Fresh-lacquered oak, menthol and eucalyptus hit first, then ripe mango and papaya push through once it opens up. This 19-year Clarendon MMW is a proper tropical-aged Jamaican: glue, tar, spice and dark chocolate under all that fruit. Most tasters agree it needs plenty of air, and the 67.2% shows — the reward is a long, warm, complex pour.

Yes, it can do something! Typical Monymusk, initially light esters, then just warm and oily and delicately fruity. I'll have to sharpen it up again: I can't quite keep the 84 points I just gave it, the rum is too peppery for that.

Unfortunately not quite my cup of tea. Mainly menthol, lots of wood, quite metallic, alcoholic and very fresh menthol without the otherwise intense grapefruit, tropical fruit notes. The nose promised more than the taste delivered.

Third Clarendon of the evening. Clearly related to the previous MMW, but age has already played a big part. It's still very fruity, but the wood has given it a mentholated, gourmand side that attenuates the fermented side, even if it's still very present.

Here, Nobilis offers a Clarendon in a raw form resembling the famous 1995 and 1997 vintages. The nose is very powerful. The fruit is exotic and slightly acidic on citrus, the wood and spices are spicy, but the profile is most interesting in its more empyreumatic (roasted notes) and medicinal side, offering a lovely bouquet of glue, varnish, solvents, olive and a pleasant mineral edge. But alcohol is not far away. The attack on the palate is lively, and while the alcohol may hit at the slightest misstep, it remains remarkably well integrated. Herbaceous, mentholated notes erupt alongside roasted, medicinal and rubbery ones. Strong spices (pimento), wood and chocolate confirm the impression of a full-bodied rum that's eager to make a name for itself. Tropical and dried fruits are the only form of sweetness in this dry, gripping and complex profile. The finish is long, warm, still dominated by scents between alcohol, menthol, medicinal and empyreumatic notes. Fruity, spicy and dark chocolate notes are also perceptible. A somewhat electric rum with a lot to offer for its age and price.

The tropical maturation has done this Clarendon a lot of good... it is full of rough edges, but in a positive sense. Intense aromas of fruit, wood and spice are clearly perceptible and can be easily tamed after some time. The alcohol is relatively present

Big big love for this bottle at the end of a meal with friends. We've got everything you need in terms of fruit, the nose is almost alcohol-free, of course the palate slaps you in every sense but the orange, menthol, and wood are well balanced. Only good stuff (and on top of that on sale at ~30%, what more could the people want). Edit: bitterness and astringency at the end of the glass which aren't necessarily top-notch. Edit: still a great moment.

This Clarendon was aged for 14 years in its tropical home. And this time is evident in this wine. Very intense, powerful aromas gradually unfold here. Take your time and enjoy or add a nice body to a cocktail. Very good!

Tasted at the Franconian Tasting. Thanks DomM for providing it. But I'm not warming to Clarendon at the moment. After tasting together on our rounds, I think this one is rather a weaker bottling for me.

The nose promises a lot! Tasted straight away, the 67.2% is still very noticeable, I was probably a little too hasty. After half an hour in the glass, I can say that the percentages are well integrated. Intensely spicy and woody, with a slightly smoky finish and a subtle menthol note. I think that this rum could still develop very positively in the bottle. Thanks to Chris for the sample!

10.02.2024 tasting event at the Nobilis Warehouse, Haderslev. Retasting and I still love it. Score is still the same. ----------------------- #4294 11.10.2023 This is a really good rum and I think the price tag is very fair. Intense and fruity with a vegetal and medicinal note. The palate is warm and fruity and well balanced with good ABV integration. The finish is long and warm with nice fruits. Draws really nice curtains in the glass. The empty glass has some plum and faint chocolate.

And to finish a Clarendon. Tropical fruits are actually only very vaguely noticeable here. Instead, it is quite medicinal and metallic. Also glue and nail polish are recognizable here.

On the nose still primarily fruity, from the palate I immediately think of Caroni - besides the fruits you taste rubber, some tar, various spices and a subtle sweetness. The finish gets drier and drier. I like it very much!

I couldn't tame this beast. Tasted it over two nights, aired it out, diluted it, nothing worked. I always got the bite/burn of an alcohol that's too present for me. A shame because behind that, it was really well made. But for me, this is a bottling mistake since the balance just isn't there.

