Three years ex-bourbon then seven in ex-cognac casks show up as vanilla, caramel, milk chocolate and dried fruit, with licorice and raisin coming through on a long, spicy finish. Overall a fantastic first release of a Foursquare by Velier, no wonder this collaboration continued. We were some friends teaming up at Cane Rum Society in Stockholm to celebrate Foursquare Appreciation Day. After our planned tasting of four different Foursquare ECS’s led by our friend the Swedish importer, Lars Renbjer, we went on with two Foursquare Velier releases. Secondly out was the 2006 the 1st rum in the collaboration between Luca Gargano of Velier and Richard Seale of Foursquare. It’s a blend of molasses based rum from Copper double retort pot still and Coffey column still distilled in 2006. It’s tropical aged for ten years of which three years were in ex-Bourbon barrels and the following seven in ex-Cognac barrels.

A wonderful rum that has significantly contributed to Foursquare's standing as one of the most important authentic rum distilleries. The first joint bottling with Velier, a comparatively young rum from today's perspective, which convinces on the nose with lots of sweetness of vanilla, dark chocolate and caramel. Added to that are notes of pastries, dried fruits, tobacco, leather, freshly ground coffee as well as sweet licorice, allspice and mineral notes of iodine on the palate. Still a highlight from Barbados to this day.

Edit: For the big cross-tasting of the Velier bottlings, the Swell and the Barbados 2006 Flag Series also sneaked in. Unfortunately, it has not yet been possible to get a sample of the 70th. In general, it can be said that there were no big differences on the nose in blind tasting. However, differences are recognizable in the taste itself. In my opinion, three stand out clearly and form by far the tail end. Franconian Tasting Gang goes Tiki For me the BEST Foursquare I've had in the glass. A BIG THANK YOU to Jakob for letting me have the rest of the "small" sample. I would only be interested to know if Destino can top this bottling.

By far this is one of the best Foursquare's I have tried! It's just so deliciously balanced. It's laid back Barbados but its so well assembled! Fruits, vanilla, milk chocolate and caramel blend in so well to make one heck of a dram. Definitly a step up for me. It is mainly a collectors bottle these days, they are worth a lot of money if you can find it! Fortunately I got my bottle in 2019 when the pricing was still half realistic. Just a great rum to try. A medium to long finish.

Velier FS (+ a fee spected other contenders) blind cross tasting: Honestly, the results here were very close. The Belier bottlings display a very high quality thourgout the range. Triptych and Pleni came out on top for me closely followed by Destino. I was somewhat surprised, that Sassafras and 2006 came out rather at the bottom, while I enjoyed both very much on their own. Raconteur also quite low in the ranking with Principia clearly at the bottom.

A very gripping Foursquare on the nose with the usual Barbados notes: tropical fruits, dried fruits and berries mingle with vanilla wood, chocolate, sweet spices and a touch of tobacco and varnish embellish this very greedy and expressive profile. The mouth is powerful and intense, oily and warm, true to the spirit of Foursquare. The alcohol is present, but quite well integrated. We find the same roundness and aromas of the nose and the palate on a long and delicate finish. A delicious and well-balanced Foursquare, which was at a very good quality/price ratio at its release, but which is now a victim of speculation at a level beyond the reasonable.

In the nose, we have a sensation of heat, despite the aeration the 62° do not pass totally unnoticed. It is greedy with caramel, vanilla and dried fruits. A touch of milk chocolate appears. From the entrance in mouth we see that we have to deal with a thick and oily rum. We keep the caramel and the dry reasons. It is all and very pleasant. The finish is on sweet spices and caramel. A nice Foursquare, greedy and whose texture is really very pleasant. Maybe a slight reduction would have made it fabulous.

A nose of overripe banana, yellow fruit, apple, coconut, pastries and vanilla wood. The palate is soft on entry, then the aromas gain strength, and all is balance. The finish is long and, like this rum as a whole, balanced. In this finish, I perceive a surprisingly sweet bitterness. At the very end, there's a hint of roasted coconut that's a little too strong for my taste and takes away a few points.

One of the better Foursquares. Very round and elegant, lovely caramel notes in addition to wood, vanilla and milk chocolate. But not worth the price off admission as this bottle is overpriced on todays market.

The disappointment of the evening ... find the notes from the cognac barrel unconvincing (va raisin for me), and find both the wood of the 2008 ECS and the coconut of the ECS 2009 better rums. But the alcohol integration is insane, so really perfect!

