Best sipped neat with time in the glass — a splash of air really wakes it up. This is a lower-ester OWH Hampden: banana, pineapple and tropical fruit up front, a little marzipan sweetness, then wood and tannins on a long, warm finish. Several tasters found it hits the Hampden markers but stays a bit "sage" — tidy rather than deep.

Whisky Fair Rhein-Ruhr Düsseldorf April 2026. And continuing with a Hampden from Colours of Rum. A typical funky Hampden, tropical fruits (banana and pineapple), as well as of course esters and a bit of caramel, are noticeable on the palate.

Nose Fresh, light wood, faint smoke, fruity, ester, overripe, banana, faint honey, light nutts. Palate Warm, light wood, light roasted, fruity, overripe, banana, light nutts, ester, light marzipan, faint floral. Finish Long and warm, fresh, light wood, fruity, banana, light nutts, faint floral. A fairly straightforward Hampden low ester, with tropical fruit, vanilla, a little wood and a pinch of medicinal touches on the esters on the nose. Pastry aromas add roundness to the nostrils. A relatively simple nose, but one that lacks the depth to make a real impression. The attack on the palate is initially lively, tense and biting on the esters, before softening on exotic fruits and the sweetness of marzipan. Citrus fruits add a touch of acidity. Regrettably, apart from the palate entry, the rum remains flat on the palate, without the slightest surprise. The alcohol could be better integrated. The finish is of decent length, with more floral and medicinal aromas. The funkiness comes out more, with the barrel adding tannins. A rum that clearly needs aeration to express itself, but whose finish alone cannot create ecstasy.

As much as I like Hampden, I do not see the purpose of this specific bottle. I think the OB Hampden OWH is a better option for less money. The Kirsch OWH seems fruitier after adding water. That does not mean this is a bad rum. It hits a lot of the typical Hampden markers and is in that sense yummy. It just lacks that certain moreishness that I would expect from a Hampden.

Smoky light hampden... Hampden, the legendary Jamaican distillery that besides rum also produces alcohol for perfumes. In all rums from this distillery, you can feel wild esters, after which your whole body soaks in the scent of yellow tropical fruit – mango, papaya, pineapple, peach. One of the rums you "must try before you die".

Hampden OWH 2012 – 60.4% Aged 11 years in bourbon barrels (including 3 in Jamaica), this Hampden clearly lacks character. Nose and palate are too tame: it won't leave a big impression in this marathon day, where others performed much better.
