La Maison Du Whisky Foursquare Rum Barbados (Flag Series) 2006

"Typical Foursquare profile" is how several tasters sum it up — coconut, milk chocolate, vanilla and caramel on the nose, rounder and lighter-fruited than most. At 60.3% the palate turns spicy and woody, and a few found it sharp, dry, even a touch artificial on the finish. Most enjoyed it; the recurring gripe is it's hard to tell apart from a standard Foursquare.

A Foursquare distilled entirely in pot stills, which is more aromatic than it appears. The nose is full of tropical fruit and citrus, sweet spices and caramelized aromas. A round, easy-drinking profile. The attack on the palate is very similar to the nose: coconut, dried fruit, citrus, vanilla, nutmeg, molten woody chocolate, hazelnut, caramel and toffee give an opulent, generous rum. Despite all its obvious qualities, it remains difficult to distinguish from a more conventional Foursquare. The alcohol is well integrated. The finish is of decent length, with fruity, chocolate, pastry, woody and spicy fragrances. Relatively smooth and warm, even silky. The bottled Foursquare is of good quality, but its premium positioning is too high by today's bottling standards.

Velier FS (+ a fee spected other contenders) blind cross tasting: Honestly, the results here were very close. The Belier bottlings display a very high quality thourgout the range. Triptych and Pleni came out on top for me closely followed by Destino. I was somewhat surprised, that Sassafras and 2006 came out rather at the bottom, while I enjoyed both very much on their own. Raconteur also quite low in the ranking with Principia clearly at the bottom.

Schade!

Of the 16 years of maturation, the master has spent 14 in tropical ex-bourbon casks...so very promising! The nose is full of coconut, butterscotch, cream pudding, oak barrel, slightly tart notes in the background (somewhere between hops and grapefruit). Allspice on the palate, toasted barrel, tannins, the high ABV comes across as a little sharp

Actually quite tasty Foursquare and for me on a good to high ECS level. Classic Foursquare nose with the usual aromas (in quite high intensity) as well as good melting and integration. On the other hand, not cheap either.

The nose is surprisingly good with tropical notes. Unfortunately, the palate can't quite keep up. Already a certain depth, but a little too alcoholic, a little soapy.
