Cane Rum Bottling Company Caroni Single Cask Rum 1998
What surprises most tasters here is the menthol — a cool, minty streak running through the classic Caroni rubber, leather and old wood. This 1998, aged 25 years and bottled at 61%, leans softer and rounder than expected, with dried apricot and a touch of dark chocolate. Several call it atypical: less of the dirty tar, more sweetness up front that turns bitter on a long, dry finish.

How does Cane Rum Bottling Company Caroni Single Cask Rum 1998 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Softer 25yo Caroni with a menthol streak Loved as a rounded, softer Caroni with real menthol and tobacco character. Most agree the 61% could be better integrated, and a few miss the full dirty profile.

Overall an extremely round, smooth and well balanced Caroni without losing some of the more dirty notes. Tasted this at a special tasting at Rum Cane Society (CRS) in Stockholm, which is the rum bar in Europe with most different rum bottlings. The Cane Bottling Co. is a Swedish IB founded and owned by Lars Renbjer and Niklas Blomquist, the latter co-owner of CRS. The rum is a 25yo column distilled rum from the Caroni distillery. It’s Continental aged first for 8 years in former bourbon casks and thereafter in old rum casks for the rest of the time.

First Caroni. I was expecting to get walloped but this is a lot more approachable than I was expecting. Nose I get faint ripe bananas and floral - almost like a 40% abv Agricole. Charred oak, spice. Mouth I get Leathery, industrial, slightly menthol on the pallet as well as thin and sharp. The menthol is pretty far back there - which I appreciate. After a while I get hubba bubba. Pallet lingers lite with leather, smoke and tobacco - like a scotch.

Gentle Caroni that is fun to drink. The alcohol is a little too present for a top rating. Nevertheless, a well-rounded and balanced Caroni experience.

Nose is comparatively flat with not to much going on. Nice and enjoyable on the plate. Sweetness forwards with not much of your classic Caroni notes.
Review by SaibotZtar
Spicy Caroni... Alcohol could be better integrated. Red fruits, plum some mint. Leather and wood ... looks pleasing and harmonious. Finish then slightly bitter.
Review by Manuel
An exceptionally gentle and soft Caroni. Slight sharpness and sweetness noticeable on the finish. The typical Caroni notes come through well. There are definitely better Caroni representatives, but I like this one more and more.

#5350 26.05.2025 Just got back from a birthday party with bread and few sweets as well as sugar free cookies 😊 Time to clean up the palate with a few nice samples. Nose Wood, light roasted, light leather, faint cherry, light dried fruit, faint smoke, light rubber. Palate Wood, light smoke, medium dry, round, balanced, light dried fruit, light rubber, spice, light cherry, faint mint. Finish Medium to long, wood, light roasted, light rubber, light raisin, faint mint. Empty glass Light mint, rubber, vanilla, light nutts. Needs to rest for a good while for the ABV to settle and the profile to open up.

Continuing with processing old samples. For a Caroni quite okay. Has beautiful dirty typical Caroni notes. For me personally, it's a bit too alcoholic. I've had better from the 98 vintage in the glass.

Quite a big surprise. The aroma is rather less pronounced, but it does not deny the technical notes of the caroni. On the palate, it's classic grandpa's workshop with tar and rubber. Hints of wood and leather and a swirly tongue at higher abv. A round and complex rum.

The nose is strangely very close to a very old Martinique agricole. You are immediately overwhelmed by leather, cigar box tobacco, and a delicate, refined woody note, like wood dust in a cabinetmaker's workshop. There are also dried fruits, notably the acidity of dried apricots but still syrupy. You can also perceive melted dark chocolate, slightly burnt at the bottom of a pan. It's a rather soft, captivating nose. The entry on the palate is lively but not burning. It's more of a spicy, peppery attack on a very present rubbery base. The woodiness is more pronounced than on the nose but everything blends perfectly. It's balanced. It's a very dry and heavy rum on the palate, but with good integration of the alcohol. The length in the mouth extends endlessly, and the finish is bitter, with notes of very old oak. The molasses is "sticky" in the throat, and you feel this rum for a very long time.

Smooth 1998 Caroni in which all the typical components come into their own. It still lacks some complexity for an absolute top rating and the alcohol is a little too present at the end. Nevertheless very tasty :)

Once again a Caroni that breaks the mold. Lots of menthol, wood, some bitterness.

Not a typical Caroni profile. Alcohol could have been better integrated

Another 1998 Caroni from Cane Rum. The alcohol could be better integrated, but after some time in the glass it is quite harmonious. Even though the sweetness pushes the dirty notes somewhat into the background.
Review by Wernie
Not a typical Caroni, I miss the typical aromas. I find the nose very round, spicy with dried fruit. A surprising sweetness on the palate that quickly turns bitter. All quite dark notes. The finish is quite short.

My first Caroni and I am not dissapointed. I understand what all the fuzz is about 👍. Very rich Rhum in my book, will search for more Caroni

Surprising presence of menthol and earthy tobacco notes alongside the HTR markers. Exciting 1998 Caroni with nice complexity in the aroma spectrum. I like it, but it doesn't seem fully balanced in taste.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing rum at the height of its fame, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.

Vintage 1998, bottled from a single cask. With 8.7 out of 10, it belongs to the better ones that have come into my glass.
Review by EspritRhum
Not very expressive nose, better on the palate but given the price of the bottle I expected better.
