The 2023 Master Blender’s Reserve from Black Tot is very complex and aromatic. It’s a blend of rum from Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad, Jamaica and a very old one from Grenada. The nose is spicy and fruity with aromas of tar, black pepper, cocoa, pears, figs peaches and some licorice. At the palate there are flavors of cocoa, dark chocolate, tar, tobacco, licorice, smoke and dried fruit. The finish is rather long with the flavors from the palate remaining.

The nose seems quite Spanish and sweetish, taste then but very dry, bitter and especially on the Guyana wooden Versailles style side and a lot worthy Park ... Overall, it is a bit too bitter and woody for me, also the alcohol could be much better integrated ... Simply not harmonious.

Another step backwards compared to the 2021 bottling. A little better than the 2022, but unfortunately not outstanding either. Edit: Tasted again at leisure. Quite pleasant neat. Now also tried as a mixer in the CubaLibre, where I find it even better. Franconian Tasting Gang goes Tiki Better than the 2022

On the nose, delicious sweet notes. Cocoa, coffee, and warm, woody notes. Something sweet is also present. On the palate, primarily chocolate, coffee, spices, and light fruity notes. Sweetness of caramel. A bit barrel and woody. More dried fruity notes, leather, and vanilla. The finish is medium to long. Remains pleasantly warm in the mouth for a long time with the cocoa flavor.

A very nice Navy style and not much more. I really enjoyed the original 50th anniversary blend (which I still have 2 bottles of 😀) and my memory tells me this doesn't quite come up to that standard. Still a good rum though, quite woody, slightly bitter, with spices and dark chocolates. Shortish finish

8,7:On the nose, dark molasses with licorice, flowery, citrus and dried fruits like raisins, barrel finish impact is obvious, toasted wood notes like caramel, leather, nuts, vanilla, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, banana, cherry and dried apricots arise, round, molasses is dark with black tea, chocolate, slightly smoky, spicy, resinous notes join, metallic patina, a bit dirty touch. 8,6:On the palate, the attack is a bit metallic, fruity with dried fruits like raisins and apricots, prunes, citrus, tropical fruits like banana, sweet with toasted wood notes like caramel, chocolate, coffee, leather, roasted nuts, walnuts, spicy with vanilla, anise, salty, molasses is vegetal, slightly bitter. 8,7:The finish is medium long, dry&tannic, slightly dirty, medicinal, the wood is charred/toasted with chocolate, aramel, cocoa, leather, buttery, spicy, nutty, fruity with dried fruits, molasses is thick, dark with black tea. Delicious Black ToT. In direct conparsion to the 2002 and the 2004 version, this one falls short! This one lacks in complexity and it‘s more on the „boring“ (unspectacular, seems to be just another Black ToT…). The alcohol is integrated well!

I like it better than the 2022, rounder and better integrated. Great balance of roasted notes, wood influence & dark fruits. Quite a long, dry finish with coconut, leather and chocolate that offers a nice conclusion.

I really like these profiles full of leather, bitterness brought by coffee or mocha. You find all this in this rum, with discreet fruitiness and woodiness. Alcohol is a bit too present. Interesting length. Edit: tasted again today and still charmed by this blend with a little earthy and dark side behind a Barbadian indulgence. Nice.

Exciting Black Tot bottling, for me not better than the 2022. On the palate more Guyana, some bitterness and well-integrated alcohol. Lacks some complexity and the special something – still a rum you can enjoy.

Yeah, this rum is quite okay, but not top class. We get a fairly dark rum here, with roastiness and wood standing out, but also chocolate, coffee, caramel, vanilla, and leather.

Will Guyana's 31.5% dominate the rest? I can't say. This cuvée presented a few notes that I don't like as much, such as a very present bitterness, tannins that are too pronounced too, I think, and which crush a little on the finish. Tasting notes: Nose: not quite ripe peach, fruity, blood orange (yum, delicious), and woody. Palate: coffee and dark chocolate take over at first, but are overtaken by that not-quite-ripe peach, which is a little less sexy. Finish: coffee, dark chocolate, pleasant woody notes in the foreground, unfortunately replaced by a bitterness and tannins that are less to my taste, and which linger a little too long on the palate. I'd like to say that all the ingredients were present for an excellent moment, but the overwhelming finish cut me off a little. Without it being a failure, or bad, this bitterness and these tannins upset my opinion a little. NB: I'd encountered these notes before in older Guyana rums (20-30 years), and they'd already left me with this memory. I guess it's just not my style.

A new interesting Black Tot bottling. I personally like it better than the 2022. In the taste clearly more Guyana, some bitterness and a very good integration of the alcohol. I lack a bit of complexity and the special to the rum. Nevertheless, you can have his pleasure with him.

