Engenhos do Norte 970 Cask Strength Edition (Madeira Brandy Cask) 2016
Most tasters land on "interesting and original" rather than easy — a Madeira agricole where a brandy cask brings grapes, dried fruit and dark chocolate over a grassy, woody, faintly rubbery base. Several call it very complex and a bit heavy, and a couple find it too astringent or bitter to fully love. One reviewer summed it up as an "OVNI" — a genuine oddball.

- Complex and original
- But: Astringent

How does Engenhos do Norte 970 Cask Strength Edition (Madeira Brandy Cask) 2016 taste?
Aggregated from 45 community reviews.
Complex, brandy-cask Madeira agricole Most find this an original, brandy-driven Madeira agricole worth trying — grapes, chocolate, spice. The catch: it's astringent and heavy, and a few say the balance and bitter finish let it down.

Very original, with the wild cane notes typical of Madeira rums, as well as strong Madeira wine notes, but nicely coated with the brandy that brings its yellow fruit and adds a new layer to this singular rum. It's a little disruptive with its different markers, but it works really well!

Sehr spannender Vergleich.

Overall a quite interesting Agricole with lots of burnt rubber in aromas and flavors that’s very different from the Caribbean Agricole’s. This rum, a 970 Madeira Brandy Cask, is produced by Engenhos do Norte in Madeira. It’s a 7yo Brut de Fut distilled in 2016 produced in a total of 3652 numbered bottles.
Review by TheRhumhoe

A rum tasted at Rhum Fest in 2024. The nose is warm, with spices, wood and a hint of dark chocolate. The palate is balanced, with a marked but not overpowering brandy character. Medium finish. A rum in which the integration of the Madeira Brandy barrel is a complete success.

I like it a lot. The brandy finish looks good!

Wood and chocolate.

Very nice rum. color is not something that i have seen before, almost a bit greenish. Definitely a hint of Brandy, and sure packs a punch alcohol wise. Definitely a must try.

Review by Renato Molo
