit:8.6.25, 😃

Rum tasting number 100! 🥳 so why not try something slightly special like the Raconteur. A fantastic foursquare, I really like what they put out. It doesn't really go beyond the ECS rums I've tried tried but very good indeed. A great nose, Full bodied, creamy, spicy and I get vanilla, chocolate and caramel on the palate, coconut? Some fruits as well. Powerfull but well integrated. I'm not sure that it deserves all the velier hype that goes with it but it's a great rum. Medium to long finish. Would be interesting to do a comparison tasting with the origional 2006.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A lovely Foursquare that opens with an intense, gourmand nose of red fruit and raisin aromas. Pineapple and coconut are part of the scenery, but greediness returns with warm spices (nutmeg, vanilla, sweet pepper) and milk chocolate, topped with caramel and a hint of crème brûlée. Notes of honey and burnt sugar echo these sweet, generous notes, but are counterbalanced by a smoky, roasted touch and a hint of glue that add complexity to the nose. Not revolutionary, but very pleasant and controlled. The palate is warm and spicy. Vanilla, nutmeg and pepper follow, accompanied by chocolate, caramel and hazelnuts. The warmth returns with notes of tobacco and smoke, giving power to the palate. Bourbon and coconut bring out the sweetness, accentuated by dried and exotic fruits. The profile is powerful yet well integrated. The finish is long, with a mellow, gourmand framework on the Foursquare markers, as well as a more atypical touch of leather and smoke. A rum that breaks away a little from the traditional Foursquare spirit, with beautiful fruity and smoky notes, a nice roundness and which is very controlled despite its intensity.
Review by Jakob
Nice foursquare, accentuated roasted aromas, concise spices, as well as the dried fruit notes to be expected in view of the storage in ex-Cognac barrels, but I also recognize subtle fresh fruity hints. I like it, another successful selection from Velier!

Rankings of 6 Velier Foursquare from cross-tasting (sans 2006 & Destinos) 1. Pleni [Excellent deep foursquare profile that sets itself apart from the pack with a delectable tobacco note and a long pleasant finish] 2. Patrimonio [I love it. The most clearly Sherry-marked of them all and it’s just an ideal complex sipper. The finish cuts out slightly too early to make it top boy] 3. Triptych [intense, flavorful, and very solid but the profile is a little too molasses syrupy for my taste] 4. Raconteur [very good but just lacks a little bit of personality compared to the ones above. The finish is also noticeably shorter compared to the top 3.] 5. Sassa [great jumping attack out the gate but the slightly astringent aftertaste drags it down] 6. Principia [too sharp, alcohol less well integrated, still a more than fine rum of course] Kudos to Leo Tomczak for samplers

Solid Foursquare... Alcohol could be better integrated. Oloroso aging adds a little more fruit than usual with FS that I quite like .
Review by Serge
Very good, without question. But it didn't blow me away. Update: I've now opened my bottle, bottled the split and am tasting it a second time - this time from the Cognac swivel. Either it's the glass or I just like it better this time. I'm going up a point
Review by Tschusikowsky
For me one of the best Foursquare bottlings to date. I really enjoy drinking it. Everything you would expect is there. Creamy, spicy, slightly toasty, a hint of smoky flavors. The Foursquare markers are there, it's round but complex and powerful. It also has a good amount of esters. Very good rum.
Review by Tim
The ageing in sherry casks is clearly recognizable on the nose and it is a very good and round rum that plays in the same league as the usual FS ECS. Nothing else expected, but I wonder whether this price is worth it when you can get a similar quality ECS for half the price. Not really better than a Sovereignty, for example. The point of criticism at this high level lies in the medium complexity of the nose and the high dry sharpness in the mouth.
Review by mto75
today's battle: the 2006/17yr Raconteur (5 yr ex-bourbon + 12 yr ex-oloroso) against the 2006/14yr Sassafras (3yr ex-bourbon + 11yr cognac). The differences are not soooo big now (isn't that the case with all FS 🫢), both with vanilla / barrel, the coconut markers, both very drinkable...the Raconteur seems to me but still a nuance more mature and round, although that does not necessarily appeal to me more (old cocoa powder and orange come to mind). With the Sassafras, I like the slightly more 'angularity' and also the slightly more fruitiness. On the finish, the Sassafras also has a nice chocolaty, caramel sweetness that I miss in the Raconteur. But both are clearly the top FS shelf!
Review by Mike H.
83 points. Nothing to write home about. Probably a must have rum for the Foursquare crowd, just more of the same for the others.
Review by Jarek
I somewhat understand the criticism about too dominant alcohol, but it doesn't bother me here. I find it quite good. Addendum: tasted today with Destino and Absolutio. My first impression is confirmed. Delicious Foursquare with a successful finish.
Review by Mentalo
Nice creaminess, spices, coconut with fruit. The Oloroso finish does not overwhelm the rum but also brings relatively much sweetness. Overall, the finish bothers me compared to the Plenipotenziario.
Review by Thunderbird
So, I have the "rare" 😉 Raconteur also times in the glass. On the nose I perceive the typical Foursquare aromas coupled with a high alcoholic note. At 61% but okay. On the palate this rum is more on the dark side, chocolate, wood, allspice and black tea...this continues on the relatively short finish.... A good rum, but the hype at this bottling I do not understand
Review by Basti
The nose is very restrained at first. Coconut is perceptible, spices and wood. With more time in the glass (1-1.5 hours), the aromas become more present. Falls somewhat short in crosstasting with other Velier bottlings. Lacks some complexity on the palate. Compared to the Patrimonio, the sherry influence is surprisingly less dominant here.
Review by Fred Tillac
👃 As soon as you open this Foursquare showing its strength, it's best to let it air out for a few minutes. Pepper teases the nasal appendage. Coconut, dried fruit, caramel and a little vanilla complete the ball. 👄 On the palate, chocolate, wood and a little vegetal are added. Fat and warm. The finish is rather long. The alcohol content has something to do with it. A fine work of art, balanced between strength and sweetness without being remarkable 👍
Review by Steffmaus🇩🇰
I was surprised to see the 61% ABV, as the rum is real smooth. Very well integrated. I'm getting dried fruit and oak in the nose, and from the notes I got raisin, coconut, oak and a long aftertaste, with spicy hints
Review by cigares
A nose of equal parts wood, sweetness, acetone, vanilla, coconut and overripe fruit. The alcohol is perfectly integrated and you almost have to look for it. The palate is livelier, acetone and glue followed by dried fruit, red fruit (cherry), sweetness and wood in that order. On the finish, the Sherry and red cherry are felt right to the end, with a hint of old leather. Despite its qualities, it doesn't quite convince me, especially after the Plenipotensario and Sassafras.

