People already into Hampden will get this one: a continentally-aged 1998 HLCF at cask strength, with the usual esters, pineapple and citrus-marmalade, plus roasted wood, glue and a briny olive edge. 09.05.2016 Evening out with colleagues and good rums. Notes Light in colour. Nose Wood, light roasted, light glue, fruity, ester, banana, overripe, light floral. Palate Oily, warm, ester, light medicinal, fruity, citrus, naturally sweet, faint floral, light chocolate. Finish Long and warm, oily, medium dry, fruity, wood, olive.

initially a strange note, which I locate somewhere between fennel and alkali. But this fortunately dissipates quite quickly. Then come the usual HLCF notes like fermented fruit, citrus jam, pineapple, pastry. On the palate, citrus, barrel and a salty finish. Overall decent, but it is also already missing a good bit to the excellent 92s HLCFs of Nobilis or RumClub (Ed. 18).

8,6:On the nose, glue, esters, funky, rubber, overripe tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, fermented, red and citrus fruits, briny olive, roasted wood notes like cocoa, pastry, caramel, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, allspice is out, burnt hints, roasted nuts, berries and flowery molasses. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is intense, funky with esters, iodine, fermented tropical, citrus and red fruits, later berries, flowery molasses with briny olive, roasted wood notes like caramel, oily, creamy, spicy with allspice, burnt, smoky with bacon, rubber. 8,6:The finish is long, dry and tannic, creamy, with burnt, smoky roasted wood notes, rubber, phenol, pairing tropical, red and dried fruits, flowery, grassy, herbaceous molasses, briny.

Now for a change a lower Hampden Mark. These somewhat gentler esters are also not bad. For the price at the time a real bargain. The quality/complexity really convinces for the price.

For me overall a very unusual Hampden profile. Both on the nose and palate, a note (maybe cherry yogurt!?) stands out that I can't quite place. Overall a tasty Hampden, but it doesn't fully convince me.

Verdict: given the age, I find this not so convincing. It's not as intense as fully tropically aged versions. Although it has complexity, there is not sufficient balance as it is a bit pepper-driven. 81 points Nose: quite some cake dough, cream, aniseed bit if sugar, mild esters, pineapple. A bit of wood and pencil shavings. Palate: pineapple milkshake, crea and custard, pencil shavings, pepper, baking spice. Finish: long, a bit peppery, on pineapple, glue, pencil shavings, molasses, baking spice.

Hampden with a few strange notes. On the nose is pretty typical HLCF profile, and even a bit bold as the tropical ageing usually are. Esters, ananas and maybe even a cheery note both on the nose and when drinking. Drink side, this rum adds annoiky body and a iodine trait really noticeable when close to the end

A 1998 HLCF from The Rum Cask. As always, continental-aged Hampden quality. Alcohol is very well integrated. Citrus fruits, cask notes, esters, marzipan. You can't go wrong with this bottling.

In direct comparison with 5 other Hampdens for me the weakest. Very good alcohol integration, but the profile is a bit odd, with less pineapple/fruit, instead a somewhat peculiar note of bitter almond. Not my profile.

very fruity and balanced on the nose. On the palate the wood dominates the fruits, very dry and a bit saulty. A very smooth hint of esters on both palate and nose.

OMG, the taste! It is not standard Hampden, I would bet it is mixed with old Rockley. There is taste of fresh nuts or appel seeds or what is that...Wow!
