04.08.2025 Restasting this nice release and I still like it a lot actually. -------------------- #5082 Saturday 24.01.2025 - 26.01.2025 A nice weekend in my sisters summerhouse with old friends and colleagues tasting a lot of rums. I can only recommend like we did, no phones allowed and then only music in the background 😊 Colour Dark to very dark in colour. Nose Fresh, medium intense, wood, light medicinal, light vegetal, light caramel, light cherry, faint citrus. Palate Round, oily, medium intense, balanced, light vegetal, faint medicinal, light caramel, light cherry, faint pineapple, medium dry. Finish Long and warm, balanced, oily, spice, wood, fruits, light citrus, faint chocolate, medium dry. Empty glass Fresh, vegetal, light citrus, light caramel, vanilla, light chocolate.

I just do not like the taste of unshared cask. It is definitely different than my beloved Grand arome/HERR. Rumy z destilerie Savanna jsou jedny z mych nejoblibenejsich. Shows fermented fruits, esters and a slightly spicy herbal note on the nose, complemented by citrus zest. On the palate strong, with typical Savanna signature, but without special surprises. The alcohol brings power but feels somewhat edgy in places. The finish is medium-long, fruity and spicy. Overall a solid bottling that reflects the style well but doesn't stand out.

Juicy rums from the savannah have the advantage that they are very interesting even for people who don't seek out juicy rums. Here is a beautiful example of a perfect juicy rum, which is at the top of production, excluding grand arôme rums.

Tasting a 3cl sample. 👃 The double tropical aging in Cognac cask (7 years) and Calvados cask (3 years) is very distinctive. The nose quite far from the glass, it gives off a smell of fruit tree blossoms from the orchard. The heart of the aromas is found on one side with candied fruits (marasquin cherry) and dried fruits (raisins) and on the other side with dehydrated citrus and caramelized apples. Actually, I have the image of the old slightly rusty press of grandpa that we used to operate in autumn to make cider with the overripe apples fallen from the tree... It's quite alcoholic and lively on green pepper. It's vegetal and herbal on notes of dried leaves, green tea, light mint and conifer sap. The wood is quite spicy and rustic. A nose that favors the cask at the expense of the more classic markers of savannah molasses. 😋 We find the same fruits as on the nose, more candied and alcoholic. Raisins, orangettes, caramelized apples, cherries in brandy. The wood is more pronounced, quite harsh and bitter. Not unpleasant though, but it's a divisive profile. It's still herbal and vegetal on all kinds of green and black tea, dead leaves, a slightly earthy side. Very dark chocolate too, a bit of cinnamon and a more manufactured characteristic on saddle leather. Really a pity the alcohol integration is not optimized (it deserved a little reduction). ⛳ Medium length, warm, bitter and spicy. Alcohol still present, 99% dark chocolate, Christmas spices (cinnamon, candied ginger, mild chili). A bit of fruitiness on some small sweet citrus dices that stick to the palate as well as wild black berries. A UC defined by balanced aromas from nose to finish but once again, the alcohol too present "old style" (like old artisanal eaux-de-vie) may put some off. A traditional rum that's not easy to tame. Between 82 and 84/100.

Woody, caramelized, metallic nose. I didn't smell the green apple or calvados that others mention. On the palate, alcohol is present but not well integrated. This time, a marked impression of Calvados. It's quite faithful to the old Savanna profile I've tasted.

Reunion! A travelers dream. Amazing wild life and endemic species. I like the theme of the bottle design. Beautiful sea turtle. Do I like the rhum? I do. But it’s not easy to like it. The alcohol is too dominant, the bitterness of the cask slightly too present. But it’s complex and the calavados / apple flavors are quite unique. Regrettably, the strong abv kills a bit the joy. But hey, a nice rhum, don’t get me wrong. But not easy to like.

Tasting face-to-face last night with another Savanna Unshared: the Germany Murène. Two very different rums, and it’s the Murène that wins. This Tortue offers a frank attack in the mouth. It leans clearly towards the woody side, accompanied by fruity notes. I found it less complex than the Murène. Quite oily, it has a rather dark color.

On the nose clearly the passage in Calvados cask is present. There is also the woody side, notes of candied and red fruits. You can feel it will be powerful as well, the raw cask side is easily guessed. The attack is powerful, you feel the watts but without too much aggressiveness either. The Calvados side is marked, the red fruits are present, the sugar cane as well, a vegetal side and the wood. The length is beautiful, stretches out leaving a taste of red fruits, wood and Calvados. A rather complex rum but it delivers what it promises on the nose. Don't hesitate to give it some airing time to develop its aromatic side and make it a bit less powerful.

A quite nice agri Savanna, a bit marked by calvados on first nose and palate but that fades after opening to return to a more classic frame. It's quite complex and indulgent, besides the fruits (apple, pear, yellow peach all quite green) there's an enchanting praline on the nose that balances these under-ripe fruits. You find roughly the same in the mouth, the texture isn't incredible (almost no chew), and there's still a strong bitterness that increases with each sip... that somewhat spoils the pleasure... A shame for this bitterness, the nose is very nice.

Jesus, this is good! Beautiful taste of calvados and cognac. Apples, fullness, beautiful full finish. I want to drink this all evening. Alcohol just right for a full finish where calvados recedes and a lot of cognac remains in the mouth. Oh, and the smell is maybe even better.

I better understand the many criticisms regarding the calvados cask that dominates way too much. Nose: calvados (apple), woody, a bit metallic/medicinal Mouth: calvados, fruity, a bit of spices and caramel Finish: long with still calvados, woody and fruits This will certainly please calvados lovers, personally it's not really my thing.
