20.07.2019 Nice private blind tasting where we put tinfoil around the bottles we brought. That ended up being a great evening. Notes Medium dark in colour. 🥃 Continuing with the bonus from the last PokeRhum evening! After the impressive Foursquare 1998, heading to the island of La Réunion with a little gem from Jimmy's cellar to celebrate his first season with us. And what a gem... 🥃 Savanna Lontan Grand Arôme 2004 – 64.2% Whaaaat?! 😲 This is exactly the kind of rum that reminds you why you fell into this passion. A true aromatic monster bottled at its natural strength, concentrating everything La Réunion can do crazily well in terms of Grand Arôme. Distilled in 2004, bottled in 2016, made from molasses and vinasses with an exceptionally long fermentation of 5 to 10 days, then fully aged in ex-cognac barrels... On paper, it already sets the tone. And yet, after a huge Hampden lineup, when the palates were already quite saturated, this Savanna managed to steal all the spotlight. 💥 👃 On the nose, it's an explosion: brine, varnish, plum, green olives... a totally uninhibited, exuberant and confident profile. 👄 On the palate, it's powerful, intense, almost wild, but always controlled. The Grand Arôme markers are omnipresent and stretch towards an endless finish on red fruits, with a slightly tangy strawberry note that lingers on the palate for many minutes. Clearly, this is not a rum for everyone. But for lovers of Grand Arôme profiles — of which I am obviously one 😁 — it's a true bomb. This is an old bottling that has absolutely nothing to envy to recent releases. Quite the opposite... ❓ The real question now: how can such a rum only score a small 80/100 on RumX?! I still don't understand... 🤯🥃

An old bottling from a distillery I particularly like given the alcohol strength and its classification as grand arôme, I let it rest in the glass for almost six hours difference. Other grand arômes, you find notes of polish, solvent, a fairly high aromatic power, big finish on the wood, the solvent is somewhat citrusy. The nose stays on olive and strawberry but the palate is much more woody with even tobacco notes.
