Fine Drams New Yarmouth Old Jamaican Rum (Aficionados) NYE 1994
One taster called this "a quality sipper" and I get why. It's a 26-year tropically-aged New Yarmouth: coconut, sahne toffee, vanilla and dark chocolate up front, with roasted wood, leather and figs building underneath. Several found it woodier and more roasty than the sweeter 94 NYs, with an astringent, tannic edge. At 68.5% the alcohol reads well-integrated to most, but a few call it forceful.

Comparatively bitter New Yarmouth 1994, which shows the typical sweetness DNA, but in addition already shows clear aging characteristics. The barrel has worked and, in addition to the obligatory vanilla, toffee and coconut notes, also bitter wood influences and tart leather notes flow in. However, all this remains within absolutely tolerable limits; in fact, I don't dislike these rough edges, the quaffable sweetness gets a clear counterpoint. Beautiful selection.

For a change, a very different style from the otherwise quite similar 94 New Yarmouth vintages. Very dark, roasted coffee beans, mocha, leather, tobacco, 90% dark chocolate, sweet and sour red grapes, overripe banana, toasted oak barrel, umami, salty, smoky and astringent with intense but pleasant tannins. A welcome change from the otherwise sweeter 94 NYs. The alcohol is perfectly integrated, the finish is almost infinitely long and in general this 94 is simply a lot of fun if you get involved!

A nose of sweetness, caramel, dried fruit and lots of tropical fruit. Slightly bitter and acidic on the palate, but elegantly fruity. The finish develops a fairly strong astringency and noble bitterness. This rum has a marked but far from interesting wood history. The empty glass is reminiscent of an old church, with varnished wood, light smoke and incense.

87 points. A rather classic 94 New Yarmouth with all the classic aromas and flavours of the vintage present. 68.5 % ABV are rather well integrated. A big plus is the 35cl bottle. I would love to see more of these in the future. We had a cigar get together and a rum novice was present, out of The Last, a 1991 Enmore and the NY this one was his favourite 😂

A little cross-tasting with the two Fine Drams and the FRC Village. All three need a lot of time in the glass before they open up. All three are very good 94er NY, but don't reach the top. Benchmark remains the RA for me here! The Fine Dram with 68.5% is the winner here. Despite the high alcohol content, it comes across very pleasantly creamy. The nose is quite restrained, but on the palate it shows its potential, dominating (even though the barrel is clearly noticeable). For me, the most harmonious NY tonight. Second is the FRC. The sweetness of the sherry finish is clearly noticeable but still just fits. Third is the Fine Dram with 68%. It is very brutal and not quite as balanced. In summary, all are consistently very good bottlings.
Review by Gunnar Böhme "Bauerngaumen" 🤓
A brute tropical aged rum. For me, he wants too much with the head through the wall. In the process, subtleties fall by the wayside. Within the tasted trio (see photo) he occupies the respectable third place. I really would not have expected.

In direct comparison with the sister cask bottling, I perceive more fruity aromas here, especially dried fig. Overall quite round and the alcohol is also very well integrated. For me, one of the better 1994 NYs with a great PLV.
Review by Serge
Tasted against the sister bottling with 68% This one stands out quite slightly more but also seems to me minimally more diverse. Good rum, but no exception 94er - PLV is but top and thus uneingeschrenkt to recommend.
Review by Leo Krüper
More rounded, balanced, even more chocolaty than the 68%. I like it a little better.

Palate Oily, wood, light vanilla, light coconut, light roasted, light dried fruit, light chocolate, light orange, light caramel. Finish Long, wood, light caramel, light figs, spice, light orange. Empty glass Vanilla, cinnamon, chocolate, light raisin, light berries.
Review by Alex1981
More complex and layered NY compared to the Fine Dram sister, but same outstanding DNA. Ticks all the boxes of a great old Jamaican, wonderful! //update: this one was the winner tonight compared to the sister cask

Now the beautiful, old, tropically matured NY. Will please me. Nose: clear, also here the 68.5% demand neat. Now my nose had already smelled itself in a bit and the fruity-sweet aromas quickly close up. First there's coconut, accompanied by papaya and passion fruit. Right behind that, vanilla, lots of cream toffee and oak. Very nice, intense and, aside from the high ABV, unobtrusive. 8,9 Palate: oh nice, different than expected. Clear, powerful and intense, but mainly spicy-soapy, with violets. Kind of creamy, dark chocolate with gingerbread. Coconut in addition. All accompanied by a slight bitter note. Fits together wonderfully, though. On the finish, the soapy impression remains accompanied by coconut, umami and chocolate. 9,1 What challenges me, what keeps me busy longer and what then still tastes deserves good points.

