Habitation Velier Renegade 2020
Brace yourself: this smells like plastic, rubber and medicine before any rum shows up. From Grenada's Renegade distillery, bottled by Habitation Velier at 55%, it's a wild, fermented, herbal thing with sugarcane, salt and floral notes underneath. Fans of Haitian clairin and Savanna funk find it fascinating; plenty of others hit "artificial strawberry yoghurt" and dirty rubber and simply tap out.
The community says- Bold funky character
- Well-integrated alcohol
- But: Heavy plastic note

Wild, rubbery, medicinal Grenada oddity Genuinely divisive. Lovers call it a fascinating rubber-and-medicine oddity with clairin energy; detractors find it chemical, unripe and off-putting. Only three years old and it shows.

This is my first ever rum from grenada! And this one is really special… I found some strange notes like medicinal, plastic, rubber, phenol, petrol reminds me on a Savanna HERR/Lontan, but it‘s also a bit on the dirty side (i wouldn‘t say caroni like). Those notes are overwhelmig all the other notes like wood, oak, herbal, floral, sugarcane, a bit fruity (citrus?!). All in all it‘s a special one, for sure, but a good one. The alcohol is integrated well and fits in perfect. I‘m still undecided, if I should order a bottle or not… 🤔😬

The Renegade makes a totally unfinished impression on me with lots of artificial and chemical aromas. I've never tasted it like this before. There's also an unpleasant sour fruit note. That's not my taste profile and we're definitely not going to be friends
Review by Dr.Django
Second tasting: My initial rating of 73 points surprised me when I tasted it again, because I actually found the aromas of candied gum, fruit, sugar water and some herbs quite successful. Afterwards, however, I quickly realized what bothered me: the "artificial strawberry yoghurt" finish.

#4814 16.08.2024 Having a relaxing afternoon and evening with Joël from Switzerland. Nose Fresh, faint wood, citrus, apple, vegetal, light olive, faint rubber, light herbs. Palate Balanced, vegetal, light floral, citrus, oily, light rubber, apple, light olive, faint salt, herbs. Finish Medium long, fresh, balanced, light vegetal, light floral, natural sweetness, fruits, light citrus, herbs. The empty glass has medicinal, honey and mint notes.

I don't have the Renegade comparison rums, but this one reminds me of the 2017 Clairin Ansyen Sajous on the nose, with the root vegetable notes, plus balsamic vinegar, lemongrass and something slightly sweet and candied. Roasty and spicy on the palate, nutty, rather dry on the finish. Interesting rum!
Review by LukaŽiga
7,3:On the nose, a strong pungency breaks into our nosetrils with overripe, rotten notes of tomatoes, red bell peppers, chilli, variety of medicinal tones with rubber, plastic, esters, sweet and creamy sugar cane juice, spicy and salty wood. On long aeration, the cane is herbaceous, mineral and fresh with tea, variety of overripe fruits reveal themselves like tropical, red, dried and citrus, joined with more medicinal ones like petrol, quite peppery now, the rum becomes slightly astringent with yoghurt, perhaps a note of sake could be noticed...Quite a strange combination of notes, but interesting. 8,3:On the palate, the attack is strong with fermented, overripe tropical fruits like banana, yellow fruits and esters, roasted wood notes like caramel, sourdough bread, smoky and spicy, salty, pairing medicinal notes like rubber, plastic and grassy, herbaceous, mineral and again very vegetal sugar cane with tomatoes and red bell peppers. The rum quickly becomes dry.On oxidation, the cane is candied, flowery, fresh with tea, joined with banana pastry. 8,3:The finish is long, balanced, dry, most of the palate notes linger on, with some new additions like mint, grapefruit and butterscotch.

The first sip was an absolute disaster. An extreme plastic note that completely overshadowed everything else. After standing for a long time, the note almost disappeared and an intense and partly artificial raspberry note came through. In addition, something medicinal. Didn't convince me at all, but I'm still curious to see what comes next.

Renegade Rum is already history again. That's how fast things can go in the rum world. It's nice that there are still bottlings like this one. Something floral with some herbs on the nose. There are also a few notes of gum mentioned here. More hidden though. On the palate, I first notice the taste of sugar cane. There is a nice saltiness. Floral fruit remains more of a participant observer here. The impressions continue on the finish, with some citrus fruits added. A good rum that could perhaps have used a little more ageing. I quite like it, the potential that Renegade had is quite recognizable, unfortunately it was probably also (certainly not only) due to the distillate that it was not able to hold its own on the market for long.