9,2:On the nose, the first impression we get is fruity with cherry, citrus(orange peel) and dried fruits, balanced with roasted wood notes like caramel, nuts, some brown sugar, spicy with vanilla and cinnamon. On aeration, coconut and banana arise, varnish is obvious, milk chocolate and pastry from roasted wood and molasses with tobacco. 9,1:On the palate, the attack is tasty, round and balanced, oily with roasted wood notes like milk chocolate, caramel, leather, spices like vanilla and cinnamon, pairing the dried apricots, raisins and coconut, with citrus touch, later joined by berries and grapes.Underneath flow some solvents, as alcohol is perfectly integrated.With rest, the rum becomes darker with black tea...A fragrant violent adds to its complexity and rounds our tasting. 8,9:The finish is long, dry and tannic, fruity with toasted coconut and berries, woody and spicy, some tobacco might be noticed...

I'm finally tasting this famous Foursquare 2006. No surprise on the nose with round and woody notes. It feels slighlty too dry in my opinion. Palate is complex and way better balanced with a rather similar profile. A very nice rum ! An easy sipper for sure 😋

A rarity that you don't get so easily. A piece of Foursquare history and what a piece. The round and perfectly balanced nose has a delicious and deep fruit component (banana, raspberry, coconut), but at the same time captivating barrel notes. The mouthfeel is also tasty and balanced. Price is too high nowadays, but certainly one of the best Foursquares.

... Foursquare is a distillery from Barbados producing amazing rums for everyday sipping. It's a rum that will be appreciated especially by Romanians who are fed up with sugar and are looking for a smooth, sweet rum full of coconut, vanilla, chocolate and caramel. ON THE NOSE It’s nicely powerful, with the alcoholic part well balanced and you can sense notes of burnt caramel, spices (cinnamon, vanilla), dried fruit, wood and cocoa..! ON THE PALATE It’s well structured and consistent with the nose but also develops scents of ripe banana, black pepper, vanilla, and a slight minerality which in my opinion gives a bit of depth to the drink with its 62% ABV well integrated giving the distillate the right alcoholic strength! A LONG FINISH nice and long, with spicy returns closes a really very valid drink..!

Very good Foursquare from Velier, which already stands out clearly from virtually all ECS Foursquares in the nose and underlines its outstanding position on the palate accordingly. We are talking about nuances here, but they are the decisive factor in the pleasure area. It is a pleasure to recognize and enjoy them.

Nice Foursquare with a bit more depth than the typical younger ECS releases. On the nose, vanilla, wood, caramel, and some dark fruit. On the palate, dry and spicy with oak, pastry, and a slight sweetness. The alcohol is well integrated and gives the rum a solid structure.

In direct comparison to the other two Destinos, this one clearly loses. Aromatically tasty and balanced - although for the first 20 minutes a bit alcoholic on the nose and a bit fiercer on the palate - but then it opens up nicely after some time. The hype around it - even though this 2006 laid the foundation for great Foursquare - I think it's still not worth it at the current prices. Still a great historical bottling!

Following our Lineup dedicated to Foursquare, Thomas kindly shared a few bottles of one of the distillery's gems with me: The Foursquare 2006 The first and probably most iconic of the co-bottlings born from the collaboration between Velier and Foursquare in 2015. It was released in early 2016 and sold out almost immediately. With only 2,400 bottles available worldwide, the rum was the subject of a real rush. It is a rum distilled in 2006 (column/pot still blend), which was aged for 10 years under the Barbados sun in ex-Bourbon (3 years) and ex-Cognac (7 years) casks for double maturation. It was bottled in 2016 in BDF at 62% (with an incredible angel's share of 72%). Having read a lot of positive reviews, and knowing full well that I would never have the chance to get my hands on a bottle, I revelled in tasting this unicorn sample! This Single Blended Rum has a beautiful, very rich reddish-brown color (darker than usual for FS). On the nose, it's the usual Foursquare but more concentrated: fruit (banana/pineapple), caramel, and vanilla! On the palate, however, it's wow, with concentrated, powerful fruitiness that explodes in the mouth! There are also lovely notes of licorice. The finish is incredibly long and intense with wood and spices. There's no doubt about it, this is a complex, intense rum that is very stimulating to taste. It came close to dethroning the Destino 70 Years Velier, which is currently my favorite Foursquare rum. But I completely understand the hype surrounding this bottling, as it is so high quality. However, paying over €1,000 for it... let's not push it too far!

Foursquare generally offers a very stable and consistent quality - some might find this 'boring', but you know what you're getting. Here you definitely get one of the best Foursquare in the glass, wonderfully matured and aged. The nose already promises great aromas of vanilla, milk chocolate, and cask notes. The alcohol is wonderfully integrated and brings the taste round and full-bodied on the tongue. Yes, it's a Foursquare - you know what you're getting. But it is a very good representative of its brand.

An exceptional run. The nose is more subtle than many Foursquare rum’s, light vanilla and wood with some caramel. The mouth brings more layers, complex and a slight alcoholic edge, vanilla, raisin and caramel. Finish is long, with oak and spice and some mocha. For sure top tier, think the cognac influence brings a bit of elegance and all the classic Barbados hallmarks. Look forward to trying again and seeing how the bottle evolves