Nah, I think the alcohol is poorly integrated here. You can recognize a lot of coconut, but also a slight sweetness in the form of caramel and vanilla. Not a truly outstanding New Yarmouth, but still a very tasty and solid one :)

This rum surprised me a little bit since I haven’t had much experience with New Yarmouth and wasn’t sure what to expect. I found far less fruit on this than many others seemed to experience. For me this was woody and sweet, vanilla and spice. There were hints of dark and dried fruit lurking behind the big wood and brown sugar sweetness. All in all, this felt like a very smooth, well aged and high proof version of the kind of sweet aged rums I ‘used to like’ but which today I would find uninteresting. This was far better though and as such was nice to drink and oddly nostalgic.
Review by Boletus
From the smell to the finish, there is a very nice development from lighter and fruity notes to the roasted and dark side of the flavor wheel, without losing the typical basic orientation of the 1994 NY profile. Super tasty!

Excellent NY94!

Today the two 1994 New Yarmouth from Fine Drams Aficionados. The 68% bottling is a bit fruitier, while the 68.5% is a bit spicier and toastier. I like both very much and the price-performance ratio fits. Overall, I like the 68.5% just a little better, also because of the clearer notes of coconut.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A high-quality New Yarmouth offered by Fine Drams, with a very appreciable 35 cl format. The nose is open and focused on sweetness with fruits (exotic, coconut, citrus, raisins), milk chocolate, caramel and toffee. The oak wood is very well integrated into the profile and enhances the aromas with glue and spices (pepper, chili, vanilla). It's a rich, roasted, intense nose but full of indulgence. On the palate, we find an ultra concentrated side, very easy-drinking and remarkably round. Coconut, dried fruits, caramel and toffee offer a festival of indulgence, then the profile is adorned with more striking notes on roasting, coffee, mocha, dark chocolate, leather and the spices already mentioned. An extremely pleasant profile on the palate. The alcohol is superbly integrated for the strength. The finish is long, dry, bitter on chocolate and coffee, oak cask, spices, caramel, dried fruits and coconut. Although there is a contrast with this darker facet, the profile remains smooth and elegant. In direct comparison with the other New Yarmouth 1994 from Fine Drams, this one is paradoxically more indulgent and accessible even though the alcohol level is higher. If the two vintages have similarities, this one is slightly softer, more subtle and more marked on the aromas, hence the slight difference in points.

A very good rum, of the two New Yarmouths bottled by Aficionados x Fine Drams I prefer it to the other 94. This one definitely has a very good nose and great character although the palate comes across as not very "tame" at times. It is a bit too strong and overpowering. However in any case it is a complex drink but one to be made.

A nice balanced profile and mostly typical of that 94 basket. One vegetable note for me doesn't really fit here.
Review by Pavel Spacek
Beautifully sweet, creamy, like caramel. Great choice for rum lovers who want to transition from sweet syrups to pure distillate. New Yarmouth 1994 rarely disappoints. This is a great choice you'll always be happy to return to.

Nose: Chocolate fondue with lots of ester funk. Lots of sweet milk chocolate and tropical ripe guava. Taste: Full body with banana brownie, fine teak wood tannins, and warm fruitcake. Extremely balanced with nice spices – surprisingly smooth and creamy on the palate for 26 years of tropical aging. Finish: Very long, dry, and deep. Noble tropical hardwood remains as a lasting impression. Top 94er N.Y., one of my favorites, of course with its brother(sister)😉.
Review by Fuwi
Excellent NY, behind the first strong, almost bitter impression come slowly typical Jamaican fruits, which can be tickled out even better with a few drops of water and soften the 68% a little, which, however, do not dominate too much.
Review by Solidfunk
Smells like burnt tire, apricot, lemon. Dark golden amber pour. More oak in the mouth. Tangerine. Some burnt tire in the mouth. A little pepper, caramel. A hint of vegetable. Sample shared thanks to xamsx.

Nose: Banana, coconut, diesel, orange peel, black peppercorn, papaya, vanilla, cloves Mouth: Banana, menthol, rubber, slightly medicinal, coconut, anise, cloves, cinnamon, cocoa Finish: Really nice gradual build of flavour and heat that ends in a very lengthy finish For a heavily aged rum, this really holds a lovely character. It carries a nice light funk, some soft fruity character with some stronger aged spices behind it. It drinks well under its proof with quite a soft burn when you consider it is 68.5%. The long finish is also a big plus. While I wouldn't rank this Jamaican style as the most interesting for me, it is a quality sipper and I'm glad to have been able to obtain such a rare piece of rum history. I also really like the fact that it's released in a half bottle format, making it more accessible.

Very good but too indulgent, on flan, pecans, not the profile I prefer.
