Savanna The Very Rare Cask (Traditional C20) 2000
Roasted oak, spice and a wash of dark fruit lead here — prunes, blackberry, some coffee and chocolate, with the old Savanna floral note tucked behind. After 19 tropical years the wood really takes charge; several tasters call it "smooth and very complex" but flag the bitter, astringent finish. The 59% is beautifully hidden. Different from Savanna's fruitier, funkier bottlings.

How does Savanna The Very Rare Cask (Traditional C20) 2000 taste?
From community reviews · summarized with AI
Wood-forward old Savanna with dark fruit Loved for its balance and buried alcohol, but the long tropical aging tips it wood-heavy — a few found it too oaky and bitter on the finish for their taste.

This is a very balanced and pleasant Savanna. Delicate fruit aromas on the nose, pronounced caramel, vanilla, barrel and spice aromas on the palate. Subtle red fruits are also recognizable. It is medium-long with red dried fruits combined with barrel and coffee. I like it quite a bit... something for the evening.

Rums from the Savanna distillery are among my favorites. I recommend everyone try especially the ester-heavy pieces like Grand Arome or HERR. You haven't felt so much fruit in just a few drops of liquid for a long time.

Best Savanna so far for me. The 19 years wonderfully executed, no silly cask finish. Wonderfully balanced and still with edges and corners. Great rum, unfortunately very rare and expensive.

Tasted against RX16261. Both very good in their own way, meaning: They are quite different but I like both equally well (today). While the 19-year-old Traditionnel really feels round, ripe, and smooth, the young HERR breaks out like a wild foal in several directions one after another, first sweetly perfumed, then smoky, finally tart-fruity with a tendency towards gooseberries. Compared to the HERR Japan Tribute 1 (RX219), the HERR Japan Tribute 3 is a small light but shines pleasantly independently due to its wild character with recognition effect. The Traditionnel scores with very well integrated alcohol; you don't even notice the 59%. Great art!

On the nose, the fruit is restrained, more in the form of dried fruit. Wood, caramel, and spice are more in the foreground. On the palate, this ratio continues, wood in front, dried plum and some blackberry in the background. The finish adds only a bit of coffee and coconut. Overall, a bit too woody for my taste. I rarely use 'bitter' in descriptions, but it fits here. Addendum: Today I tasted the rest of the sample and let the rum sit in the glass for quite a while. The nose now pleases me much more, fruitier and sweeter. Therefore, I raised the rating a bit. The palate confirms this impression.

The nose is incredibly impressively aromatic with rich blackberries, vanilla pastry, red grapes, slightly medicinal and phenolic. On the palate, the 19-year aging is definitely noticeable. Bitter, astringent, roasty and heavily spicy. Some caramel and lots of tannins from the wood, plus dried fruits and roasted coconut chips and strong coffee. Nice piece but personally too much wood influence for me.

Compared to the Savana bottlings I know, hardly any fruity aromas are noticeable here. Spices, wood, caramel dominate here, which is not surprising given 19 years of tropical aging. The profile reminds me of bottlings from Barbados or Belize.

Nice aging with lots of astringency and some bitterness. Dark fruit (plum, prune but also some blackberry), chocolate and wood glue in the background. I really like the wood in the lead here. Thanks Rod for the sample 🙏

In a direct comparison, today I tried both the second and third releases of this Rare Cask Series. Somehow, I liked number 2 a little better. But admittedly, both are at a good level.

06.11.2021 Another visit to "Den Danske Rom & Whiskyfestival and once again with special access and many very drunk people both days. Notes. Medium intense rum with nice roasted wood and light fruit. The palate is warm and medium dry with a touch of coffee. The finish is long and warm with some dried fruit.

Nice complexity! I would like to see a little more fruity notes. A little too astringent for me.

Not normally a big fan of old Savannas, I like this one. A woody nose with discreet fruit in the background and a sensation of prunes. On the palate, it's the wood that takes over for me. Spicy, slightly astringent. The wood does, however, allow some fruit to escape in the aftertaste. Rather bitter, coffee-like finish. Rather pleasant.

Beautiful bottle from Savanna. On the other hand, is it worth its price? Certainly not. Otherwise, a bomb of prunes and spices. A bit of bitterness. Very very good.
Review by Filip Šikula
Second release of this wonderful series from my favorite Savanna. On the nose a classic fruit load, however very rounded by 19 years of aging in ex-cognac French oak, which is even more pronounced in the taste. Beautiful long finish.

Really interesting on the nose. On the palate with a strange aftertaste. The alcohol is well integrated.
Review by Kirss972
An old dry and woody rum where spices, dark fruits, and coffee blend in the mouth with controlled power.
Review by Niels
Good tasting, only thing is a bitterness comes at the end which disturbed me a lot, which lowered the score. On the nose it is really top!!

Smooth and very complex
Review by Rodolphe
At first, the nose is mainly woody: chocolaty, roasted, spicy. Behind these woody aromas, I recognize the freshness and floral aromas of traditional Savanna. With aeration, some more pastry-like aromas develop, bitter almond, like Cleopatra’s glue (a whole era! 😉). So the nose is very pleasant and beautifully complex. I always find it harder to describe the palate. But the woody aromas dominate. It is very pleasant, the alcohol is well integrated. However, there remains a certain astringency in the finish that I find a bit unfortunate. It remains a very beautiful rum, different from the other profiles of the distillery and which once again shows the great variety that Savanna can offer.
