Opinions land mostly warm but rarely wowed: this 1998 Uitvlugt from a Savalle still leans hard into roasted wood and spice, with vanilla, black tea and chocolate underneath. Give it 30 minutes and it opens up. The palate turns dry, smoky and a touch briny, ending on licorice and raisin. A few tasters found the alcohol not quite tucked in.

24.11.2025 Retasting this one while enjoying the fist day of my week off. ------------ #4528 16.12.2023 It's always nice to visit friends and then a few rums are added to the table. This is a pretty ok release. Medium fruity with roasted wood without it being dominant. The palate is nice, warm and lightly spicy with a light smoky note to it. The finish is medium to long with some licorice and raisin. Draws wonderful curtains in the glass. The empty glass has some caramel and light coffee.

The nose of this '98 Uitvlugt is quite restrained at first. After some time (30 minutes) it slowly opens up and aromas of vanilla, black tea, wood and chocolate are perceptible. The woody, spicy aromas predominate on the palate and finish. Overall, the rum is quite strong and demanding.

Wood and vanilla on the nose. There are also earthy and herbal notes present. Black tea with a sip of milk and honey (?) - something in this ballpark at least. Decent complexity with some nuances to discover. Nice. Nicely balanced in the palate. Vanilla Creme and candied spices. Some wood and earthiness plays well with sweetness.

8,4:On the nose, vegetal and woody is the first impression we get, with flowery, grassy-hay, herbaceous molasses, black tea and pencil shavings, roasted wood notes with nuts and chocolate, spicy with vanilla, anise and nutmeg. On aeration, it becomes fruitier with citrus and dried fruits like raisins, apricots and prunes, medicinal with rubber, a toffee complements the notes. 8,1:On the palate, the attack is tasty and dry with roasted wood notes like caramel, chocolate, leather, a bit smoky and spicy with pepper, cinnamon, anise and vanilla, sweet with Demerara sugar and fruity with berries, grapes, dried fruits like raisins, prunes.The molasses is mineral and herbaceous, dark with black tea. 8,2:The finish is long, dry and tannic, less tasty as before, with similar notes, some licorice also pops out. And to finish, a Uitvlugt, which I even like because it doesn't come across as heavily musty. Otherwise we have a lot of wood and a lot of spice, chocolate and vanilla are also recognizable, also very roasted on the palate. Thanks Skyfly for the samples.

A beautifully complex rum with reddish, woody notes and a fine honey sweetness. Very pleasant, but remains somewhat superficial overall. One sample was enough here, wouldn't be worth the price for me.

A rather wood- and spice-heavy rum. Already on the nose these two main players overwhelm you, accompanied by vanilla and black tea. On the palate it tastes pleasantly smoky and on the way to the finish a bit like brine. The finish is dominated again by the wood. The full price probably wouldn't have been worth it for me.

For the price, I expected a little more, but it is a drinkable rum that develops its fruitiness at the beginning with a subtle hint of caramel and ends with a medium-long finish in which you can feel the strength of alcohol along with nuts and wood.

Tasted this at SDR23, so my review remains rather concise. Elegant and light-footed nose starting with blue grapes, caster sugar and a modest amount of wood, slowly evolving into a more spicy approach of aniseed, vanillapod and blueberry tea. Grows more full-bodied on the palate. First opening with the same spicy sweetness as on the nose before transforming in a dry, bakery-style profile with notes of straw, brine, yeast and a touch of accompanying smoke. Ends in more black tea, licorice and an obscene amount of vanilla.

Nose: very woody. There is also some vanilla. Taste: again a lot of wood. Also some roasted notes and a bit of vanilla. Overall I find it quite closed. I still taste a note I can't really assign but it is only faintly perceptible. I don't like it that much (especially for the current price of 200€). There are definitely much better ones. Wouldn't need it again.
