The surprise here is a cucumber note — one taster is in love with that "freshly picked cucumber" smell straight from the garden. This is a barely one-year-old Guadeloupe pot-still agricole caught between raw cane spirit and early oak: sugarcane, yellow flowers, apricot and plum, grassy-yeasty funk, a little toasted wood. Bright and full of personality, but young and not fully knit together.

Notes taken at Rhum Fest 2024, Quick notes and a bit heavy palate, sorry :) Here we have: a true "classic" ESB with cane, a little fruit, especially orange and apricot? It's not easy as we move into the living room, and I'm less sharp, but I really enjoyed it. Very surprised by the current rating of this keel! Maybe the finish is a bit short.

No, sorry, I somehow can't warm to Papa rouyo. Sour, overripe and fermented fruit aromas as well as slightly rotten herbs, salty and earthy notes come together here. The alcohol is also too present. Somehow very unbalanced and special. Unfortunately not to my taste at all. Especially not at this price...

A young rum from the Papa Rouyo distillery (the island's most recent to date), Velier has followed up its previous edition to find a mix between the aromas of unaged rum and the influence of aging on them. The result is a blend of slightly sweet vesuvial aromas, herbal and vegetal notes that rub shoulders with spices and young oak, supported by exotic fruits and a hint of caramel. A profile at the crossroads, without being revolutionary. The attack on the palate is even stranger: cane serves as an introduction before a battle between floral and vegetal flavors, exotic fruit, spicy wood and medicinal, fermented scents. Although the profile is varied, the whole is a bit all over the place and lacks homogeneity. The alcohol could be better integrated. The finish, of decent length, gives a little freshness at first, before letting the spices take over. A touch of caramelized roundness completes the picture. The desire to showcase a rum at its various stages of evolution is understandable, but this version will be neither the most memorable, nor the least expensive, alas.

Young agricole rum. On the nose, it has fruit brandy, reminiscent of Williams pear or plum brandy. It's accompanied by vegetal and spicy notes, but quite sweet. On the palate, the yellow fruit is confirmed by pear, sweet spices, and a very light oaky note. The finish is extremely short, leaving us with sweet vegetal notes. In conclusion, a pleasant rum to try, without much pretension. I don't think it's worth the price, but it's not disastrous either.

Nose: bright. Dry apricots, sandal, yellow flowers, fish fat, nuts, spices, sugarcane. Really interesting. Taste: Hursh & bright. Sweet tropical fruits, sandal wood, honey, oily, toasted oak, sugarcane, some caramel, little bit peppery. Aftertaste: medium-long, dry, lot of dry fruits like mango & apricots, woody, spicy, little bit of almonds & drip of coffee. Total: interesting rum. Very important add water, and do it more, than usually ))

Disappointing nose, choose your glass well, spices, roundness, alcohol. Quite sharp on the palate, pep, roundness and spices, a bit of wood and a background of licorice and caramel. A rather average finish, on sugar, freshness and a bitterness appears at the end. A bit expensive for this Guadeloupean rum, I think a bit more aging wouldn’t hurt, it lacks a bit of body and structure.

It takes sometime to understand how good it is and what it truly reminds. An young agricole that feels caught between fresh cane spirit and early wood influence. The nose opens with sugarcane, grassy notes, earth, fish fat and the one I personally in love with... a smell of freshly picked cucumber 🥒 from the garden. There’s also a slightly yeasty and vegetal side that gives it a raw. On the palate it is bright and expressive, with notes of honey, vegetable fresh, herbs, pepper and lightly toasted oak. The profile moves between floral freshness and earthy agricole tones. The alcohol can feel a little sharp at first. The finish is medium-length, dry with lingering cane, wood and vegie notes. Not the most polished or integrated agricole, but definitely an intriguing and enjoyable rum with personality. It’s not perfectly cohesive and the alcohol occasionally pushes through, but that slightly wild personality is also part of its charm. Interesting rather than elegant 🥒🍆🥃
