A.H. Riise Royal Danish Navy Rum
"First glue and raisin in the nose, then sugar peanuts, then apricot," one member notes — and that sweet, spiced Christmas-cake profile is the whole story here. Expect heavy caramel, candied orange peel, raisins and warm baking spice. Fans call it a soft winter dessert sipper; plenty of others find it syrupy and artificial. Very sweet, and it leans more toward liqueur than a traditional rum.

How does A.H. Riise Royal Danish Navy Rum taste?
From community reviews · summarized with AI
Very sweet, caramel-orange dessert sipper Deeply divisive. Sweet-tooth drinkers love the caramel-orange dessert profile and easy softness; experienced tasters call it syrupy, artificial and barely rum-like. The added sugar is the dividing line.

The first rum, which caused me to fall in love with rums. It's heavy, sweet and fruity (mostly orange and raisins). Most of the rum lovers hate A.H. Riise for their sweetness but to be honest, if somebody ask me, how the sailor's rum should taste, first which I will told - sweet and heavy, like you will drink a bread.

7:Like most of the brand's rums, the nose is initially marked by fairly heavy notes of banana or very ripe pineapple. And as with most of these rums, these notes are very stealthy, followed by soft spices. We then get lots of cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg, like in a Christmas gingerbread. The sensation is very spicy and peppery. There's also a hint of vegetal, expressed through cola and a cigar leaf. Spices definitely dominate, but an oxidized wineiness flatters the nose. Aeration gives way to red fruits, and we imagine a sweet grenadine. The amarena cherry is there, in the form of tangy candy. The fruity aspect that follows is rather surprising given the overall profile: raspberry jam takes us towards the creaminess of the goy ave, which contrasts with the candy side. 5,8:On the palate, spices fly in all directions, joined by coffee. One almost forgets that this is a cane spirit, but the molasses is now present. It's black and licorice-like. As on the nose, there's an oxidized wineiness that, combined with the prune, is rather gourmand. Chocolate ranks alongside all this greediness. 5:The finish is very sweet, the prune swollen and candied..

Candied oranges, raisins, cotton candy, hidden stewed yellow plums, a few Christmas spices... ...soft, even really creamy in the mouth but not watery, has volume, the 40% ABV fits well, the nose repeats itself + some milk chocolate... ...medium length, a bit of wood can be guessed, the spices get a bit stronger and more bitter and it stays sweet. Dangerously easy to drink, it goes down like oil. It's quite simple, but I still like it.

Day 13 of my Christmas Calendar and this is still a rum I don't emreally want to dance with. Very sweet and lots of caramel. The nose is actually rather light. ----------- This rum is way too sweet and caramel is pungent and super dominant. Not my cup of tea.

A soft and sweet rum from the house of A.H. Riise. Raisins, plums and caramel shape the flavor profile and of course the ever-present Riise-typical sweetness. A good entry-level rum, nothing more but also nothing less.
Review by Daniel
Sweet, fruity Riise that stands out from its even fruitier brothers through the chocolate notes.
Review by F.L.O.
The perfect rum for mixed ice or muesli. For drinking neat, it's a bit for the sweet faction. But it fits quite well in cocktails. So you can't demonize Riise. Every rum has its justification... almost every one :-)

Fantastischer Geschmack. Erstmals getrunken in Wismar 2025.
Review by Sven Erbe
Fantastically fruity, a very slight spiciness but it fits well. Long warm finish with apple and berries until at the end a sweetness that slightly numbs the tongue remains.
Review by Tim
Very artificial-looking rum. Sweet, slightly fruity, somehow roasted, nutty and wintry spicy. Not subterranean, but not good either.

Nose: Spices, ginger, cinnamon, candied fruit Taste: Caramel, gingerbread, ginger, orange peel Finish: Spicy, chilli, ginger again, honey, caramel, spices

When it gets colder outside, it’s Riise Rum time for me, as these rums are usually sweet and remind me of Christmas. This rum is sweet but also spicy. I hardly taste fruit, caramel and some chocolate dominate. A good Riise Rum, fits well for winter. But none of my Riise favorites, as it’s not very fruity and relatively spicy. I like it fruitier, less spicy, milder. Also I miss more flavor towards chocolate or caramel. All in all a good rum but there are better ones.
Review by Tom 1968
A 40% spirit based on rum with lots of sugar and aromas. Right after pouring, the alcohol is still quite dominant. Unfortunately absolutely no information, except that it is based on "old" rum, on the bottle and the box. After 5 minutes you have a very dominant fruity scent in the nose, which seems a bit artificial. The palate tastes sweet, orange and licorice quite intense. A "liqueur" with a bit more bite. Conclusion: Nice try but no banana.
Review by Blaž Ulaga
Very good, rich but still easy sipping rum with character 🔝 Nose: very rich and caramel 👍 Maybe some light mint hints in the back ... Body: full-rounded liqueurish body that confirms the nose - way too sweet for my taste 🤷♂️ Finish: long and sweet - again not my favourite cup of tea... All in all, rum for the "rookies" and advanced rum lovers ☝️
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Not quite as bad as the founders reserve but still extremely sweet and artificial. More reminiscent of Fanta syrup with licorice and roasted aromas. The alcohol is reasonably well integrated here, but I still wouldn't call it delicious.

First glue and raisin in the nose. Then sugar peanuts. After a while apricot. After having tried five different ones from the same range, I can say that the nose is actually best of all five. The taste is very different and pretty one-sided: Candied orange peel and also a bit of spice. A light nuttiness again in the finish. Overall a bit too sweet for my taste.
Review by Tobin
Very nice sweet rum. Feels a bit less spicy than other Riise, which lets the sweetness come through even more. The strong peach aromas on the nose decrease somewhat in taste, causing the rum to lose some uniqueness and thus character. Not the best, but a good Riise.

