Raisins, dark spice and a thick layer of PX sherry hit first — so thick that several tasters say it buries the rum underneath. Dig past it and there's ripe fruit, virgin-oak wood and a grassy, almost agricole edge from this young Ghanaian pot still. #4719 04.05.2024 Had a nice exclusive tasting at Romdeluxe with our little rum group. Nose Intense, dried fruit, light citrus, ester, light smoke, grass. Palate Warm, round, wood, light marzipan, fruity, dried fruit, naturally sweet, faint smoke, spicy. Finish Long and warm, light wood, dried fruit, light citrus, light grass, faint floral.

I will add a rating with points after the samples from the split are distributed. Edit: all in all a nice profile, but in my opinion still a bit too unripe. In hindsight, I also find the price a bit too high. But that's what you know from Romdeluxe.

For me, a rum not yet fully matured with strong sherry cask influence. I still find the profile interesting and look forward to more rums from Ghana, preferably unaged and with neutral casks.

Sherry lovers get their money's worth here. Unfortunately, the rum is mostly overshadowed by it. The alcohol could also be better integrated. Other bottlings are better balanced.

This rum really divides opinions - so if anyone has a bottle they don't like and wants to get rid of it, I'll gladly sacrifice myself - this thing is amazing! Actually, I find it has a totally extraordinary flavor profile. This mix of Virgin Oak and PX Sherry (from my sensory analysis, I think they coated the barrel with very thick sherry syrup, which also ended up in the final product) gives this rum a depth and intensity that it shouldn't have for its young age. The most unusual thing here is the rosewood note, like cutting fresh grenadilla or rosewood. A certain herbaceousness, pepper, and some tart grape acidity and quite sweet - and somewhere there's also an agricole note, but not an old aged one, rather a young, fresh grassy one, which provides an exciting counterpoint to the wood, raisins, and a hint of tobacco. I really like it a lot.

The nose is actually promising... but even here the alcohol is clearly noticeable... and on the palate... unfortunately it overpowers the subtly perceptible diverse fruit and spice aromas, a pity... It definitely has potential.

An "exciting" bottling. Unlike many bottlings from Ghana, the crass esters do not immediately predominate here, which leaves me a bit surprised at first. After the initial astonishment, however, I then discover a hint of it behind a good layer of spice, raisins and other dark notes. There must have been a lot of sherry in the ex-sherry cask here, which strictly speaking is no longer a finish, but a thick one. There is little of the original rum to be discovered, only when you have penetrated the "comforting" layer of sherry do you find something reminiscent of Nanny 2, Cudjoe or the Honeybadger. Especially late on the palate and in the finish, tangy fruity notes come through, but they can easily be mistaken for a pungent alcohol sharpness. Excitingly, a hint of ester remains, especially long after swallowing. Blindly, I might have even put this rum after Madeira, as the combination of the esters with the sherry also provides a grassy, slightly agricolic note. Somehow exciting, but still clearly too much finish for me.

The 67.1% first hit hard, but are still well integrated and cause a small explosion on the tongue. Then pleasantly dark aromas unfold, it slowly gets sweeter and you can enjoy it on the tongue for a long time. With a little water it becomes directly more floral and even rounder, more fruity but not as intrusive ester-heavy as perhaps some Jamaican representatives. I like it very much!

Well, I'm not a big fan of sherry finishes anyway, but here it clearly also covers the nice fruity profile of the rum. So from my point of view, the experiment was not successful.
