Not your usual cane-juice rum: this Chalong Bay comes off herbal and floral with a distinct cognac note, apricot and tropical fruit underneath, then a peppery, earthy, almost meaty edge. Reviews split hard — one taster calls it a bottle "for people who dont like standard," while others found it vegetal, watery and oddly perfumed. A 56.1% pot-still oddity from Thailand.

There aren't many cask strength releases from Chalong Bay currently. All that I've tried so far convinced me. Unfortunately, this one completely falls short. Planty, herbal, alcoholic and watery on the palate. Chalong Bay can do better.

I don't know what potting soil tastes like, but that's how I imagine it 🤣 unfortunately not my cup of tea at all... strangely floral, perfumed and at the same time meaty and umami. Like a caraway roll with cologne water and musty potted plants. Also strangely acidic and alcoholic. Not fun at all, sorry😅