Really nice on the nose and on the palate. Sweet and full of baking spices and a hint of orange. Nice sipper.

A tasting from december 2018. Back then, this was okay for me, but today it would be way too sweet. And it would not be called rum today. It is sweet and a bit spicy in the nose, and very sweet in the taste, with notes of candied apples and some spice.

Sweet sweeter riise. A nice soft rum for beginners.
Review by Reto Schwab
Sweet, caramelized taste - light finish
Review by Al Bunda
A.H. Riise is always fragrant, very alcoholic, seems stronger than the 40% it has, very sweet and fruity, lots of orange, vanilla and raisins. I'd say classic A.H. Riise again.
Review by Guillaume bex
Strong tobacco scent that you also find a bit in the mouth.

Strong, full-bodied sweet sugar pure, somewhat spicy.
Review by MJ72
The starter of the Navys, caramel on the nose, mild and round in taste. Spice and caramel linger in the finish.
Review by Franklin
Nice sweet rum. The right one for beginners. With a somewhat dull finish but not unpleasant.
Review by rum_sk
This was the first Riise I had ever tasted probably 4 years ago, maybe more. So I am a little bit sentimental. Other than that, it is just another same rum in a different bottle.
Review by Scotty1960
On the nose lots of hazelnut and little wood. On the palate surprisingly spicy, sweet fruits with little sherry. Medium-long finish again spicy sweet with nut.
Review by Chrischi78
I really made a mistake on my vacation in Denmark. I just don't like it. Sweet to the point of no return. Then an artificial taste of bitter orange. It will probably gather dust on my shelf.
Review by F Kraemmer
Smagning 19.06.2026 Duft: Overdrevent sødme, svagt appelsin og mirabelle. Smag: Overdrevent sødme. Appelsin svagt mirabelle let ukendelig krydret eftersmag. Umuligt at sammenligne denne blend med nogen form for rom. Glasset: Sødme nærmest syntetisk frugt svagt appelsin. Smagning: In the kitchen cooking.

Amber colored. On the nose spices, woody notes mixed with strong sweetness. The taste then also of wood, almonds, spices and very sweet. For me similar to Royal Danish Navy Frigatte Jylland

I can't make sense of this rum. The smell reminds me of a used hookah head. Extremely artificial with notes of orange. The taste is really harsh. Pure sugar with totally artificial orange notes. For me, this just doesn't work at all. Even for a liqueur, it would be way too sweet and artificial.
Review by Johannes
Very sweet with artificial flavors of orange, caramel, cake batter.
Review by Buddudharma
Absolutely creepy. Very dominant plum notes with an incredibly sticky, artificial sweetness. Truly one of the worst rums I've drunk to date.

My RumRatings review from 6 years ago: On the nose, it’s clear something’s off. Strong, almost biting aromas pour out of the glass. Sugar, molasses, honey, caramel, lots of fruit like orange and other citrus. Anyone who’s sniffed a few rums will notice it smells artificial. On the palate, I immediately thought I was drinking a liqueur. Sickly sweet, the rum spreads sticky in the mouth. Some fruit and lots of vanilla are worth mentioning. This combo reminds me of gummy candy. A bit of spice slightly improves it. The liqueur, I mean rum, is mild. On the finish, you have to endure the aroma chaos with unbearable sweetness before the horror ends. No disrespect, but it’s one of the few bottles I’ve considered tossing. The Royal Navy Rum is borderline trash. A mecca for fans of extra sweet, syrupy rums who don’t care about anything else. Far from what I appreciate and like. Absolutely creepy and simply not rum.
Review by Johannes G
The Riise Navy Rum is great on the nose and that’s unfortunately it. Very, very sweet with fermented fruit aromas on the palate, plus slightly artificial notes that don’t harmonize well with the sweetness. Riise rums and I just don’t get along. The standard Navy Rum performs the worst among them.
Review by Bowel Emptier
Pretty horrendous. Shockingly sweet and syrupy. Makes me feel like I am trapped in purgatory. I was unable to finish my meager glass of it. It felt like I was drinking liquid fruit loops. Absolute slap in the face. Filled me with rage and vitriol. AHHHHHH
Review by Big Greasy Daddy
Dear lord this is an abomination. So sweet it is really bad. Overwhelmingly sweet with a fake orange marmalade flavor. This is more like of a liquor than a rum, and not a good one at that.
Review by LasseL
I don't think the alcohol is well integrated. The aromas seem quite artificial and don't harmonize well. I find it relatively similar to the Non Plus Ultra Very Rare. Maybe okay in terms of taste for the price, but there are far better rums that don't taste so overloaded and flavored.
Review by DonAlexandro
A pretty sweet dessert (rum) with a very distinct toffee note. Definitely a recommendation for those with a sweet tooth and great on vanilla ice cream. Also a good choice for me in a Daiquiri if you skip the simple syrup.
Review by Peder Frits Nielsen
Way too sugary, with a viscosity reminiscent of poorly dissolved soap shavings in a bucket of water. I recognize and respect that others love this drink - it's just NOT for me...
Review by Sebastian Kornett
Just too sweet. No fun. Like drinking syrup.
Review by J.V.
Way too sweet.
Review by Jakob Deiner
So far the most pleasant Riise for me. Smell rather spicy. On the taste then orange as a surprise, unlike other Riise and Don Papa Baroko not overly artificial. Naturally also very sweet and mild, spicy. If memory serves me right, somewhat similar to Remedy Spiced, but even better. - Neat: 3.5/5
