Review by Volkmar Weber
Secret Flor de Caña. Those looking for a 'smooth' rum should check out this special single cask bottling from Faultline in Nicaragua. This beauty comes from the distillery in Nicaragua that is widely regarded as the best Spanish-style distillery outside of Cuba. Flor de Caña. In fact, many have speculated that this distillery is responsible for much of the expansion of Cuban rum exports, as the style is very similar and has seen unprecedented growth in the category. On the nose there is toffee, caramel, sweet earth, hints of barnyard and burning wood. After some time, aromas of coffee and darker smoke are added. The palate remains phenolic, with a good amount of funk to balance the elegant, sweet, dark flavors. A smooth but very complex sipping rum. According to the bottler K&L Wine (San Francisco), the rum is neither colored nor sweetened.
