Here's the surprise: at 64% this Venezuelan doesn't scald you. The heavily charred cask gives it a roasty, smoky base with nougat, coffee and dark chocolate, then wood, pepper and dried fruit follow. One taster called it what Diplomático Reserva would taste like without the additives and water. Dry, warm and full, with the alcohol tucked in better than the proof suggests.

#4252 16.09.2023 Whisky N Rum Show 2023. Another release with a good price tag. What I like about this rum is the nice light smoky wood notes mixed with the fruit and spices. This one also has a oily feel and a long warm finish. I noticed some nutty notes in the empty glass.

Then the collection was expanded with a no. 16 - finally a 12 year rum from Venezuela in this series and it really suits my taste - a pure pleasure to enjoy 😋👍

A great cask was bottled here. As often with rum from Venezuela, this one was probably heavily charred before filling, creating a roasted-smoky base mood with lots of nougat chocolate and coffee, on which the slightly fruity distillate can present itself. The high alcohol strength is only noticeable in the smell at first, while in the mouth the salivary glands are massively activated but no cutting sharpness torments the mucous membranes. Really fun for me!

The color is very dark, almost reddish brown. On the nose caramel, vanilla, wood up to marzipan. On the palate caramel, wood and again fruit... the finish is beautifully warming and long, I like that the alcohol is quite well integrated into the taste this time - or rather the long finish. Very good value for money - for decent money, a rum suitable for evening relaxation after a hard day... and long savoring while reflecting...

Wonderful nose, great alcohol integration, first some sweetness, followed by the spicyness and heat from the “high” abv (again, good integration) and finally a long warm finish. Great rum for the price! This is how the Diplomatico Reserva would taste if you don’t “ruin it” with additives and water (no shaming - the classic is legendary for me and other rum enthusiasts!)