I am always intrigued by Renegades releases. This agricole is an interesting mix of 2 sugarcanes, and it is certainly expressed in the nose; floral fullness and some fruity and sweet hints, and in the notes it is spicy, mentol-like and sweet with hints of chocolate
Review by Eric Frechin
A rather disconcerting nose with unusual, rather chemical smells (phenol, rubber). The palate starts with spicy notes, then moves on to floral, sweet caramel. The finish is not unpleasant, with a hint of violet on the floral side and a hint of guava on the fruit side. At the very end, the chemical phenol aspect reappears.
Review by Skyfly
My first Renegade with strong floral and herbal aromas that remind me a bit of Clairin. A medicinal note lingers throughout, but it doesn't bother me much. Otherwise somewhat salty and fermented. Overall an interesting bottling, but one sample is enough for me.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A most surprising rum that must have aroused a great deal of curiosity at Whisky Live 2023. The profile is atypical, powerful and launched on a combo of rubber and plastic, with a background of burning petrol and medicinal touches that veer towards medical equipment or balsam. A light woody note, combined with herbal spices, intrude on the olfactory profile and add a little depth to this very zany profile. On the palate, it's a rum with a strong character that takes over the mouth. Heavy notes of fermentation, rubber and plastic return with medicinal, floral and herbaceous flavors. The sugarcane plays off the woodiness, spices (salt and pepper in particular) and a few fruity notes. It's an intense, original profile, where the integration of alcohol is quite good (the 55% reduction must have been judicious in this case). The finish, of decent length, returns to this phenolic and medicinal, woody, slightly fruity (citrus, dried fruit), grassy and floral panel. A surprising and intriguing profile, which has succeeded in surprising with its age and aromatic richness.

As a comparison to Velier, the original bottlings Pearls Etudes and Old Bacolet can assist as references. Basically, I was really looking forward to the Velier edition, as the Renegades show this wild, fermented, unruly, and brutal aroma profile of the Clairins from Haiti, which I find absolutely exciting and love so much. Unfortunately, this bottling does not come close to the original bottlings. It lacks the distinctive raw character, nose and palate seem restrained in comparison, even tamed, plus a slightly chemical and bitter note. Very disappointing, I had hoped for much more. The asking price for a three-year-old is also more than sporty. Then anytime better one of the above-mentioned bottles, which offer besides half the price of Velier also much better quality and the desired "wow" effect.

I had my first Renegade (unaged) at the Village at a tasting with Jürgen Wiese. And I didn't like it at all. Even though it is well aged, it still reminds me of baby vomit and children's stinky feet. I just don't warm to this profile. Nice to know that there is such a thing, but definitely not my world. Maybe in a daiquiri or TiPunch whatever, but definitely not for me on its own.

Given the number of very mixed reviews of this rum, I was very curious to try it, and the least I can say is that it doesn't leave me completely indifferent. On the nose, I have dried tomatoes in olive oil, brine, and some undetermined spices. On the palate, I find my dried tomato notes again, but the flavor is very light; I don't find much here. The finish is short, ending with notes of old jars whose contents are no longer clear: dried tomatoes, aperitif olives, canned vegetables or mushrooms perhaps. In conclusion, an interesting rum to try, but I don't know if I'd want to have it at home.

Notes taken at Rhum Fest 2024, Quick notes and a bit of a heavy palate, sorry :) What we have here is a UFO! signed Renegade, I'd like to say AS USUAL. Their rum really does have a secret sauce that can be disturbing, but I love it, it really stands out from the crowd. Rum: heavy, plastic, alcohol or petrol, herbaceous Finish: medicinal with a hint of hay and/or Anise? Totally crazy, maybe strange, but I liked it.

Discovery of the distillery through this rum, a beautiful find. A disconcerting nose but one I like a lot. Pleasant on the palate with a nice length. On the nose the image of a tortilla with peppers, tomato, and spices immediately comes to mind. Some esters too. Very curious, I want to go there. Warm on the palate, calmer than on the nose. A bit medicinal, syrupy plants with a bit of bitterness. The alcohol is lively without being unpleasant. Nice length.

The scent reminds me strongly of Velier filling Haiti. A strange mixture of fruit, flowers, salty meat, etc. I can do that. There's a hint of Haiti in the taste, but it's more like Galion. Definitely interesting, but a lot of it is brought down by a rather unpleasant sharpness.
Review by FischeJ
My first Renegade. I really like it. Almost no alcohol to be felt. Sweet, floral, rubber and plastic. The barrel also comes through well for the 3 years of storage. Nevertheless, it remains quite fresh. Not particularly complex, but still nice to drink.

Habitation Velier Renegade 2020 – 55% Grenadian rum, from the cane varieties Lacalome Red and Yellow Lady. Distilled in 2020, aged 3 years in a blend of casks: French oak (17%), ex-bourbon (60%), new American oak (23%). A very divisive rum that clearly struggles to find its audience. And I must admit, on my side too, it’s a miss. Lack of maturity, atypical and confusing aromas, with almost chemical/artificial notes. You find an unpleasant fruity acidity, touches of truffle and olive... 👉 Personally, I’ll pass.

