Sip this slowly and neat, then give it air — it needs a while to settle. The nose throws off something meaty and musty (a few tasters say Maggi soup and gravy), but the palate is dark, spicy and oily, with prunes, molasses, oak and a surprising fruity Jamaican lift. Da kommt schon richtig Power in der Nase. Ich tippe auf einen recht hohen Jamaika-Anteil - steht ihm sehr gut. Recht frisch aber trotzdem kommen die typischen dunkel, röstigen Navy-Assoziationen durch. Macht richtig Spaß! Vielen Dank an Mirco für die Teilung!

Un rhum historique qui est remarquablement bien conservé, à l’épreuve du temps. Le nez est très parfumé, pris en étau entre les notes sombres, douces et épicées de Guyana (pruneau, réglisse, anis, café, chocolat, caramel, mélasse, torréfaction) et les arômes lourds et étonnamment bien fruités encore de Jamaïque (fruits exotiques). Les notes florales, de tabac et de thé noir apportent une fraîcheur bienvenue. Un rhum assez complexe, mais complet et évolutif. L’attaque en bouche est très élégante. Les épices donnent un petit coup de fouet, tandis que les fruits et les notes douces de Demerara contrebalancent avec plus de rondeur. On retrouve également le chêne, le tabac, des notes d’herbes aromatiques et de thé noir. La texture est huileuse et souple, rendant le rhum très agréable tant en termes de consistance que de goût. L’alcool est très bien intégré, sûrement assagi avec l’âge, mais il est vraiment dans un optimum entre le vieillissement et la fougue des saveurs. La finale est plus sèche, plus tannique et un poil plus subtile. L’amertume et les notes torréfiées sur le café et le cacao, ainsi que le boisé tannique et le cuir, confèrent une coté lourd plus prononcé. Les fruits, le thé noir et le tabac ont pris le pas sur les épices, avec quelques notes de caramel et de mélasse typique de Demerara. Un joli morceau d’histoire, qui on espère sera préservé du temps.

Ein wunderbares Stück Rum-Geschichte. Toll integrierter Alkohol, cremig im Mund, gutes Zusammenspiel aus Guyana- und Jamaika-Elementen, Trinidad ist eher weniger präsent. Für die höchsten Weihen fehlt etwas Komplexität, trotzdem ein Privileg, im Jahr 2023 einen Rum wie diesen trinken zu dürfen. Dafür herzlichen Dank an Mirco!

Delicious navy rum with sweet Demerara backbone, which is gallantly complemented by tropical fruits. In addition, present spicy notes and subtle latte flavors...not settled in the Champions League, but this is still really fun!

Amazing piece of history. This one is heavily dominated by Guayna Column Still notes to my palate. Dark, rich and heavy. Definitly enjoyable, however, lacks some complexity which made other flagons, I was able to taste, truely outstanding.

1953, das ist mal eine Ansage. Der Geruch erinnert mich ein wenig an das Öffnen einer Maggitüte. Bisschen Bratensoße und etwas muffig. Die Lust auf den ersten Schluck hielt sich somit erstmal in Grenzen. Der Geschmack dann aber ganz anders. Eine angenehme Würze trifft auf leichte fruchtige Jamaikanoten. Das Holz ist auch sehr präsent. Der Alkohol perfekt eingebunden. Der Geschmack ist top und bringt ihm eine sehr gute Bewertung. Vielen Dank für die Teilung.

Auf Dienstreise ein feines Tröpfchen dabei: zum zweiten Mal habe ich die Chance, eine ehrwürdige Probe aus einem alten Navy Flakon zu probieren. Danke Richy für diese Möglichkeit. Ich bin gespannt: Nase: sehr gedeckt, sehr alt, aber schön würzig. Kommt zunächst recht muffig rüber. Ich habe sogar Assoziation mit Shiitake-Pilz. Langsam kommen feinere Noten durch: Dörrpflaume, getrocknete Dattel, aber auch dunkle (etwas überreife) Früchte wie Kirsche, schwarze Johannisbeere und Brombeere. Aber allesamt nicht frisch, sondern eher abgestanden und dennoch konzentriert. Geht auch in Richtung altem Portweins. Die Würze findet sich in einer angenehmen Maggi-Note wieder. Etwas verhalten, aber doch interessant, kein Hochgenuss aber Geschichte im Glas. Deshalb 8,4 Gaumen: deutlich intensiver als die Nase, sehr schön. Würzig-holzig-fruchtig, mit getrockneter Pflaume, etwas Maggi und Pfeffer, Vanille und Liebstöckel dazu. Nach dem ersten, auch etwas muffigen, Antritt kommt kurz bitter-saure Holzsäure durch. Dahinter versöhnen Ahornsirup und Melasse den Gaumen etwas. Schön, diese aufkonzentrierten Aromen alten Navy-Stils im Glas zu haben. Dafür 8,5. Etwas überlagert, etwas muffig, aber immernoch genial. 🫠

Krasses historisches Destillat. Viel Holz, viel Gewürze, viel Tannine, recht adstringierend. Hat was von kräftigem Kaffee, Lakritz, Zartbitterschokolade, gebrannter Melasse, Bitterorange und Zitronenschale und frisch gebranntes Leder... Kann mir gut vorstellen dass der in der british navy beim rauen seewetter in rauen Mengen die Kehlen hinunter lief! Spannende Erfahrung, danke an Mirco für die Möglichkeit!

Für die 500. Verkostung ein kleines Stück Rum-Geschichte aus einem echten Navy Flagon. Nicht gerade der Gipfel der Komplexität aber trotzdem noch sehr gut und interessant. Dunkles Guyana und etwas fruchtiges Jamaika sind klar erkennbar und mit etwas Standzeit wird er sehr lecker und das Maggi-artige Gemisch überladener Infinity Bottles verzieht sich.

First of all, many thanks for sharing this rare gem. Beginning with the nose, metallic (copper), tropical fruits and some hints of Jamaica funk. It also has some meaty aspects (sausages?) I can’t really put my finger on. Also we have some coffee and spices. The palate is nice, ahornsirup, brown sugar, milkcoffee and baking spices (cardamom?). The finish is warm, sweet and easy without any off-notes (maybe a slight bitterness, but we are talking nuances here) and overall not extremely complex. Summarised I really liked it and felt almost humbled to have such an old spirit. Tasting it I got reminded that those bottlings were probably around average back when it had been flagoned. Taking this into account it shouldn’t be a surprise that „just“ some decades of time hadn’t catapulted this dram in a completely different league taste-wise.
