Petrol and dry wood up front, with papaya, faint varnish and a whisper of coconut underneath — this is Fiji at its most astringent, and the people here mean that as a compliment. Distilled in 2002 and split between tropical and continental aging, it lands intense, spicy and a little herbal-bitter on the palate. At 61% it needs a long rest in the glass to settle. Not a first rum.

Overall a very interesting rum. Hadn’t expected something like this from Fiji. Tasted this at a special tasting at Rum Cane Society (CRS) in Stockholm, which is the rum bar in Europe with most different rum bottlings. The Cane Bottling Co. is a Swedish IB founded and owned by Lars Renbjer and Niklas Blomquist, the latter co-owner of CRS. The rum is a 21yo Pot Still blended with some column still from the South Pacific Distillery in Fiji. It’s tropical aged for 7 years on former bourbon casks and thereafter continental aged for 14 years more.

#5474 12.07.2025 Late tasting with a set of friends and I'm always happy when we meet up. Nose Intense, wood, light roasted, fruity, faint varnish, sweet, light dried fruit, spice, light ester, faint coconut. Palate Intense, wood, light roasted, light papaya, faint varnish, faint coconut, light ester, light vanilla, sweet, medium spicy. Finish Long and warm, wood, spice, medium spicy, medium intense, light citrus, faint chocolate. Empty glass Vanilla, chocolate, light dried fruit, light orange, light coconut. Needs to rest for a long time to settle and really open up properly.

Interesting proximity to the (almost legendary) 2001 profile, but the taste experience on the palate tends to be very spicy and tart. Intense, complex, unfortunately without the final balance.