No, I really don't like this. I've given it two chances and the taste of the stick at the end (liquorice) just doesn't do it for me. Weirdly spicy, medicinal. Although I don't normally mind these flavours, this is where it went wrong. I'm going to have to get rid of this bottle because I can't imagine finishing it.

Nose: wow !!! Lot of aromas. Powerful rosehip, mango, bananas, medicine, esters, cherry, humidor & lot of others. Amazing. Taste: complex. Little bit sweetness, but more dry. Some medicinal, iodine, esters, plastic, rubber, dry apricots, mango, pepper, tar, banana, sugarcane, Sulphur. Aftertaste: loooong, complex. Still dry & full. Lot of medicine & iodine notes, some dry apricots, mango, tar, wax, some spices & esters of course. Very pleasant. I love this one ! Absolutely fantastic rum.

Definitely one of the most fun tastings: While my wife turns away in disgust as soon as she smells the rum, referring to vomit or fermented strawberry cheescake, I find more floral, perfumed notes. A similar result on the palate, the wife breaks off, I find it extremely unspectacular with no real depth.
Review by Buddudharma
Strong clairin vibes on the nose and palate, without quite reaching their complexity and class. For a 3-year-old rum, however, it is quite remarkable quality, a pity that there is no sequel here.
Review by Adrien B
Quite a floral nose, a bit like Fidji rubber. Powerful palate but alcohol well integrated, less expressive than the nose, Fidji rounded, the floral side a bit too much like oriental pastry.
Review by Benoit Mahe
Lots of rubber and plastic. Strange but not bad at all
Review by Solidfunk
Olive brine and vanilla on the nose. Pours dark golden. In the mouth, lots more brine, some syrup and like, pine resin. Very agricolish. A little solvent, nail polish. I'm not sure I love these Renegades so far. Sample thanks to xamsx.

Right away the smell put me off, and I let it air out and the taste was already better but the overall impression didn't impress me. I will not buy this bottle
Review by passlemix
A slightly Fijian, smoky banana nose that moves towards solvent and then strawberry. Lots of pineapple yoghurt too. On the palate, too. Top-notch.
Review by Stijn Zino
Not my taste, weird nose. Not enough knowledge of this one. But I get some people like this.

Very unpleasant to drink. Extreme plastic taste with slight olive and yeast.
Review by Jindrich Strobl
Very nice and taste intensive in a good direction. Fresh fruity notes.

Olive, vinegar, funk. Loved it
Review by Joël
Very herbal and young in taste, not really my thing.
Review by Michal Jurka
I don't know what made me buy this bottle when I know I don't like these chemical technical wild things. Plastic, medicinal, rubbery, peppery, sugarcane, sweet-soury, fermented, weirdly floral... I tried it during a hockey World Championship and it tasted like licking a dirty puck.

This is the first time I taste something from Grenada, and it's pretty special/unique. You get smacked in the face with strange notes like dirty rubber, medicine and plastic. I don't get a lot of fruit or barrel influence. Not a big fan of this one to be honest.
Review by Maxime Clr 🇫🇷
It's like biting into a piece of plastic, dipped in caramel and sprinkled with spices and fresh herbs. A spicy sensation that shows the alcohol really isn't well integrated. A bottle that's really not very good
Review by Banana Joe
Phew, this is the worst I’ve had in a glass in a long time. Artificial, fermented baby puke. Would have given more points, but then it says pleasant or drinkable. Sorry, but this doesn’t belong in a glass but in the drain.
Review by F.L.O.
What the fuck ! I'm completely overwhelmed with plastic, something else and medical notes on my nose. But not negative, rather interesting. A little bit of Mr. Light. The first sip was really shit. The second was better and the third after 15 minutes was unexpectedly pleasant/good. A 7 for the time being! Correction after the 4th + 5th sip.... No, nothing clever.
Review by Fuwi
Poaaah, what can you say about that. Imagine someone drinking fermented orange juice with pineapple together with buttermilk and vomiting it into a glass - tadaaa, this is the nose of the distillate. I really waited a long time to see if it would get better - no. So I just took a sip, let it swirl over my tongue and it's sticky sweetness that tastes exactly like it smells. There may be connoisseurs who love such unusual bottlings. But they also like a Fiat Multipla.
Review by Thomas Renoud
Tried in Salon du rhum spa, I had no time to write notes but this one had a really unpleasant smell in line with the first taste. Then it evolved to something more palatable.
Review by MarkF
These tones are beyond me. I don't mind diluents, disinfectants, or gum. I like rubber in Fiji a lot, but this profile is just wrong. The nose is a complete disaster at 4/10 (maybe I smell olives?), the taste is a bit better, probably iodine, I won't rate the finish because I didn't feel like doing it. This not really.
