#6311 05.02.2026 Relaxing with a few samples warming up for The Village tomorrow. This will be my first time to attend and they should have a nice selection of rums. A pretty average Mhoba with a good price tag. Fruity with some glue, rubber and funny pastry notes.

A Mhoba in its most standard expression but that does not lose any of its originality. The nose always sparks debates between very ripe fruits (banana, pineapple), notes of glue, rubber, and butter, as well as spicy, toasted, and caramelized notes. It's not as extreme as other bottlings, but remains accessible (or off-putting for some). The attack on the palate continues on this offbeat theme, both fruity, vegetal, medicinal, rubbery, caramelized, and spicy (notably ginger). Behind this hides the sugarcane of the South African terroir, which leaves a nice syrupy texture to support the mouthfeel. The alcohol is overall well integrated, but a few more degrees wouldn't have hurt. The finish is relatively long, impregnating the palate with its very atypical aromas. We find ginger, sugarcane, tropical fruits, spices, toasted and medicinal notes, as well as tobacco. The whole is a bit drier but shows roundness. A good basic Mhoba to introduce someone to a product that stands out from the ordinary.

The aged entry-level rum from Mhoba. An inviting nose that already offers the ester-heavy but also rounding notes of aging. The rum seemed unusually intense for 43°, but it is also very dry and sharp in the mouth.

Nose is sweet (caramel, cream toffee) and ester focused. The palate is sweet too and with a buttery feel. The vanilla, ginger, peppery, coconut and banana. The finish is sweet, woody and peppery. Very good! The rums may taste different anyway but trying this relative to the French oak cask at 65% suggest the dilution helps. I think Mhoba rums have plenty going on and can deliver at lower ABVs. Looking forward to trying the Stand 101 soon.
