Flensburg Rum Company Thailand (Special Bottling for 12th German Rumfest)

Chocolate, coconut and caramel with ripe banana — several tasters called it "banana split to drink" and swore blind it was a Foursquare, not Thailand. The nose is the highlight: oak, vanilla, roasted spice. On the palate it turns hot and rough at 60.3%, with pepper, bitterness and unintegrated alcohol. A drop of water and some air tame it noticeably.

The community says
  • Beautiful, layered nose

Five months ago, after tasting a sample of RX15460, I wrote: "I assume that Thai aged rum is on the rise and that we can still expect a lot from the country." Today I can only confirm this: What a great, mysterious rum, what a positive surprise! Since nothing is known about the rum apart from the country of origin, I can happily and gratefully speculate on the basis of my perception: The rum seems very old to me, more like 24 than 12 years. On the nose and palate, I clearly perceive ripe cherries and heavy, rather sweet red wine - perhaps it has matured for 24 years in a Thai red wine barrel? 😉 As I said, just imaginative speculation. But the fact is: this is a rum that also meets the expectations of advanced rum drinkers. Try it! But beware: there were only 72 bottles ... Unique. Update 2024-10-19: Unusual experiment: mysterious RX16506 vs. renowned RX18937 😳 Why? Because I tasted the RX16506 the day before yesterday with Berlin rum friends and we agreed that the rum could have been a Foursquare blind. So I thought I'd compare it with a real Foursquare 😉. Well, and what can I say: The Thai one is excellent! It's even more present on the nose than the Foursquare. On the palate, it really comes down to the form of the day or personal preference: the Thailänder is strong and spicy with lots of chocolate, while the Absolutio impresses with its smoothness and fine port influence. For today I would say: a draw, both 87 points - bämm! And no, unfortunately I have nothing left of the Thailander. 🤷🏽‍♂️😉

Very surprising. Blindly, I would have guessed Foursquare. Lots of wood, chocolate, coffee and some plum. Has lots of bitter notes and seems to have been in the barrel for a very long time.

The FRC with the Tuk-Tuk on the cover was the first Thai rum that made you want more stuff from Thailand. At four years old, it's also the youngest, which you don't notice at all. Very balanced easy sipper. In comparison, the LMWD is a bit wilder and more demanding. The Rumporter convinces me the most today. The finish is sweet but fits the profile overall and gives it a woody fruit note. The aromas are all very similar: vanilla, coconut, chocolate, tobacco and sweet red fruits. Three exotics that all know how to convince! Hope more will come to the rum shelves soon. But with these three, you absolutely can't go wrong. 8.3 / 8.2 / 8.5

Interessantes Destillat und bin gespannt was hier zukünftig noch abgefüllt wird. Geht Richtung Foursquare und Thailand hätte ich nie erraten. Viel Holz, Karamell, Schokolade und Vanille mit etwas Frucht.

Update: I have now opened my bottle and tasted it again. Yes, the nose is really wonderful and makes this rum. A fine column profile with lots of oak, vanilla, caramel, coconut and banana. The palate is no longer so round but rather sharp and rough with a pronounced bitter note. But all in all very good. I go up to 8.2. Nose alone would be a very high 8. Palate a medium 7. Nice column rum with wood, caramel, vanilla, spice and also some coconut and banana. Still a little sharp and impetuous on the palate, but great for the price.

Tasted at the 12th GRF Good rum, but I was expecting something exotic. Instead, you get a well-balanced rum here.

Edit: I like it much better as a mixer than pure. Can be used both in the MaiTai and as a CubaLibre I was actually expecting more funk and something a bit more unusual. It's still pretty wild and boisterous. This was another one where I tried to experiment a little with adding extra water. I have to admit that it is a lot more pleasing and becomes a solid, tasty sipper. This time there's an extra point after the decimal point for the funny label and the unusual idea.

I'm a bit confused? That's supposed to be Thailand? Would I immediately put it blindly in the direction of Barbados foursquare or possibly Venezuela? Lots of chocolate, coconut and banana caramel, quasi banana split to drink. Overall very tasty but I don't quite understand the product😆 The alcohol is also surprisingly well integrated! And probably the coolest label in a long time, the tuktuk is mega😆🛺! I'd love a bottle of that! Probably my Thailand reference so far, even if I would never have blindly put it in Thailand! 😆🛺🇹🇭

Reminds a bit of Foursquare (Light). But a definitely tasty rum. Update... too one-dimensional, even though the wood and marzipan note keep the rum alive. Not a daily sipper for me anymore. Occasionally enough :-)

Mainly coconut on the nose with a note of slightly burnt wood. I would have immediately assigned it to Barbados. Along with ripe bananas and plenty of pecans. Taste-wise also towards Barbados, especially Foursquare. Great intensity, the alcohol could be a bit better integrated. Otherwise a relaxed rum, but it doesn't bring a new profile. Still tasty, with an elegant sweetness.

