One member blind-tasted this and guessed mezcal, not rum — that tells you where it lives. Raw sugarcane, wet earth, crushed herbs and a mineral, almost medicinal edge run right through into a long grassy finish. At 51% the alcohol shows, a couple of tasters called it borderline numbing. Fans of the Clairin style dig the wild rusticity; it's not built to be easy.

8:On the nose, fresh, vegetal sugarcane with briny olive, tomatoes, oily, mineral, herbaceous, medicinal with esters, glue, iodine, smoky, synthetic, meaty with bacon, fermented citrus fruits, bump into our nosetrils, arrack alike. On aeration, the cane is earthy, flowery, spicy, vegetal with mushrooms, tropical fruits arise, dairy hints and some confectionery. 7,9:On the palate, the attack is fresh, dry with vegetal sugar cane with saffran, briny olive, oily, tomatoes, basil, herbaceous, floral, grassy, mineral, fruity with fermented tropical, citrus fruits, dairy, medicinal, smoky, meaty with bacon. 8:The finish is medium long, dry, with grassy, floral sugarcane, vegetal with briny olive, tomatoes, basil, fresh, spicy with ginger, fruity with fermented tropical fruits like pineapple, citrus fruits, dairy, medicinal, chemical, slightly synthetic, smoky, meaty with bacon.

On the nose, sharp citrus, medicinal, earthy, and herbal notes already come to the fore. As does the very floral, earthy character. This certainly comes through on the palate as well. The floral, earthy, and slightly fresh notes predominate, in particular. Finish is slightly dry and earthy/floral again. A nice, unique flavor in which the sugarcane taste also comes to the fore.

Atypical rum, I didn't find the touch of "smokiness" found in some clairins. The positives: a fairly fruity nose, a vegetal/mineral palate. Unusual flavors. Negatives: alcohol quite present, even anaesthetic.

Blind, I would probably have guessed mezcal rather than rum. The typical sharp, earthy, vegetal, and herbal aromas dominate everything here, lasting long into the finish. These Clairins are just crazy.

We then have two more clairins. Almost always the same, here too we have a floral, fresh, grisly, earthy and mineral rum. Sugar cane is recognizable here. A really nice clairin.

Tasted this Clairin together with the RX16825, which I liked significantly better. This bottling is quite reserved on the nose for a Clairin. Weak vegetal aromas with subtle sugarcane notes. On the palate, then, stronger flavors. But here too, somewhat one-dimensional on the vegetal/sugarcane sweetness aroma. The whole thing leads into a comparatively short finish. You could say the more elegant variant, although I prefer the wilder style of Le Rocher.

The best of the 3 Clairins tasted today. A light vegetal note meets nice mineral tones and a fine sweetness. A very interesting combination, although the fruit notes are somewhat missing for me. Overall, a good rum, but the Sajous 2019 tasted alongside plays in a completely different league.

#4516 09.12.2023 Just brought the missus to the plane and now it's time to party a bit,but first the impressions from yesterday's tasting ☺️ This is yet another nice release with s very fresh and green profile. The palate is spicy /warm and fruity. The finish is medium to long with a touch of ginger. The empty glass has light pepper and very light smoke.

03/05/25: tasted at a local spirits shop. I tasted a few Clairins before (Sajous, Vaval,...), and I rate this one a bit lower than them. Still a very interesting, complex dram but I still prefer the Sajous.

A singular clairin profile, not easy to tame at first. The nose develops a blend of aromatic herbs, earthy vegetation, tomato and sugarcane, before becoming more medicinal, iodized and mineral. It seems almost synthetic in the long run. The atypical profile continues on the palate with an explosion of vegetal, earthy and spicy notes. Saffron, paprika, basil and pumpkin combine with sugarcane, while the more fermented, phenolic and mineral side gains intensity on the palate. This is an intense, highly concentrated clairin. The alcohol is quite well integrated, but it could be better. The finish is long, still focused on the vegetal, earthy part, while the medicinal notes are calmer and more measured. Basil and sugarcane are pleasant on the finish, bringing a touch of delicacy to this rather rustic profile. Not recommended for beginners, this clairin will nevertheless be a profile to try for anyone interested in Haiti.
