A rum tasted at WLP. And tasted again 20 months later. A powerful nose that remains balanced, pastry-like and makes you want to go on. The palate starts out very well, but retracts rather quickly, the aromas narrow, become acqueous and the finish is logically disappointing, short and not very sapid.

1990 C<>H sounds promising ... and to a large extent it can fulfill the expectations ... but it does not reach the absolute top class. It lacks a bit of power and has a bit too much acidity for my taste. If you also consider the price...well

Today 3x 1990 C<>H with the TRC Platzhirsch against the TWJ and the CoR. On the nose, the TWJ is quite smoky, the TRC is incredibly balanced (also with a cake note), the CoR a little fresher, more citrus and clotted cream. On the palate, the TWJ is even smokier than on the nose (it must have spent some time in a peated whisky cask). The TRC and CoR are much more balanced and quite close together.

A Hampden that raises expectations and at the same time appeals to me through the beauty of its bottle: could it be the beautiful decanter syndrome? Sadly, yes. The Hampden nose is particularly pastry-like and greedy. You get the impression of tropical fruit and citrus compote or a kind of marmalade, which is rather pleasant to the nostrils. The funky side comes gradually and alternates esters, solvents, glue and varnish. A nice Hampden in prospect. The attack on the palate, however, is more reserved. The pastry and mellowness dominate, overtaking the fruit and medicinal flavors, which are less lively than usual. Roundness prevails over intensity, making for a rather linear, unspectacular rum. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is not only weak, but also of questionable length: the flavors in the mouth struggle to linger, apart from those pastry notes that have completely tamed the rum. Without being bad, this Hampden is far from spectacular. Unfortunately, the result does not live up to expectations: there is nothing to justify a cuvée at this price when other bottlers offer the same Vintage for two or three times less...

Whisky Live Paris 2024 (trade fair evaluation, only overall rating and personal recommendation to buy): Glad I got to try this one there. On the nose mega-good, with popcorn, marzipan. Pineapple. Very fruity on the palate, sour, tasty overall but less complex than the nose would suggest. Unfortunately, the finish is a little too short. Too expensive for what the rum offers in terms of taste. I don't have to have a bottle of it.

The nose I wonderful typical Hampden with ester, pineapple papaya some marzipan pastry but also a good portion of woody notes ... alcohol barely noticeable. The palate is oily and ripe... unfortunately it can't keep up with others of this class no flooding of flavors in the mouth, rather a bit flat and almost dull (at a high level). What I really like is that it doesn't leave that often very bitter and dry finish. I exclude the price because otherwise I would have to deduct 10 points because that would actually be cheeky.

Excellent '90 Hampden, tasted at WLP '24. On the nose ester, pineapple and tropical fruits. The palate is very mellow and same as the nose. However, the finish is short, not living up the expectations.

Ok. This bottling is pretty tasty, no question, but for the outrageous price asked, in my opinion, it's definitely not worth it. Everyone complains about the new Hampden Fifteen, but it clearly has the better price-performance ratio.

... Hampden, the legendary Jamaican distillery that besides rum also produces alcohol for perfumes. In all rums from this distillery, you can smell wild esters, after which your whole body soaks up the scent of yellow tropical fruits - mango, papaya, pineapple, peach. One of the rums you "must try before you die".

Tasted at Whisky Live Paris, the nose is magnificent and makes you want to drink it straight away. On the nose, you can smell esters and a blend of tropical fruits such as pineapple, mango and banana. The nose evolves as you leave the rum in the glass for more than 20 minutes, becoming even fruitier. The well-balanced palate offers a blend of tropical fruits and some citrus notes. The finish is very long and leaves a pleasant taste of tropical fruits such as pineapple and mango. The biggest drawback for me is the price, which is far too high compared with other 1990's that are just as good.
