Anise, fennel and licorice hit first — a herbal, almost medicinal streak that makes this Clarendon read unlike most Jamaicans. Behind it sit tropical fruits, lemon and mint, with light roasted notes. Reduced from cask strength to 57.1%, it's fresh and vegetal rather than funky. Most tasters call it fascinating; a few find it too medicinal and sharp on the palate to fully love.

Overall an interesting rum lacking expected funkiness and esters. The nose is fresh, round and fruity with aromas of anise, lemon and mango. At the palate it’s fruity, peppery and minty with flavors of orange and lemon.

A rum tasted online with Angus MacRaild. The color is quite pale. The nose is marked by aniseed and even fennel - strange! But also phenol. The palate is also marked by anise/fennel, but fruit is immediately present. The finish is long and still marked by the decidedly herbaceous sides of this rather strange rum. The empty glass gives fruit and anise/fennel equal billing.

In the approach, the brute aromatics, which the rum on the original strength probably had, is still recognizable - but the targeted reduction to a good 57% results in an exciting alternative to the already existing Clarendon 2007 releases. The aromatics definitely open up new facets and is far from the alcoholic force of the releases with a good ten percent more by volume on the road.

Also a very nice release with really good balance between the elements. Not as elegant as No. 17 but still nice and fruity. There is a lovely freshness to this one and the roasted notes are very light. The empty glass is really nice and I can pick up some chocolate and light minty notes.

Rum Sponge - RumX-live tasting, the fifth and last of the evening. This was significantly diluted from 67% to 57%, but this does not detract from the enjoyment. Nose: interesting, fruity, but at the same time somewhat medicinal, very slightly phenolic. In addition, pronounced vinegar and something fresh, like peppers pickled in vinegar. The fruit tends towards papaya. A slight sweetness of sugar syrup or caramel with aniseed. But somewhat weaker compared to the others... 8.1 Palate: unexpectedly spicy and bacony with lots of aniseed and fatty, sweet tonka bean. Behind this, a very light mint, which is immediately captured by lemon zest. Slightly metallic. 8.3

Wow, the nose starts with eucalyptus and fennel, that's just amazing! Along with lots of fruit and varnish. I like it right away! On the palate, the rum feels balanced and still a bit young. The finish is also very fruity and pleasantly low on wood or bitterness. Very good relatively young Clarendon!

A Clarendon that stands out with an original nose on spices (pepper, anise), aromatic herbs and medicinal notes. It's both fresh and vegetal, with a touch of originality for a Jamaican rum. The fruits and phenols are not far off, but clearly secondary here. The attack on the palate is astringent and powerful. The fruits come first but are quickly erased by a bunch of intense spices, ranging from licorice, pepper, through anise, chili and aromatic herbs. Then medicinal notes, salt notes and umami with a strong woodiness emerge. The alcohol could be better integrated overall. The finish is of good length. It presents warm and spicy, bitter and vegetal flavors. Only after that do fruits and caramel bring a touch of sweetness to this rustic and atypical profile. A strange Clarendon that stands out for its originality but lacks finesse.

A young rum with esters that evokes associations of sour fruits like green apples, pineapple, and citrus. The whole is nicely rounded off by honey, vanilla, and roasted notes, even though the rum doesn't feel mature enough. On the palate, the load of sour fruits overwhelms, with an alcoholic sharpness and a vegetal tea note added, which dominates the finish together with chocolate. Interesting and varied, but not exactly harmonious by my standards.

I find this Clarendon fantastic on the nose - the combination of aniseed and tropical fruit is really great and inviting. On the palate it is much more roasted and also a little too spicy. Fruit is present but could be more.

Not quite a typical Clarendon. For a Clarendon very fruity! Also, lots of spices with licorice, anise and juniper. Also citrus notes. Really exciting!

Exciting Clarendon. With lots of tones from the tdl. Think fresh mint and black tea. The 57.1% fits very well. If you're a fan of Jamaica and tdl, you should definitely try this one. It really hit my taste perfectly.

A good Clarendon that knows how to think outside the box, with a more vegetal profile and fruit in the background. Very nice. After all, I prefer its 2007 counterpart from the antipodes collection.

A peculiar one. Anise and herbs on the nose. On palate vegetal, green apples, herbs, then spiciness that when softens becomes touch fragrant.

Wow, so the nose is very candy-like, marzipan or something like that. The taste is strongly chemical, menthol. In the finish, menthol and a candy stick. At the very end, it reminds me of Chairman Masters. Another sniff and sip feel much better. First impression not great, but in the end, a successful, more demanding piece.