Tasted in direct comparison with the Black Tot 2021. For me, the TDL notes are more dominant in the 2021. The 2023 seems a little fresher and unfortunately there are also musty notes. For me, the 2021 has the edge!

This rum requires you to enjoy it solo (I.e. not in a flight of rums) To me it’s beautifully nuanced, delicate and elegant - perhaps a little fragile if in a line up like what I’ve tried this sample in! So far however the main takeaway that all the notes I’ve tagged on this app telling me how it all tastes, all of them feel “cohesively blended” so kudos to Elixir Distillers for blending this one together! All things considered it’s a really good rum and goes a little way of justifying its price tag more so than other Navy/style Blends I would score it higher however the price does come into my decision a little - circa £140-£150 in the UK so I’d have to be really sure on it Feels slightly overpriced BUT if you bought this on recommendation alone could confidently say you’ve bought a great rum you will enjoy no problem!

08.03.2024 Tasting with Romhatten. Retasting and I still like it a lot. --------------- #4281 06.10.2023 finally got the new one and tasting 2021 - 2022 - 2023 side by side. This one is really close to the 50th Anniversary release. Medium intense profile with well integrated wood. The nose is well rounded, the palate nicely balanced with a perfume touch. The finish is medium to long and dry. I like the light medicinal note in the profile. Draws really nice curtains in the glass. The empty glass has light varnish, chocolate and faint leather notes.

The nose is clearly woodier and toastier than I remember from the previous bottlings. In the mouth, however, I like it much better. It is much fruitier and more multi-faceted here. As always with Black Tot, a successful blend, but I remember its predecessors as being somewhat better

Less fruity than the 2021, a little stronger than the 2022 and overall much more on the dark side. I liked it from the very first sip in Berlin. And it's so incredibly worth leaving the glass for a while.

In fact, more beautiful Guyana notes on the nose than in the 2022. Then on the palate, unfortunately, somehow inharmonious. And funny, somehow intangible notes that bother me. As if a few very short aged components don't blend in properly. Zumindedt not as nice as in the nose, which I like very much.

I was pretty curious, because i loved the 2021 edition. It is very similar, but still different. I found the smell a bit too woody and lacks some extra details. The taste is similar, it’s a very good rum, nicely blended, but I find it not so complex as the 2021 edition.

I tasted side by side the 2022, 23 and 24. My preference goes to the 23 for its complexity a bit more felt than in the 22. Besides the classic framework of woody roasted chocolate, I found notes of orange and spices like nutmeg.

Here a very tasty Black Tot from 2023. Already smells very leathery and a bit like glue. But also tropical fruits like pineapple and mango are easy to recognize. I like it very much and recommend it.

I didn't taste this rum in comparison with other BLACK TOT vintages but rather against the two Velier reference bottlings RX26 and RX183. The color is very similar among all three Navy rum representatives, only the Tiger Shark is a bit deeper in color. All show an appealing golden brown. The nose here is initially very restrained. However, I also opened the bottle fresh, and the rum definitely benefits from a few minutes in the glass. Over time, a balanced aroma develops with light wood, mild spice, slight fruitiness, and some caramel or sweet notes. On the palate, more or less the same picture. Also in the medium-long finish, still the cask notes together with fruit and spice. However, with a not too strong but noticeable bitterness at the end. Conclusion: Of the three Navys tasted, the weakest, but still at a pleasing level. Some might find it boring, others appreciate the harmonious blending. In any case, I do not regret having a bottle on the shelf.

Tasted at UK RumFest. Strong Guyanan influence comes through which I really enjoy. I thought it was a well balanced navy rum and actually one of my highlights for the RumFest, particularly as, though it isn’t cheap, it isn’t so expensive that I’d feel frivolous opening and enjoying a bottle.

Perhaps the most challenging one regarding the rest of MBR releases. It is bold, woody, spicy and punchy, but on the other hand most Guyanese. It’s second, after 50th anniversary, my favourite release, nevertheless the best MBR for me so far (2021-2024). I appreciate the uniqueness of wood in this particular edition.

The nose I don’t really like, it reminds of overripe fruits but not in a good estery way. The taste is great, really complex and balanced with good integrated alcohol. The finish is sweet with some spices and a slight bitterness. Overall a nice drop but I am not sure if it’s worth the price. Edit: Looking at my notes I preferred the previous bottlings a little bit.

I liked on the GRF clearly better than the 2022. At home I am such after the third tasting somehow disappointed. Unfortunately, have no direct comparison. The rum does a lot right and is nicely balanced and shows beautiful barrel aromas. But somehow also unspectacular than expected. Easy sipping.

A bit weaker black tot than the previous 2022 and 2021 versions. Those were more technical. This one is sweeter, fruitier like cherry or some other sweet summer fruit. But for the price of 4000 it's just not worth it...
