Foursquare Wagemut Special Edition 2023
One taster called this "kaum als Barbados zu erkennen" — the maple syrup cask takes over. Expect thick maple, a distinct walnut note, brown sugar and a touch of wood and spice, with a warm, slightly hot middle. Several people flag it as too sweet for them, but the nuttiness and dry-ish finish keep it from tipping into candy. A 17-year Foursquare you'd barely pick as Foursquare.

How does Foursquare Wagemut Special Edition 2023 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Maple-cask Foursquare, nutty and quite sweet Loved for its unusual maple-and-walnut character, though most tasters agree it runs sweet and a bit hot. The syrup cask defines it — you'll either enjoy the direction or find it heavy-handed.

Wow, this one really stands out from the last bottlings. Hardly recognizable as Barbados (Foursquare)... spicy and almost notes as found in Guyana are clearly present. Complex also in the mouth sweet, smoky... Chocolate and some fruit .... WOW . I like this direction 👍

The bottling is very special. You don't notice the Foursquare rum at all. Everything is overwhelmed by the maple syrup finish. Unfortunately for me also way too sweet. But you have to give the rum that it offers a very intense nutty note. And of course maple syrup. You just have to like it.

You can notice the impact of the maple syrup cask already in the nose. I like this nutty/walnut note, in the nose and on the palate! The finish is middle long dry and sweet. The alcohol is integrated very well and gives this rum more complexity. All in all it’s a wonderfull rum, but too sweet for me.

Really exciting! I think it's very successful. I particularly like the distinct walnut note, which is quite unique! It's perhaps a little too sweet for me. But with the somewhat bitter and nutty finish, it could do with it. The base should probably be a WIRD. Definitely not Foursquare. If the base had been a bit better, the finish would have been even better...

The smell strongly reminds me of Guyana. On the palate very mild, the 51% is hardly noticeable. Because of the finish, it has something special which in my opinion could be interesting for beginners as well as experienced drinkers. For 75 euros a real price-performance tip.

#4298 14.10.2023 sitting at home raxing after a tough training yesterday and a trip across the border for our monthly shopping today. This one has to rest for a while because it's a bit rough in the beginning. Once rested it has a nive and fruity nose with nice wood and spices. The palate is nicely balanced and also fruity. The finish is medium to long and has a nice light caramel note. Draws nice curtains in the glass. In the empty glass there is a faint coconut and chocolate note.

Interesting experiment: surprising how much wood and rum still shine through, because with something like this you fear the finish will overpower the rum. But it actually succeeded. Delicious syrup and other sweet aromas form the overall picture with wood, spices and subtle fruits.

The finish worked well. A nice nutty, roasted sweetness comes through. Combined with great spiciness. Dry and somewhat alcoholic on the finish. I like it quite a lot. Good value for money at 75 euros for 0.7l of 16-year-old rum.

Funny experiment but not really my thing. Overall unfortunately again quite "sharp" as often with Wagemut bottlings...

Noticeable sweetness from the maple syrup cask. Absolutely rounded rum that I would also recommend to experts. Very good but also suitable for beginners, as it is very soft on the finish. Very nice Wagemut bottling that is fun.

More harmonious on the nose than the other Wagemut, the sherry is simply missing here in a positive way. I like it better because the other always felt a bit forced. Nevertheless, the syrup cask goes in a similar direction, the nutty notes and the fruitiness are there, albeit different. More wood here, a hint of Guyana at first, quickly replaced by a spicy (less fruity) Barbados note. As expected, sweet, a bit too much for me. Syrupy but not sugary. The full-bodied sweetness of the maple remains into the finish, with a fairly strong and warm middle part. Turns spicy towards the end, even a bit like "Maggi", but that works excellently. So far one of my favorites in the range, though I'd prefer it a bit less sweet.

... Strong impression of maple syrup, partly lovage, partly celery

Rather, the Wagemut Special Edition 2023 is an accessible drop despite the increased alcohol content, taking both the connoisseur and the newcomer on a relaxed journey. It's like a stroll through Caribbean history with a little detour through the Canadian wilderness. But unlike the high-ester bottlings, you can also confidently offer this rum to an interested layperson. Just really give it some time in the glass.
