Distillery visit Trois Frères Distillery November 2025. A typical spiced rum. Definitely very spicy, especially vanilla and cinnamon here, but also caramel and a bit of honey.

A friend brought it from the distillery. Not my thing at all, intense spiced nose, unpleasant orange peel. Less sweet on the palate than expected, but sharp and unpleasant. Can't exactly describe it but it's weird.

A visit to the Takamaka distillery is worth it! During the pandemic, besides their high-quality pot still from fresh sugarcane juice from the Seychelles in very small quantities, they built a second pillar with a triple column still that works with molasses from abroad (Mauritius). This allows continuous large-scale production, serving the cocktail and beginner segment. The triple distillation produces a very neutral rum, which is afterwards flavored (e.g. fruit essences, cinnamon, vanilla, sometimes also coloring and sugar). This rum was heavily spiced and almost has a wintery feeling. The new segment helps the distillery financially, but it does not produce a quality rum.

Well, no lie, they really improved the strength and recipe compared to the original 38% version and went up to 43%. The aroma is slightly sweet with vanilla, honey, spices up to orange peel and clove. Surprisingly, the sweetness from the aroma does not show in the taste, the finish is shorter, sharp, warming. It reminds me a lot of Chamarel Mauritius spiced, but that one is a bit more refined as a spiced rum, otherwise a great effort for mixers, and the price-performance ratio is easygoing.
