Almost everyone agrees the base Panama column rum is a bit plain on its own — the two-month red-wine cask finish is what makes this batch worth talking about. It pours a strange reddish-brown and tastes of ripe grapes, vanilla sugar, burnt sugar and a dry, faintly peppery edge. A couple of tasters wish the wine didn't dominate quite so much, but at 54% the alcohol stays well tucked in.

The color in the glass is amazingly reddish-brown. On the palate, the red wine cask clearly dominates, but you can still recognize the base spirit from Panama. The alcohol is well integrated. Really fun! I thankfully got a sample of the base spirit. Even more amazing is that the finish of only 2 months shows such an effect. I find the base spirit rather one-dimensional, the alcohol is not well integrated...

Edit: Tasted again with an open mind. Great project, I stick with that. But the finish is just too dominant for me. Unfortunately, the base material gets a bit lost. Therefore, unfortunately corrected downwards. First of all, utmost respect to Jarek and Flo1977. Thanks for letting me try this as one of the first. The rating was made together with my wife. Since I am slightly under the weather, my taste might have misinterpreted a bit. So the first nose was red wine, brandy, grape and a hint of disinfectant and barrel. Taste dominated by red wine, dry, slight sharpness (black pepper), salty, woody, barrel, sour and a bit astringent, yet soft, round, but drinkable. Alcohol well integrated. In the finish I tasted a sweet apple again. The longer it rests in the glass, the more sour it becomes. My rating is not necessarily objective, as both belong to the Nuremberg/Herzogenaurach community. So please forgive me. There are simply bonus points for the courage alone to build such a project and bring it to fruition. And that on the side in free time.

Wow, what a great project! I was allowed to test the raw material in direct comparison to the final product and I am thrilled! The 10yo from Sebastian Lauinger is already very balanced, as you know from him. But the finish in the red wine cask takes it to another level. Sweet, but not unpleasantly sugary, rather like ripe wine grapes that give the distillate a big punch on the tongue and palate. What I did not expect at all is the influence regarding the "agreeableness" on the tongue. It feels rounder, nicer, even more pleasant than the original product anyway. I take my hat off and am curious how the two will continue!

Great barrel experiment from the Franconian Tasting Gang circle - the Panama profile is flanked by intense notes of vanilla sugar, burnt sugar and marshmallows - not clumsily sweet, but exciting. Crazy that this results from a red wine barrel!
