Great Savanna tasting with Artur. A nose of fermented herbs and old plant rope with caramel. The entry on the palate is soft and bitter with lots of vegetal notes and a marked acidity. The finish is rather short and the sweet and acidic side lingers for a long time. This rather pleasant rum still lacks balance with too much acidity.

Having previously had the S.B.S Savanna in my glass, which was a divisive taste, I have to try this one again in peace. I still have a strange aftertaste in my mouth, but this one is a lot better in taste, but not necessarily an ÜberSavanna either.

Opens sweet and lightly fruity on the nose with apricot puree, candied and dried fruits, plus a hint of Mandarine Napoléon. Underneath the playful sugars dwell subtle layers of bitter chocolate, grated ginger and rose petals. Sounds exciting, but unfortunately it’s much too mellow. The palate is very compact in flavours; sweet, dark and bitter. White of coconut, again dried fruits, more Mandarine Napoléon and some malic acid to finish off the fruity notes. Then fiery with spices such as ginger and pepper (but also simply fiery because the alcohol has not been integrated well). It finishes in a tail of dark chocolate, overly steeped black tea and crushed mint; quite short. Upon opening I did not enjoy this bottling as much as I expected to. Flat, and with too much of an alcohol sting. Certainly because I remembered the previous Nectar Savanna 4yo fondly. I decided to let it sit for a few months, with a third of a liter of air in the bottle, and airing out my pour for another hour before reviewing. Unfortunately to no avail.

Nose Teriyaki sauce, a bit of greenery and celery powder. A light green olive brine and obvious vanilla. Toasty side; toasted coconut chips and some toasted bread. A bit of lychee and banana. Slight esteriness here. Light eucalyptus and treacle. Rose jam. Iodine coastal side too; normally I'd easily be bothered by this but here it's well integrated, expressing itself in a balanced way. Biscuit-like, macadamia nuts. Some flambéed orange peel. Obvious fresh ginger. Nutmeg and cinnamon. A slightly plasticky side and maybe milk chocolate (?). Doesn't feel too young but seems to carry traces of its youth. Nice crème caramel, maybe light milk caramel rather than chocolate (?). A bit of stinginess but not too much. Complex enough. 84 Palate Unexpectedly spices appear here; chili flakes, fenugreek, black pepper, maybe some fennel seed. A spiciness not present on the nose. Green and red apple peels. Medium-high or at least upper medium sweetness. A bit stingy here. Dried white grape, macadamia nuts. Some grapefruit and orange peel. With some water, a bit of thyme-like herbaceousness comes out but it flattens even more. You really have to search hard for the aromas here. Unfortunately too closed. 81 Finish Intensity is medium or upper medium. The finish comes and goes very quickly, feels quite shallow and closed. Grassy and aloe vera. A herbal side like Vick's or tiger balm, maybe nutmeg (?). Really needs water. A bit of fruity nuances come out at the very end of the finish but they remain dull and blurry. Maybe ripe orange and apple. 77 Overall impression: My personal, inexperienced and extremely arrogant guess is that this is not a grand arôme but a rhum traditionnel (I say this because I haven’t experienced a more definitively confirmed version of either). Unfortunately, this rum demands too much from the drinker; you dilute it, search for aromas, think you've found them, then search again, etc... I can't be sure how well the independent bottler did their job, unfortunately. Sadly shallow. 75 Total: 79.5 Price-performance: Medium, medium-low Would I buy again?: Unfortunately no
