Engenhos do Norte 970 Cask Strength Edition (Madeira Brandy Cask) 2016
Most tasters land on "interesting and original" rather than easy — a Madeira agricole where a brandy cask brings grapes, dried fruit and dark chocolate over a grassy, woody, faintly rubbery base. Several call it very complex and a bit heavy, and a couple find it too astringent or bitter to fully love. One reviewer summed it up as an "OVNI" — a genuine oddball.

Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Complex, brandy-cask Madeira agricole Most find this an original, brandy-driven Madeira agricole worth trying — grapes, chocolate, spice. The catch: it's astringent and heavy, and a few say the balance and bitter finish let it down.

Overall a quite interesting Agricole with lots of burnt rubber in aromas and flavors that’s very different from the Caribbean Agricole’s. This rum, a 970 Madeira Brandy Cask, is produced by Engenhos do Norte in Madeira. It’s a 7yo Brut de Fut distilled in 2016 produced in a total of 3652 numbered bottles.

Could be a very good rum if it weren't for this brandy finish, I find the brandy here too clearly recognizable. Otherwise still nice, pleasant notes of chocolate, pepper and vanilla, also roasted, spicy and woody.

A rum tasted at Rhum Fest in 2024. The nose is warm, with spices, wood and a hint of dark chocolate. The palate is balanced, with a marked but not overpowering brandy character. Medium finish. A rum in which the integration of the Madeira Brandy barrel is a complete success.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A lovely Madeira rum aged in brandy casks, with a full nose of grape and dried fruit (grape?), aided by oak casks that are sometimes peppery, sometimes spicy, sometimes sweet (vanilla) and sometimes caramelized. The concentration of aromas is quite striking on the nose. The impression continues on the palate: the brandy cask makes its effect felt, offering a very smooth rum with very gourmand flavors (chocolate, candied fruit, sweet spices, grapes, honey). The spicy woodiness comes through with a few roasted notes, but it's the earthy, iodized flavors, which are quite unexpected, that really stand out on the palate. The rum is varied, original and very drinkable. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish, of more limited length due to the sweetness of the juice, is on the same aromatic spectrum: iodine, sugarcane, brandy cask, dried fruit, spices and roasted wood dominate, offering a little less fe spectacle than the rest. A good rum, which even if it is strongly marked by brandy, offers a fine experience of an atypical rum at a very reasonable price.

Very barrel-heavy rum, the interplay of aromas between wood, chocolate, grapes and spices is dry and intense on the palate. The finish is medium-long, warm and sweet. A delicious Engenhos and, considering the availability and price, a real highlight if you like the profile.

It's a very complex rum. For me, it's quite difficult to get into. There's a grape, barrel and grappa base. Another pure juice side with sugar, vanilla and black pepper. And another smoky, barbecued side. You need time to savor it to fully discover and appreciate it.

Degusté at Spirits Days in Tournai, quick notes: One of the UFOs of the day! Nose: brandy, caramel, banana, a hint of sour candy Taste: fruit, lots of spice, a touch of menthol? Finish: spices and a hint of bitterness (but not too much). In short: quite crazy, a little heavy perhaps, but very happy to have finished with this one, which is well worth the detour.

A pure juice that has undoubtedly spent time in a brandy barrel, such is the predominant aroma. Wood, too. The nose is soft and inviting. On the palate, we find the distillery's hallmark: a pure juice with a controlled degree, where the wood is very present and offers a fine structure. Round and grapey. The finish is a little too bitter. Good, but too strong for me.

An interesting Agricole Rum. Considering price-performance it’s quite a good rum. Nose is light, notes of dark chocolate or cocoa, brandy, caramel and mocha. A bit spicy, woody and tar. On the palate quite good taste, sweet, lots of caramel with slight gummy, nice oily consistency. Warm finish but not very long, alcohol is well integrated.

Poured from a bottle that's been open for ~1 year, and is mostly full. Cask-driven rum from Madeira. Heavy brandy influences of grape and apricot, but the distillate holds up decently, giving a good fight with notes of lemon, sugarcane, etc. Overall, this is a good rum and I'm eager to find something more distillate forward.

Great rum, I actually find the brandy that was aged first in the barrel even a bit better. Very exciting comparison.
Review by Madi Dromamad
The mentholated side is not unpleasant and brings an extra freshness to this agricole. You can feel the contribution of the brandy especially on the finish, it's rather indulgent.

There's something that doesn't convince me about this rum. On the nose it's immediately "aggressive" with very astringent notes ranging from leather to oxidized wine. On the palate it is consistent with the nose, but with even more pronounced astringency. I can't say it's not a good rum, but I find it lacks a bit of balance.
Review by Arnaud Faverjon
Very original, with the wild cane notes typical of Madeira rums, as well as strong Madeira wine notes, but nicely coated with the brandy that brings its yellow fruit and adds a new layer to this singular rum. It's a little disruptive with its different markers, but it works really well!

Retasted at GRF2025 Very nice rum. Quality wise. But not my cup of tea. color is not something that i have seen before, almost a bit greenish. Definitely a hint of Brandy, and sure packs a punch alcohol wise. Definitely a must try, to see if it's something for you.

This 970 turned the tennis ball/Sharpie marker note up to 11 and that’s exactly what I want from a Madeira. Perfect example of what rum from the island should be.
