Havana Club Cuban Rum (The Whisky Exchange) 2023
"Woody, smokey, caramell and fruity" is how one taster sums it up, and that's the gist: 11-year Havana Club spirit with burnt sugar, toffee, toasted oak and a flash of solvent. Most find it pleasant but a little thin and watery for 50%, with a sharp finish. Reviews land between "well balanced" and frankly forgettable.
- Toffee and oak
- Tropical fruit notes
- 11-Year age

Aged Cuban. Some wood, which slowly turns into bitterness. Minimal residual sweetness. Wateriness paired with sharp alcohol. Well. Certainly has its collector's market.

8:On the nose, at first we get roasted and woody notes with burnt sugar, caramelized, buttery, cookie, solvents, roasted nuts, mocha, the wood is toasted and resinous. Aeration brings leather and tobacco, then more fruity side of this rum with dried fruits, peaches, prunes and its dryness. So, complex and well balanced. 8,2:On the palate, syrupy tropical fruits burst out intensively with spiciness, nutmeg. When it calms down, the wood is toasted, fruits are bourbon yellow-peaches, with honey, dried apricots and dates, the rum becomes dry and more roasted with burnt sugar, caramelized, is charred and dark, chocolatey, leathery, becoming even metallic.Later a bit acidic with citruses, lemon peel. Tasty and round. 8:The finish is long, filled with honey, dry with tropical, dried fruits, roasted nuts, toasted wood and citrusy. Some mineral notes come later...

Caramel, some solvent, volatile wood, spices, some cookie and banana. Sharp, watery and slightly artificial in the mouth Sharp finish, but long 😂 Lightweight, and no champion at that. The origin suggests a good complement to a cigar. I strongly suspect that it won't make a mark there either.

On the nose, we initially get roasted and woody notes with burnt sugar, caramelized, buttery, cookies, solvents, roasted nuts. The palate shows syrupy tropical fruit with intense spice and nutmeg, caramelized. Quite ok, but no fireworks in terms of price.

A very interesting rum on paper. Rather interchangeable from the nose to the palate to the finish. A little wood, very sweet. Some pipe tobacco and licorice in the finish, which I really like. That was probably nothing.

All in all, a better Havana Club, but one that doesn't really knock my socks off. Nice to have tried, but nothing more. It seems a little thin, but the alcohol is not quite as well integrated. As a mixer, it doesn't really convince me either.

A good Cuban, but somewhat meaningless and flat.
Review by Schnubbii
Typisch spanisches Profil, nicht schlecht, leicht alkoholisch. Als Mixer kommt er besser als pur.

Woody, smokey, caramell and fruity. Goes weel, the finish is a bit hard
Review by Alexander Rasch
Mmm... quite one-dimensional. Nose roasty with rubber tires. But all quite restrained. A little too sweet on the palate with strong bourbon notes. Thinner and alcoholic towards the end. Not quite my cup of tea for sipping. Definitely very good in Coke. More of a collector's item. The Havana Club days are simply over.

A good rum, well balanced!
Review by Solidfunk
Smells of caramel, coconut and light vanilla. A little oak. Dark golden pour. In the mouth there's not a lot more complexity. Some florals, rose petals. Paraffin. Light sweet finish. Sample thanks to Yaro.

First rum I’ve had where I’ve actually experienced tropical fruits (I know there’s loads more!) but as someone only just started with rum this is very, very, VERY enjoyable Tropical fruits, caramel/bourbon like sweetness and lovely dance of spices Easy 9/10 - stellar rum!
