Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Exquisite 94 Caroni. Classic profile with decent dirt, but balanced sweetness, wood, spice, coffee, licorice and mineral notes. The Hangar series is definitely top notch Caroni.

15.11.2025 Enjoying a few old samples while I am cleaning up my rum cabinets. Breaking a sweat over this actually. ------------- This one is like a hammer if you don't let it rest. I found it to be best after 45 minuts of rest after which the ABV stops biting into the flavours. The nose is alcoholic of not rested, light wood with rubber, tar, apple, licorice and light floral notes. The palate is also alcoholic if not rested with wood, rubber, tar trailed by vanilla, leather, licorice and light caramel and earthy notes. The finish is long is woody with spice, caramel and light leather. As I mentioned, this rum really needs to rest in order to release all flavours and settle on the ABV.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory rum, which was added at a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.

Stands out clearly even after the whole Paradise series. Wonderful bottling and a great representative of the 1994 series. Hangar series is overall very exquisite. Typical Caroni...dirty notes. Nevertheless balanced and complex.

A complex, warm nose with apple juice, pineapple and other tropical fruits, tar. It starts out soft, then the aromas invade the palate with fruit and machine shop. The finish is not the longest. A very fine Caroni, complex and deep, even if in direct comparison, the 92 seems to me to be well above the 94.

The higher alcohol content immediately makes itself noticed on the nose. Lots of cask influence, a bit of wet cork, along with wood polish, plastic, herbs and smoke. On the palate, the full Caroni package shows up: lots of rubber, glue, polish, plastic and tar. Powerful, wild and distinctly workshop-like. Despite nearly 63%, the alcohol is well integrated. There's also a slight acidity and cool notes of eucalyptus and mint. Pipe tobacco and a pleasant dryness add extra depth without becoming too dominant. The finish retains the smoky, powerful profile. Only at the end do more tropical fruits emerge. For lovers of this uncompromising Caroni profile, this is certainly an outstanding bottling. Personally, I prefer the more balanced profile of the reduced 55% version.

Yeah, a mega awesome Caroni. The first notes are as usual tar, rubber and menthol, then leather, vanilla, toffee and caramel come after. A Caroni, it really doesn't get much better. Very tasty.

Wow, very cool. After standing for a while, you are greeted by a fruity nose with apple, berries, caramel, liquorice, menthol and, of course, tar, wood and some rubber. Less fruit on the palate, but more caramel with wood, licorice, vanilla, tar, rubber and earthy notes and a few dry figs. Tastes good to me, but I found the HP almost better. I'll have to compare it again directly.

94er Caroni of top class - you taste so much "dirt" that you almost vainly look for other flavor notes. Both sweetness and fruits are only subtly present and it gets drier as the finish progresses.

The workshop notes dominate the nose here. Plus menthol and liquorice. There is also plenty of fruit, like pineapple. Wood and caramel are added on the palate. All the notes come together again in the finish, albeit somewhat in quick succession. The finish could be a little longer.

Granate. Edit: that was my first impression with the Granate and I stick to it. For me a Caroni as I want it. The Hangar Series is simply great and convincing. Nothing more needs to be said.

Really great! The Yellow Caroni of course first very similar, but not as deep and intense. I find the Yellow Caroni really good, but you definitely need the right day for such an intense barrel aging. You don't have that "problem" with this one, which makes it much more "everyday". Even with 5 years less of tropical aging, you still have high intensity, deep, ripe and complex flavors here, both on the nose and on the palate. What the Caroni nerd wants, he gets here definitely

9,4:On the nose, industrial with rubber and tar, bicycle tube, medicinal with menthol, varnish, charred/roasted wood notes like chocolate, roasted nuts with peanuts, caramel, vanilla, oaky, citrus fruits, banana and pineapple, molasses is dark with licorice, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, black berry and apple arise, perhaps the apple is baked, molasses is vegetal with chesnuts hints, black tea, pastry, cookie dough, spicy wood join, rubber is burnt, some hints of glue are present. 9,2:On the palate, the attack is industrial with rubber and tar, burnt, bicycle tube, medicinal with menthol, varnish, heavy, fruity with citrus, banana, pineapple, berries, slightly fermented with dairy, molasses is dark with licorice, herbaceous, floral, vegetal with chesnuts hints, minty, earthy with tobacco and the wood is roasted with caramel, toffee, milk chocolate, leather, slightly salty, spicy with anise. 9,4:The finish is long, dry&tannic, with roasted wood notes like chocolate, caramel, espresso, leather, meaty, smoky, spicy, medicinal, industrial, fruity with banana, pineapple, citrus fruits, slightly fermented and the molasses is dark with licorice, black tea, vegetal, grassy, minty..

I do feel like this is the better version of the hangar duo. It is like the 55% but just a bit, well more. The fruit shines through a lot more, and the mechanic workshop is less pronounced. Still by far the best 1994 out there.