Quick test in a nice round, will rest again in peace: Nose: Sherry is already clearly present, but also the foursqare with coconut. The long tropical aging provides a full volume. The quality is clearly there. 8.6 Palate: 12 years oloroso! This is already very intense. Smoky-spicy, sweetly woody. 8.6
Review by ...and a bottle of Rum.
Immediately after opening the bottle, the first nose was "ui, he can do something". Very compact and intense Foursquare profile. The Oloroso adds a nutty note. Coconut pours from the sample bottle, as I've only known from the Destino. Interestingly, the usual vanilla and caramel notes tend to dominate from the glass, coconut more in the background. No alcohol on the nose, even if you keep your nose deep in the glass. On the palate, a typical Foursquare profile with a touch of nuttiness. Fine part, there will probably go another bottle in the Ragal - provided there is him again at the Augabepreis. Unfortunately horny.

The hype was great after the release of the bottle. Therefore, I could not avoid a tasting. Very pleasant to drink. The alcohol is extremely well integrated. For me, in the end, a very solid rum. But at 200 or 300 euros per bottle, I expect something more recognizable.
Review by Benoit Mahe
An excellent foursquare!
Review by ilRummista
For me one of the best Foursquare bottled by Velier. A rum of great character and complexity. The nose is strong but at the same time vanilla-like. The palate is truly a giant rum, with hints of dark chocolate and a slightly "creamy" texture. Must buy at least two bottles!
Review by Alex1981
Solid FS, the Oloroso finish gives it a nice fruityness that is embedded in some baking spices & caramel notes. Alcohol is a bit stingy, but otherwise well integrated. Not outstanding, but still another highlight in the Velier FS range
Review by F.L.O.
In direct comparison with Sassafras, it scores slightly less well. On the nose, it is less intrusive than the Sassafras. Taste-wise, it is noticeably sharper on the tongue. The alcohol dominates quite a bit the longer it stays in the mouth. Still a very tasty Foursquare with a typical Foursquare profile. Update June 2024: goes up 1 point after I tried several Foursquare rums in recent days and this one is clearly better. Only - still - criticism: the alcohol is a bit too present.
Review by CaRaph
Lots of differents flavours in the nose, especially fruits, but also caramel, vanilla, honey, wood and small hints of tea and tobacco. Mouth is warm and powerful then softens quickly. Finish is long and as delicious as the nose. Some hints of wood, coconut, dark chocolate, tea and pepper in the empty glass. I dont regret getting a bottle :)
Review by Buddudharma
An above-average Foursquare, which, however, also comes across as too well-behaved and interchangeable. For the money, there are far more exciting rums...
Review by Andzin
Ooo, this is close to my Olymp. So great and comperable to previous Foursquare releases by Velier. So much good.
Review by Johnny Rumcask
Boredom, thy name is Foursquare. Another potstill-column blend that can't be beat for triviality and has been given some flavor via sherry. The rum is about as exciting as watching the grass grow or apple spritzer.
Review by Schnubbii
On the nose the typical Foursquare notes of vanilla, cloves and also slight wood. On the palate the Foursquare profile is completed by a somewhat nutty aroma from the Oloroso portion. Delicious and harmonious, unfortunately the alcohol pushes a bit more here than in other Foursquare releases. A little water does it good, yet the alcohol remains more present and not as well integrated as in other Foursquare bottlings. Medium-long finish with vanilla and some nuttiness. A successful Foursquare, but for me it doesn't play in the top league.
Review by Skyfly
If I had to describe an ideal typical FSQ, it would probably correspond to this flavor profile - lots of wood, caramel, coconut, dried fruits, nuts, and chocolate harmonize simply fantastically!

And again it comes to light. Oloroso is the absolute best sherry to store rum in. The foursquare goes in all the right directions and leaves you wanting more. Really gives some nice bitter notes too. This is nice
Expert review by Zucker und Zeste
The long tropical maturation period and the interesting mix of barrels give the Raconteur a strong aroma profile. The rum is fun, the craftsmanship is excellent, but it is not the best that has come out of the collaboration between Gargano and Seale. Nevertheless, I am happy to own this bottle, because the rum is a relaxed after-work sipper.