Fantastic Clarendon, wonderful nose with fruits & intense wood notes. On the palate it gets more alcoholic with wood spices and a bit unbalanced. With some water it gets more balanced between fruits & wood, gaining some points.

Yes, a Clarendon, unmistakable. Like the Bottle Shop with a distinct minty note. Delicious, but not quite at the level of the Sponge or the Bottle Shop bottling. Less complex, less fruity.

Right after pouring, the rum is still very closed and mainly characterized by the high-gloss polished and freshly lacquered oak with lots of eucalyptus and menthol. Only after some time in the air does it open up and allow fruity influences of ripe mangoes and papayas. The high alcohol strength presses strongly on the taste buds, but this does not manifest as excessive sharpness, only as a sharp intensity. Towards the end, there is a subtle, medicinal-tarry smoky note, which further increases the complexity. Patience is a virtue and is rewarded, as proven again with this MMW.

07-02-2025 Sample bought at Nobilis Warehouse Tasting #2 Are found of the Nobilis Clarendon 11 years. This one is better. The extra age and integration between rum and the high ABV is also better in this one. Full power on fruit taste and nose. Long finish. First time tasting MMW and it is very nice. The nose and palate was just wonderful, with more of the industrial notes that I typically seek out. The fruit is present and gives a nice balance to the barrel notes. The age shows off well with the minty menthol/black tea notes, just as expected for something with 19 years of aging (14 at Clarendon). I am a bit disappointed with the finish on this. It has all the right notes and evolution but it disappears far too quickly unfortunately. Overall, I am happy with this and am eager to seek out more MMW. Edit: 21/8/2026 - Adjusted score from 8.4 to 8.5

This is a very nice Clarendon MMW. Fruity, woody, menthol. It all harmonizes well together, but it also needs its time in the glass. The alcohol is, as often with Clarendon, not particularly well integrated.

Extremely relaxed nose for the high alcohol content with lots of wood, almond and roasted aromas. On the tongue, a beautiful interplay of the medicine man who has just collected fresh mint in the forest. Finishes beautifully dry, perfect for wood lovers.

Very spicy Clarendon with a lot of wood influence. Beautiful fruit toffee mixture in the nose and apricot jam on the palate with a good portion of pepper. There is a lot to discover here and the alcohol is well integrated and warms nicely.

Perfect woody Clarendon just the way I like it. A combination of Jamaican fruity basket with an above-standard portion of wood, just as we expect from the older Clarendon. A multi-layered taste that gradually reveals its possibilities.

A nice sharp Clarendon. Wet, really intense, solvent, varnish, menthol, a bit of dried fruits, young wood. On the palate sharp and peppery but still pleasant, lots of fresh flavor, a touch of young wood, varnish and solvent, dried fruits, glue. The finish is nicely long and warm.

Great Clarendon, which I would have blindly mistaken 100% for a St. Lucia. Wonderful alcohol integration, the benefits of tropical maturation and a beautifully balanced profile. The final touch is missing from the best St. Lucias, but nevertheless a great rum.

Tasted this at SDR23, so my review remains rather concise. Lavish aromas of berrymix, tropical and dried fruits. Very cask spice driven with old wood and vanilla. One can only imagine this is what ‘the tropics’ smell like. Follows up with additional fresh and herbal notes, as well as heavy, dirty and oily components. Extremely well balanced. The dirt and oil continue on the palate, with less fruits and more herbs such as mint and thyme. Very complex and delicately built profile with a base of dried fruits, burnt caramel and oak. As with most Clarendon ‘04 needs to be aerated excessively, but what a reward you get for spending time with this in your glass. I could spend hours nosing and tasting this. Definitely the highlight of SDR23.

Retested at GRF2025 Still a very solid rum. I have rated it a bit higher (+0.6). But I have to admit that in my taste and experience, Clarendon are a bit of a hit or miss. This one is definitely a hit. Nose is pleasant and very woody and tropical fruit. Taste reflects the above and the finish lingers.

A heavy, solid rum with many layers. The aroma is a pleasant combination of technical notes and tropical fruits, the taste is much more brutal (leather, chocolate). Nothing for beginners, but a more experienced rum drinker will find his or her own.
