Habitation Velier Renegade 2020
Brace yourself: this smells like plastic, rubber and medicine before any rum shows up. From Grenada's Renegade distillery, bottled by Habitation Velier at 55%, it's a wild, fermented, herbal thing with sugarcane, salt and floral notes underneath. Fans of Haitian clairin and Savanna funk find it fascinating; plenty of others hit "artificial strawberry yoghurt" and dirty rubber and simply tap out.
The community says- Bold funky character
- Well-integrated alcohol
- But: Heavy plastic note

Aggregated from 88 community reviews.
Wild, rubbery, medicinal Grenada oddity Genuinely divisive. Lovers call it a fascinating rubber-and-medicine oddity with clairin energy; detractors find it chemical, unripe and off-putting. Only three years old and it shows.

Given the number of very mixed reviews of this rum, I was very curious to try it, and the least I can say is that it doesn't leave me completely indifferent. On the nose, I have dried tomatoes in olive oil, brine, and some undetermined spices. On the palate, I find my dried tomato notes again, but the flavor is very light; I don't find much here. The finish is short, ending with notes of old jars whose contents are no longer clear: dried tomatoes, aperitif olives, canned vegetables or mushrooms perhaps. In conclusion, an interesting rum to try, but I don't know if I'd want to have it at home.

This is my first ever rum from grenada! And this one is really special… I found some strange notes like medicinal, plastic, rubber, phenol, petrol reminds me on a Savanna HERR/Lontan, but it‘s also a bit on the dirty side (i wouldn‘t say caroni like). Those notes are overwhelmig all the other notes like wood, oak, herbal, floral, sugarcane, a bit fruity (citrus?!). All in all it‘s a special one, for sure, but a good one. The alcohol is integrated well and fits in perfect. I‘m still undecided, if I should order a bottle or not… 🤔😬

Poaaah, was soll man dazu sagen.

A most surprising rum that must have aroused a great deal of curiosity at Whisky Live 2023. The profile is atypical, powerful and launched on a combo of rubber and plastic, with a background of burning petrol and medicinal touches that veer towards medical equipment or balsam. A light woody note, combined with herbal spices, intrude on the olfactory profile and add a little depth to this very zany profile. On the palate, it's a rum with a strong character that takes over the mouth. Heavy notes of fermentation, rubber and plastic return with medicinal, floral and herbaceous flavors. The sugarcane plays off the woodiness, spices (salt and pepper in particular) and a few fruity notes. It's an intense, original profile, where the integration of alcohol is quite good (the 55% reduction must have been judicious in this case). The finish, of decent length, returns to this phenolic and medicinal, woody, slightly fruity (citrus, dried fruit), grassy and floral panel. A surprising and intriguing profile, which has succeeded in surprising with its age and aromatic richness.

Belle longueur.

#4814 16.08.2024 Having a relaxing afternoon and evening with Joël from Switzerland. Nose Fresh, faint wood, citrus, apple, vegetal, light olive, faint rubber, light herbs. Palate Balanced, vegetal, light floral, citrus, oily, light rubber, apple, light olive, faint salt, herbs. Finish Medium long, fresh, balanced, light vegetal, light floral, natural sweetness, fruits, light citrus, herbs. The empty glass has medicinal, honey and mint notes.

Nose: wow !!! Lot of aromas. Powerful rosehip, mango, bananas, medicine, esters, cherry, humidor & lot of others. Amazing. Taste: complex. Little bit sweetness, but more dry. Some medicinal, iodine, esters, plastic, rubber, dry apricots, mango, pepper, tar, banana, sugarcane, Sulphur. Aftertaste: loooong, complex. Still dry & full. Lot of medicine & iodine notes, some dry apricots, mango, tar, wax, some spices & esters of course. Very pleasant. I love this one ! Absolutely fantastic rum.

The first sip was an absolute disaster. An extreme plastic note that completely overshadowed everything else. After standing for a long time, the note almost disappeared and an intense and partly artificial raspberry note came through. In addition, something medicinal. Didn't convince me at all, but I'm still curious to see what comes next.

Notes taken at Rhum Fest 2024, Quick notes and a bit of a heavy palate, sorry :) What we have here is a UFO! signed Renegade, I'd like to say AS USUAL. Their rum really does have a secret sauce that can be disturbing, but I love it, it really stands out from the crowd. Rum: heavy, plastic, alcohol or petrol, herbaceous Finish: medicinal with a hint of hay and/or Anise? Totally crazy, maybe strange, but I liked it.

Second tasting: My initial rating of 73 points surprised me when I tasted it again, because I actually found the aromas of candied gum, fruit, sugar water and some herbs quite successful. Afterwards, however, I quickly realized what bothered me: the "artificial strawberry yoghurt" finish.

I had my first Renegade (unaged) at the Village at a tasting with Jürgen Wiese. And I didn't like it at all. Even though it is well aged, it still reminds me of baby vomit and children's stinky feet. I just don't warm to this profile. Nice to know that there is such a thing, but definitely not my world. Maybe in a daiquiri or TiPunch whatever, but definitely not for me on its own.

I don't have the Renegade comparison rums, but this one reminds me of the 2017 Clairin Ansyen Sajous on the nose, with the root vegetable notes, plus balsamic vinegar, lemongrass and something slightly sweet and candied. Roasty and spicy on the palate, nutty, rather dry on the finish. Interesting rum!

My first Renegade. I really like it. Almost no alcohol to be felt. Sweet, floral, rubber and plastic. The barrel also comes through well for the 3 years of storage. Nevertheless, it remains quite fresh. Not particularly complex, but still nice to drink.

No, I really don't like this. I've given it two chances and the taste of the stick at the end (liquorice) just doesn't do it for me. Weirdly spicy, medicinal. Although I don't normally mind these flavours, this is where it went wrong. I'm going to have to get rid of this bottle because I can't imagine finishing it.

The scent reminds me strongly of Velier filling Haiti. A strange mixture of fruit, flowers, salty meat, etc. I can do that. There's a hint of Haiti in the taste, but it's more like Galion. Definitely interesting, but a lot of it is brought down by a rather unpleasant sharpness.

I am always intrigued by Renegades releases. This agricole is an interesting mix of 2 sugarcanes, and it is certainly expressed in the nose; floral fullness and some fruity and sweet hints, and in the notes it is spicy, mentol-like and sweet with hints of chocolate
Review by Buddudharma