A Thai rum of the strong and spicy kind with surprising moments. On the nose, it initially reminds me of a Belize with lots of vanilla/coconut aromas. With longer time, a distinct cinnamon and glue note emerges. On the palate, there is first a heavy caramelized sweetness, followed by some coconut and chocolate. Then the spices hit quite strongly. Again, a bit of glue here. The finish stays on the spicy/woody side but is relatively short. A pleasing bottling.

Exciting profile with many classic notes around oak wood, caramel, and vanilla, which get a present fruity counterpart. On the palate still a bit sharp, but apart from that an absolutely serious new face in the rum world.

#5234 14.04.2025 running some samples at home while listening to some Goa Psy Trance. Nose Fresh, light wood, faint smoke, light coconut, light citrus, spice, faint caramel. Palate Medium spicy, fresh, light wood, coconut, light citrus, light chocolate, prunes. Finish Medium to long, medium spicy, fresh, light wood, light chocolate, light prunes, light coconut. Empty glass Coconut, prunes, spice, light caramel, chocolate. Surprisingly good rum especially when looking at the price tag.

A Thai rum that seems older than most profiles offered in this terroir. The nose can easily be mistaken for a Foursquare, you find the opulent fruitiness of coconut and banana, the lively side of toasted and spicy oak but also the indulgence of chocolate, vanilla, caramel and nuts. A pleasant profile, classic in terms of aroma but surprising for the terroir. The attack on the palate is powerful, lively on spices (chili, vanilla, pepper) and roasted oak. The dried fruits (prune and raisin) accentuate the dry side on the palate. Despite this strength, the profile remains indulgent like the bajan style with tropical fruits (coconut, banana), chocolate and caramel. The alcohol could be better integrated, the profile is a bit spicy and wild despite everything. The finish is of correct length but not the most intense. The sweet side stands out a bit more as well as the spices which are just as dominant. Licorice and chocolate give a bit more bitterness, balanced by dried fruits (raisin) and tropical fruits (banana and coconut). An interesting rum to discover another facet of Thailand but which still requires some adjustments to claim the top spots.

My best Thai so far. Surprisingly complex on the nose with vanilla, coconut, caramel, dried fruits, wood, roasted and spice aromas. On the palate very similar aromas, but the alcohol brings an unpleasant sharpness that is still felt after the finish.

On the nose somewhere between the 'classic' Spaniard and Foursquare, a decent portion of caramel, barrel, banana, coconut, plus slightly sour notes. On the palate spices, barrel, a bit bitter on the finish. Overall a positive surprise.

After some time I am finally able to taste that mysterious Thailand bottling after Gunnar has snatched the last bottle from Rum Depot five minutes before my arrival. But fair enough, I got a sample :D And I have to say what a shame it is already gone. A great surprisingly complex Rum with lot of spices, just the right degree of sweetness and a very big créme brûlée. Oh and it needs a few drops of water.

Tasted at the 12th GRF in Berlin: Very surprising and in a positive way. Clearly different from the bottling by S.B.S, although I am more convinced by that one. Exciting profile that for me has hints of a Spanish style, but with more edges and thus more exciting.

My first Thai rum and I'm pleasantly surprised. Nice fruity gentle smell. On the palate it gets a bit spicier. The finish is relatively long and the cask comes through a bit. I like it very much, but the alcohol could be better integrated. There's room for improvement.

In short, on the nose first very promising, very inviting with tropical fruits, slight caramelized tones, some citrus, wood, and chocolate. On the palate then very strong, less fruit, more wood, very sharp on the tongue, chocolate, spicy, peppery, slight allspice towards the finish.

Frankonian Tasting Gang - 21.03.2025 - Nuremberg: I already found it surprisingly delicious at the Rum Festival in Berlin and the good impression was confirmed today. The nose is the strongest side of the rum. Roasty, with caramel, banana and coconut. On the palate then a bit rough, the alcohol could be better integrated. Maybe a little more time in the barrel to smooth the edges? Overall very successful!

I've been traveling Thailand for a long time and know the local rum "specialties" from some nights... But this (thank God) has nothing to do with that. I don't really understand where the "Thailand" label comes from. Apart from that, it's quite sharp on the nose, very rough on the palate, woody and peppery. Also fermented fruits, but unfortunately for me a relatively unpleasant sharpness predominates, which with a few drops of water becomes even more peppery, more like chili. But a very exciting rum that gives the connoisseur quite a workout on the tongue and thus is fun again.
